Walls, roundabouts, poles continue to be defaced with poll posters
Ludhiana, November 13
While the Prime Minister's visit might leave the city sparkling clean due to a massive cleanliness drive, residents will have a difficult time in removing numerous posters related to the Congress rally that have been pasted literally in every nook and corner of the city, defacing public property.

Journal to foster better police, public ties
Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 13
Claiming that the Darpan, monthly journal launched recently by the Punjab Police, will felicitate proximity of the uniformed force with the public. This was stated by Mr Rachhpal Singh Hara, DSP, Malerkotla, at a function organised at Bhogiwal village, near here, today. He urged office-bearers of various social and educational organisations to read the journal and have first hand information about the working of the police.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Rajya Sabha member Lala Lajpat Rai today criticised the Vikas Yatra being taken out by the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, in the state.

Vegetable prices start declining
Ludhiana, November 13
Vegetable prices, after continually remaining very high during and even after the festive season, have finally begun looking downwards. Thanks to improved local supply, a decline of 35-40 per cent in the prices of most vegetables in the wholesale market has taken place in the past few days. According to traders, the downward trend will continue till the beginning of the next month at least.

The SSP, Ludhiana, Mr A.S. Rai, yesterday suspended SHO of Division No. 4 Surinder Pal Singh on the charge of trying to outrage the modesty of a nurse in a hospital on Saturday night.

 
AGRICULTURE

New techniques needed to better farmers' income
Ludhiana November 13
The Punjab Agriculture University Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S. Aulakh, has said agriculture in Punjab has received a serious blow in the productivity of rice and wheat during the past few years. Ever rising cost of cultivation has greatly lowered the profits of farmers. “A large number of tractors, tube wells and good lifestyle of farmers are all deceptive”, he said. “The fact is that Punjab farmers are under debt. The need of the hour, therefore, is to bring a drastic change in farming in order to raise the income of the farmers”.

Games, contests mark Children’s Day celebrations

Damages sought for death of son
Ludhiana, November 13
Mr Anwar Ali, father of deceased Ruab Ali, aka Bhola, had sought damages to the tune of Rs 5 lakh, levelling allegations of causing death of his son, against Jagjit Singh Chawla of Janakpuri by electrocuting.

Hectic lobbying on for medical council poll

Hectic lobbying and canvassing is on in the city as well as elsewhere in the state for the election of three members from amongst qualified doctors to the Punjab Medical Council (PMC), scheduled to be held on November 28.The nominations having been filed by the contenders and the date for withdrawal of candidature being over, nine candidates, including four from the mega city, are left in the field.

Diabetes becoming epidemic: expert
Ludhiana, November 13
Diabetes mellitus is a disease of metabolic disorder that has one common feature - hyperglycemia (elevated blood glucose level). Hyperglycemia may occur as a result of reduced insulin secretion, decreased usage of glucose in the body and increased glucose production.

More than 150 patients were examined at a free eye check-up camp, which was organised by the Lions Club under the supervision of Dr Ravinder Kochhar, president of the club, at Lord Mahavira Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital here yesterday. Medicines were given free of cost to the patients.
