Gurgaon-Manesar gets tram service
New Delhi, November 22 In India, at present only Kolkata has a tram service. Other cities to have had trams in the past include Mumbai, Kanpur, Nasik and Chennai. Though the proposal is still in the conceptual stage, the state government has already done quite a bit of homework for devising yet another way of transportation for its expanding-by-the-day NCR region. State Transport Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala told The Tribune today that the tram system would be for the Gurgaon -Manesar stretch. “ We have already studied other modern tram services in the world…also visited some of them. Though the proposal is still in the conceptual stage, we are seriously contemplating and working on it,” he said. Incidentally, Gurgaon-Manesar is the same stretch of the NH-8 on which the “maxicab drivers” recently murdered 28 persons after robbing them of their belongings on the pretext of giving them a lift. Due to lack of a good public transport in the area, the gang had no problem in trapping unsuspecting people. Mr Surjewala said there were several other measures in the pipeline to improve the internal as well as inter-state transport system in the NCR regions of Gurgaon, Faridabad and Bahadurgarh. The state government plans to introduce 150 radio cabs in Gurgaon within this financial year. Besides, Haryana also plans to take the Delhi metro in Gurgaon, which at present is till the IFFCO Chowk, further on to Rajiv Chowk and Manesar. Meanwhile, after Gurgaon the Delhi metro is all set to race into Faridabad before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. After signing the MoU with Maruti Udyog Limited for setting up road safety institutes at Rohtak and Bahadurgarh, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda told The Tribune that the metro would roll into Faridabad before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He said the state government was pushing for the metro link to Faridabad to be included with the recently okayed Phase II line between Central Secretariat and Badarpur on the Haryana border. The Delhi Government gave an “in principle” approval to the Central Secretariat-Badarpur link recently. The DMRC has already submitted an interim detailed project report (DPR) of the proposed Faridabad link. The final DPR is likely to be submitted soon. |
Cabinet defines ‘dhaba’
Chandigarh, November 22 Since no dictionary defined which eating place can be treated as a “dhaba” and which cannot be, a committee of officers, including engineers, was set up by the government to define a “dhaba” so that those eating places for which this concession was not meant, may not seek a legal course in the absence of a definition. Now in Haryana only that eating place will be considered a “dhaba”, on the construction of which not more than Rs 5 lakh is incurred, which has no other business activity, has a seating capacity for fewer than 25 persons inside a covered area and is not air-conditioned. In addition, such an eating place will have to offer its fare at rates lower than those charged in the lowest category of restaurant run by the Haryana Tourism Corporation. This definition of a “dhaba” was approved by the state Cabinet today when it met under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Dhabas meeting this definition will be entitled to exemption from VAT with effect from July 1, 2005. The Cabinet also decided to insert Rule 52A in the Haryana Value Added Tax Rules, 2003, to reduce the tax on processed meat, poultry and fish from 12.5 per cent to 4 per cent. The Cabinet approved the Haryana Development and Regulation of Urban Areas (Amendment) Ordinance, 2006, for the creation of a fund for the development of major infrastructure in the state. The infrastructure development charges deposited by colonisers, loans and grants from the Central or state government or the local authority, or loans and grants from national or international financial institutions and any other money from such sources as the state government may decide, will be credited to the fund, which will be utilised for the development of major infrastructure projects in the state. The Cabinet authorised the Board of School Education to itself print text-books for Classes VI to XII instead of getting these printed from the Department of Printing and Stationery. This will ensure the timely availability of the books, essential for the success of the semester system, introduced in these classes during the current academic session. Among other decisions taken by the Cabinet were the extension of compassionate assistance to Group A and B employees of the state government also in addition to Group C and D employees and an enhancement in the limit of sale of court fee or non-judicial stamps by stamp vendors from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 and their commission from 0.5 per cent to 1 per cent. Henceforth, the licences to the stamp vendors will be issued for three years and they will also be given identity cards. |
