Youth Cong trains guns on Bhajan, son

Hisar, November 13
In a queer political development, the Haryana Pradesh Youth Congress has decided to launch a statewide campaign to oust a former Chief Minister, Mr Bhajan Lal and his MP son, Mr Kuldeep Bishnoi, from the party.

At a meeting organised here today, Arvind Kiloi, General Secretary of the Haryana Pradesh Youth Congress, announced that the youth wing of the state Congress would soon start a signature-cum-awareness campaign against the father-son duo.

"We will expose the nefarious designs of Mr Bishnoi, who is trying to sabotage the development process in the state," Mr Kiloi asserted while talking to The Tribune after the meeting.

Terming Mr Bhajan Lal as the "fountainhead of corruption" in the state, the Youth Congress leader remarked that Mr Bishnoi should have a glance at his father's track record before levelling wild allegations against the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Mr Kiloi even demanded a CBI inquiry into the assets of Mr Bhajan Lal, stating that the former Chief Minister had made property worth crores.

Regarding the plan of the statewide drive, the Youth Congress leader disclosed that the campaign would be launched on December 1 from Bristol Hotel in Gurgaon, which, he stated, belonged to Mr Bhajan Lal.

He said following this, Youth Congress activists would tour the entire state, exposing the real motive of Mr Bishnoi and his father before the people.

A signature campaign would also be carried out simultaneously, he said, adding that a memorandum seeking their expulsion from the party and bearing signatures of the residents of the state would then be submitted to the AICC President, Ms Sonia Gandhi.

"During the drive, we will also make people aware of the benefits of the special economic zones (SEZs) and ask farmers not to be misled by the misinformation campaign launched by Mr Bishnoi for vested interests," he maintained.

However, Mr Bishnoi could not be contacted for his comments regarding the matter despite repeated attempts.

Politicians vie for attention in Deswali Jat belt

Rohtak, November 13
The Deswali Jat belt of Haryana is witnessing heightened political activity with every party and politician vying to grab its attention. The area is known to collectively change the fortunes of politicians by setting new trends in state politics.

As the winter approaches, political activities in the area are bound to generate a lot of heat, with the Congress planning rallies in all Assembly segments in the Rohtak parliamentary constituency and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s bete noire, former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, aiming to give himself and his two sons a political boost by holding a rally here in January.

In between, Indian National Lok Dal supremo Om Parkash Chautala will address a rally at Sampla in this district later this month to mark the birth anniversary of the late Sir Chhotu Ram.

Significantly, the Chief Minister addressed a largely attended rally at Sampla on November 3. A few weeks earlier, the INLD organised a rally at Meham, near here, which marked Mr Om Parkash Chautala’s return to mainstream politics after a long sojourn in the USA.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has its state office here and it has been organising political events here frequently, though it is yet to recover from the inertia that followed its poor performance in the last Assembly poll.

Political parties are not the only organisations vying for the attention of the area. Government employees have also chosen to stage their protests here instead of Chandigarh. The Haryana Sanyukta Karamchari Manch organised a protest rally here on Saturday last. The sacked recruits of the Haryana Industrial Security Force have been organising protests here for more than a year.

However, political parties and employees’ organisations have different reasons for choosing Rohtak. Employees’ leaders say they hold their protests here because this is the Chief Minister’s hometown and they get the desired attention.

However, political leaders and their parties realise that if they want to bounce back, they have to win over the trust of the Jat belt. The belt comprising Rohtak, Sonipat, Jind and Jhajjar districts usually decides the fate of political parties and the rest of the state merely follows the trend.

This has been so ever since Haryana came into being 40 years ago. Former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal remained a backbencher till this area adopted him. Once that happened, he won from Rohtak and Sonipat Lok Sabha seats and from the Meham Assembly seat. However, Meham rejected his son Om Parkash Chautala in the nineties and he could not stage a com back till this belt extended support to him in the 2000 Assembly poll.

Former Chief Minister, the late Bansi Lal, managed to create his own party - the Haryana Vikas Party-and bounced back to power in 1996 only after this area lent him its support.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda rose to head a Congress government in Haryana after he ousted the Chautalas from this area. He first defeated Devi Lal and then emerged as the Jat belt’s very own undisputed leader.

Bhajan Lal’s decision to announce his future plans at a rally here too are aimed at registering his presence here because he realises that without Rohtak, he stands no chance of staging a comeback.

The Hooda camp is not worried. Both the Chief Minister and his son Lok Sabha member Deepender Singh Hooda are sparing no effort to maintain their hold. The father-son duo loses no opportunity to mingle with the people of the area on one pretext or the other which is yielding results.

Power setup in 120 villages to be modernised

Hisar, November 13
The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has selected 120 villages - 20 villages in each operation circle area - under the first phase of its campaign for renovation and modernisation of the power distribution system.

