Terror-stricken families migrate from Doda village
Chamba, October 4 Confirming the incident, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Police Headquarters Chamba, Mr. Choudhary, disclosed that the police officials headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police had rushed to the site to verify the antecedents of these migrants who had been camping at Tarela village. The migrants were being given eatables and were being provided with other amenities, including lodging, by the local administration of Churah subdivision. According to another information from the Tarela village falling in Tissa sector these migrants had crossed over the Nodal Dhar bordering Chamba district to take refuge in the Tissa security sector of Chamba district. About 12 days earlier, there was a clash between terrorists and the village defence committee of Sakhan village in which one terrorist was killed. To retaliate the killing, the terrorists had openly threatened to kill the residents of Sakhan village. Apprehending attack by the terrorists, the villagers decided to migrate towards Tissa sector finding it safe area for shelter. These families crossed over the Nodal Dhar timberline treading many kilometers tough hilly terrain on foot and reached Tarela village in Chamba district last evening. The similar incident had occurred in June 1994 when Hindu families had to migrate from Gandoh area of Doda district out of terrorists' fear. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Pushpendra Rajput, could not be contacted till the filing of the story. |

Nahan, October 4 Dy. S.P. Paonta Police, Mr Padam Chand, told this correspondent today that early this week the Paonta Police on a tip off had raided business premises of shopkeeper Dharmender Singh in Patlion village and recovered 20 quintals of rice packed in 20 bags. The rice was meant to be sold at government controlled price depots in the Paonta area to the weaker section of the society. After the arrest and interrogation of the shopkeeper, the fact came out that in charge of Paonta branch of H.P. Civil Supplies Corporation and his son were directly involved in the deal. Police officer said the corporation officials in a report sent to police had admitted that rice was missing from their store. |
Accused in triple murder case held
Dharamsala, October 4 The accused in his mid-forties besides the triple murder in Kandharal village a week back, he is charged with a murder case in Mandi district on April 22, 2006 and for two attempts to murder in Kurukshetra also where he killed a man. The accused was nabbed in a joint operation of the HP and Haryana. After his identification, a police party from Dharamsala had gone to the accused’s village and got valuable leads from the villagers and his family members, said police sources. |

Sanawar celebrates Founder’s Day
Sanawar, October 4 Addressing the students and staff of the Lawrence School, Sanawar, on the occasion of their 159th Founder’s Day celebrations, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to excel in academics and not give overtly undue significance to the extra-curricular activities. Lauding the Headmaster’s role in achieving high academic standards, he said the school was prospering well under his guidance. He said the impressive band display and parade exhibited by the students was comparable with the army’s disciplined shows. While such perfection is the school’s pride it may be the army’s envy. The school has produced students who had excelled in various fields, including politics. He was making a reference to Omar Abdullah, an ex-student of the school. He also inspected the school NCC parade. The students organised an impressive marchpast. The highlight was a flypast involving two Jaguar fighters of Indian Air Force, cruising at 900 kms per hour. The show was led by Wing Commander Alok Joshi and Sq. Ldr. Sourav Yadav. An old students marchpast also formed part of the day where old students from batches as old as 1958 and 1960 also participated. Addressing the students and staff, the Headmaster, Mr Praveen Vashisht, enlisted the achievements of his school. He said the school had improved its class average of classes XII and X by 4.5 per cent and 5.5 per cent, respectively. As many as 18 shooters had qualified for the All-India Inter-School Championships to be held later this year at Ahmedabad. Later the Chief Minster and his wife MP Ms Pratibha Singh gave away the prizes to those excelling in various academic and sports events. Ajeet Bajaj, a 1983 batch old student, was given the newly constituted Achiever of the Year award. He earned the honour for becoming the first Asian to ski to the North Pole. He is now planning an expedition to the South Pole in January 2007. Angad Gund and Vasudha Sehgal received the Chief of the Army Staff’s Trophy for the best all round boy and girl, respectively. Yajur Sharma won the best cadet award. Catherine Longman Cup for public speaking was bagged by Himalaya House while the Vindhya House bagged the trophy for academic excellence. Prominent among the old students were Mr. Omar Abdullar, MP, who is President of Old Sanawarians Association; Mr. Farooq H. Kiyani, Principal of The Lawrence School, Pakistan, his two staff members and 17 students. A delegation from The Lawrence School, Lovedale, Ooty (Tamil Nadu), were also present. In fact, it is the first time in the school's history that students from these three schools have got together. |
