Lets work to regain power: Chautala
Tribune News Service

Sampla (Rohtak), November 24
INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala today asked party workers to resolve to launch a struggle for bringing the party back to power in Haryana.

Addressing a rally organised to mark the birth anniversary of Sir Chhotu Ram, he said raising slogans in his support would not sweep the INLD back to power. It could be achieved only through a sustained struggle and all party workers should pledge to struggle for the party.

Replying to criticism regarding his repeated rallies in the Rohtak area, he said if Congress leadership could celebrate the birth anniversaries of Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi, the INLD leadership had every right to remember leaders of the stature of Sir Chhotu Ram.

He said although his father Devi Lal had ideological differences with Sir Chhotu Ram, both of them had great mutual respect and regard for each other.

Following the INLD’s defeat, he had promised to provide issue-based support to the new government. “Now people ask me how the Hooda government is performing. My reply is there is hardly a government in Haryana,” he said. The Congress government had done nothing that could merit his support, he added.

Former Finance Minister Sampat Singh, INLD chief Ashok Arora, former Governor Sultan Singh and Rajya Sabha member Ajay Singh Chautala also addressed the rally.

Policy changes farmers’ fortune
Our Correspondent

Fatehabad, November 24
The policy of allowing private traders to purchase wheat directly from farmers as introduced by the government and a steep hike in the prices of certain pulses, cereals and other crops since last year has improved the financial condition of farmers in the area. The farmers, who had been in debt trap due to bad cotton crop over the past few years, find themselves in a better position this year. The fact holds good for the entire state, sources say.

Deviating from its long-standing policy, the government had allowed purchase of wheat by private traders from the current year. The government had also given certain relaxations in the quantity of wheat a private trader could store. The move had come as a welcome change for the farmers.

Though the government had kept the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat at Rs 650 per quintal and allowed a further sum of Rs 50 per quintal as bonus, the crop fetched much more price to the farmers as the private traders vied with each other to purchase wheat. Some farmers delayed the sale of their wheat crop and the same crop was now selling for Rs 1,050 per quintal.

The government now announced Rs 750 per quintal as wheat MSP for the next year, but the farmers hope they would get much better price for their produce from private traders.

It is not that only wheat had changed the fortune of farmers for the better. The prices of some other crops have also witnessed a good hike during the past one year. Grams that sold for Rs 1,500 per quintal last year are now fetching Rs 3,200 per quintal. Maize witnessed a hike from Rs 800 per quintal last year to Rs 1,700 per quintal this year. Bajra jumped from Rs 400 per quintal to Rs 800 per quintal, Muchhal paddy, also called duplicate basmati, is being sold for Rs 1,350 per quintal against Rs 1,000 per quintal last year.

Mr Manohar Gera, a progressive farmer from nearby Bhirdana village, said the hike in the prices of common crops had brought prosperity to farmers. They were now getting an income of around Rs 7,500 per acre which was more than what they got earlier.

Earlier, they used to get around Rs 12,000 per acre per year, but now they were getting Rs 18,000 per acre or more as lease amount for their land.

According to the Agriculture Minister, Mr Harmohinder Singh Chatha, the highest ever yield of 20.75 lakh bales was achieved in 2004-2005.

Mr Chatha attributes the bumper production to increase in area under hybrid varieties and Bt cotton, favourable weather conditions coupled with low incidence of pests and diseases.

About 5,500 bales of American cotton and 500 bales of “desi” cotton are arriving daily in the markets. Over 4 lakh bales of American and 24,500 bales of “desi” cotton have been procured by November 17.

CPM to press UPA govt to cut petro prices

Instead of raising issues of public interest like the agricultural crisis, rising prices and SEZs, it is needlessly focusing on the issue of clemency to Afzal Guru, which is a prerogative of the President and outside the ambit of Parliament.

This was stated by Mr Neelotpal Basu, former Rajya Sabha MP and member of the Central Secretariat of the CPM, at a news conference organised here today. "What is the point in raising an issue in Parliament which is not in its domain?" he said.

He said their party would press the UPA government to slash the prices of petrol and diesel in view of the decline in crude oil rate. "The CPM would also raise the demand to review the Union Government's policy on the development of special economic zones (SEZs) in various parts of the country," he maintained.

Later, a meeting of the CPM workers was also organised. The meeting was also addressed by CPM state secretary Inderjit and other party leaders.
