The rape victim, resident of Sitamari district in Bihar presently living on rent at Kalra village with her husband and five children, told The Tribune that there landlord Babbu had also been pressuring them to leave the village at the behest of the accused since the registration of the FIR and he was not even allowing them to enter their rented room.

The woman alleged that Joga Singh and his accomplice forcibly entered her room on June 5 and offered her money for making physical relations with them. She refused and shouted for help but they raped her in front of her five children.

She informed her husband, who works in a private school in Aadampur. The matter was reported to the police, following which an FIR under sections 376 (rape) and 452 (forcibly entering someone’s premises with prior intention to attack) was registered on June 6.

Even after a week of the registration of the FIR, the police did not arrest any of accused as they were close to an SAD MLA, she alleged.

When contacted, Aadampur SHO Jasbir Singh said he had not conducted any raid to arrest the accused as an inquiry into the case was being conducted by his senior police officer.

Meanwhile, DSP (rural I) Kulwant Singh told The Tribune that the DIG had asked him to inquire into the case on Tuesday and he would complete the inquiry within 10 days. To a query, he said no political person had contacted him about the case.

Denying the allegations of making attempts to save the accused, Aadampur MLA Sarabjeet Singh Makkar said he had never helped any criminal, especially involved in rape and drug cases.

Sarwan Singh of nearby Narur village, who is helping the victim to get justice, told The Tribune that both the accused were baptised (amritdhari) Sikhs. Fissures appear in SAD-BJP alliance?
Our Correspondent

Phagwara, June 13
Differences are popping up between the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party despite tall claims of strong bonding between the two alliance partners in the Punjab Government.

This claim is substantiated by the allegations by some BJP leaders who say that they are continuously being ignored and sidelined by the SAD leadership.

Several BJP leaders, including Balbhadhar Sein Duggal, Chander Mohan Chawla and councillor Bira Mal Baljot, expressed their deep resentment before Lok Sabha deputy speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal when he came calling to Phagwara today.

Although Atwal tried to pacify them, things took an ugly turn when the SAD leader went to visit under-construction of the Satnampura rail overbridge and Mehtan bypass flyover. Expressing their unhappiness, these leaders said Atwal should have asked them to accompany him during these visits. The SAD leader later returned to nagar council office.

Akali leader Jarnail Singh Wahid tried to clarify the matter, but angry BJP leaders did not hear any word. And making things worst, BJP councillor Bira Ram Baljot, in the presence of the media, insisted that Atwal visit his ward of Dharamkot mohalla to assess the worsening condition of the ward and to check the lack of basic amenities in the area.

Meanwhile, the deputy speaker, while talking to newsmen at council office, expressed his concern over the delay in the completion of the Satnampura rail overbridge and Mehtan bypass flyover. He said shortage of labour and power were the main causes of the delay.

Atwal said officials of the construction company had now assured him that Satnampura rail overbridge would be completed by the end of this year and the flyover by August 31. Atwal said he had summoned an emergency high-level meeting of all concerned on June 28 at New Delhi to assess the latest situation and progress of these projects.

He, however, hesitated to comment on his own assurances to providing a stoppage of Malwa Express and Jammu Tawi-Hardwar Mail at Phagwara, saying he would try his level best. Earlier Atwal held a high-level meeting with the NHAI project director, Punjab Infrastructure Development Board MD A.S. Chhatwal, PIDB executive engineer and Phagwara SDM Amarjitpal and discussed the matter in details before leaving for the sites.

Commenting on the ongoing confrontation among parliamentarians and the Supreme Court, Atwal said there should be harmony among the judiciary, the legislative and the executive.