It was disclosed at a recent meeting held for reviewing the operation activities of the nigam here. Mr Ashok Lavasa, Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary (Power), Government of Haryana, chaired the meeting, which was attended by Lt-Gen (retd) Onkar S. Lohchab, Chairman, Haryana Power Transmission and Distribution Corporation, and Mr Vijayendra Kumar, Managing Director, DHBVN.

Renovating the power distribution system, the nigam is setting up additional transformers as per requirement, replacing old conductor and iron poles and realigning and re-erecting the distribution lines in a way that maximum consumers get their supply from independent service cables.

Aerial bunched cables (ABC) or the armoured cables are being used for replacing old service cables and the meters are being shifting outside of premises of the consumers so that the consumers are relaxed from the responsibility of meters and cuts in service cables.

Addressing the officers, Mr Lavasa said the demand-side management should be given utmost importance by the officers for reliable power supply in the state. To bring administrative efficiency in the nigam’s working, he directed the officers to decide a charge sheet involving minor penalty within 45 days and involving major punishment within 120 days.

SEZs will create jobs, says Chief Minister
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 13
Close on the heels of clearing a 3,000 acre multi-product Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Ambala district by the Haryana Government, the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, today praised the concept of SEZ at a gathering of representatives of panchayati raj institutions from the district.

Addressing the representatives at his residence here, Mr Hooda said SEZs were a useful way to generate jobs for unemployed young men and women in the state.

The Chief Minister said his objective was to attract investment amounting to Rs 2 lakh crore to the state and also generate 10 lakh jobs in the coming years. Since the scope of jobs in the government sector was limited, big industries and their ancillary units spawned by the SEZ projects would be useful.

On opposition to the SEZ projects, Mr Hooda said the critics were actually not able to stomach the industrial investments attracted by Haryana since he took over as the Chief Minister.

Mr Hooda also announced that the state government’s plan to provide a drinking water connection to every house in the state would be launched in Ambala district on November 19.

600 girls attend classes in ‘unsafe’ building
Deepender

Jhajjar (Bahadurgarh), November 13
About 600 girls attend classes in government girls senior secondary school in Bahadurgarh building of which is said to be unsafe. The Municipal Council here got a survey of old buildings which pose a threat to people in the town, on the direction of the Subdivisional Magistrate. Among other private and government buildings, this school situated near the Jhajjar road also figures in the list prepared by the council. The civic body has recommended these buildings be demolished.

The school building is 40-year old and in bad shape for many years. The authorities concerned never bothered to either shift the school to another suitable place or re-construct the building. The school has 10 rooms for classes, all leaking and plaster peeling off walls. Even wooden-beams supporting the roof have become very weak and students and the staff are unsafe in rooms especially in monsoon. Sources in the school told the Education Department had shifted the school to an old hospital building in 2003. But, the then Principal did not like the transfer and after political intervention it was shfited back here in three months. Even as the building needs overhaul, minor repairs were undertaken which were far from satisfactory.

Principal of the school Ms Sneh Lata said she had taken up the matter with higher authorities and has been sent to the government for the construction of 20 rooms.

She told the school had got this project prepared from private contractors as the Public Works Department refused to do so.

When informed that the council had recommended demolition of the building, she agreed the existing building was a serious threat needed demolition. The Principal informed, “Students from class VIII to class 10+2 study here while class VI and class VII were shifted to another building due to lack of space.” The school has a staff teaching and non-teaching employees.

Other such buildings include the Punjab Wakf Board office, a historical fort, and 13 houses situated in interior parts where families live. The SDM, Bahadurgarh, Mr Manoj Kumar has ordered the state Public Works Department (Building and Roads) to have a fresh inspection of these sites before razing these buildings.

Scores of patients at the civil hospital faced a tough time this afternoon after the district administration allowed protesting workers from the Liberty Shoes Company to hold a rally at the hospital.

Hospitals fall under “silence zone'' and even blowing horn in the complex is prohibited there. In utter violation of this the rally was held near the trauma centre and the worker leaders used loudspeakers to register their protest. The doctors as well as patients objected to this.

Several district officials, including SDM, Tehsildar, DSPs from Karnal and Assandh were present on the spot to “oversee'' the police bandobast much before the workers arrived at the hospital complex.

Talking to TNS a number of patients and doctors condemned the district administration for giving permission to hold a rally at the hospital and allowing the use of public address system. A number of patients complained that entire hospital staff rushed to the rally after hearing the noise.

The slogan-raising workers were protesting against the district authorities for forcibly shifting five workers to the local hospital late last night. These workers of Liberty Shoes Company had been on chain hunger strike for the past three weeks. The management had not talked to these protsting workers all this while.

Coming down heavily on the state government leaders of the workers critcised the Chief Minister, Mr B.S Hooda, for taking a top Liberty official along with him on a foreign business tour. The general secretary of CITU, Mr Satbir Singh, charged Mr Hooda for not putting any effort to end the deadlock between the management and the workers.

He said workers had not been taken back on rolls by the company and were facing hardships due to unemployment for the past five months.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
