Vulture breeding centre proposal dropped
Shimla, November 24 With the Centre providing meagre funds for the project, the department has given up the proposal. Instead, it will work for the conservation of vultures in collaboration with the Bombay Natural History Society, which is engaged in a similar activity in several states. Mr Vinay Tandon, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (wildlife), said lack of a breeding centre would not affect the conservation programme as a breeding project was already functional in neighbouring Haryana. The department was in touch with the Haryana authorities and hoped to enter an arrangement under which vultures bred at the centre would also be released in Himachal areas. The in-situ conservation programme will involve local people in a big way. The farmers, in particular, will be educated and persuaded to give up the use of diclofenac that was proving lethal for the big birds. Though officially banned, the drug was freely available in market and being cheap, farmers were using it. The thrust will be on popularising the use of alternative drugs. Villagers will be involved in keeping a watch on the nests of vultures and monitoring the growth of fledgling birds. The migration routes of the birds that move up to far-off states like Gujarat and Rajasthan will be tracked using a satellite-based system. |
