Women beat empty tins to demand cheap atta, dal
Jalandhar, June 7 The workers also held a rally and dharna to protest against the non-fulfilment of the much-publicised poll promise by the SAD-BJP combine that atta and dal would be provided to the people at Rs 4 and Rs 20 a kg, respectively. As the rally reached the SDM’s office, a group of women started beating tin canisters. They also displayed placards with slogans like “chaar ruppiya kilo dal scheme turant chaalu karo” and “vidya da mufat parbandh karo”. Agitated workers alleged that the SAD-BJP combine had run away from its promise within three months of the formation of its government in Punjab. “On the one hand, the price hike has tormented poor people in an unprecedented manner and, on the other, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is stating that he has no objection to mega projects inititated by the previous Congress government. This is an indication for the common man that his or her lot is not going to witness any change with the change of government,” said party leader Kulwant Singh Sandhu. Party state committee member Baldev Singh Nurpuri demanded that essential goods should be supplied to poor people through the PDS and that the farm loans of poor farmers waived. CPI leaders, including Sampuran Singh Khambra, Harimuni Singh said the Punjab Government should do something to provide employment to unemployed youths. |
