Two Tribune journalists awarded
Shimla, September 26 The national award was conferred on Saurav Sanyal (NDTV) for 2004, the state awards to Shashi Kant Sharma (Dainik Tribune) and Vijay Puri (Divya Himachal) for 2003 and 2004, respectively. The district-level awards were bagged by Birbal Sharma (Dainik Bhaskar), Chanchal Pal Chauhan (Business Standard) and Kuldeep Chauhan (The Tribune). Addressing a gathering, the Chief Minister lauded the role of the journalists in national reconstruction and bringing social and economic transformation. The journalists, thus, had a crucial role to play in the emerging scenario. During the freedom struggle, the media helped in infusing the spirit and patriotism among the masses and in the post-independence era, it waged a crusade against various social evils. The responsibility of the media had increased. He said the media provided a two-way link between the government and people. It educated masses about the policies and programmes of the government and at the same time provided authentic feedback about the response of the people. He urged the media to focus more on development reporting and highlight the changing face of the rural areas. |

Shimla, September 26 The police succeeded in arresting Munir from Tara Devi here today. Even though his family is back in Gopalganj, he had come here hoping to get bail from the court as the Himachal police had practically been camping at his native place and raiding his house frequently. A police team from Himachal had returned unsuccessful from Gopalganj, native place of Munir Alam twice, where they had gone to arrest him. Munir is an employee of the Central Government and posted here. However, he had not reported on duty after August 16 after remaining on leave for some time. Police sources said Munir was a very important link in the whole case as he was in direct touch with the main persons, including Goverdhan Singh Gaba. “He came here to seek bail as his wife had been hospitalised and he had withdrawn his children from a school in Shimla, where they were studying while he was posted here,” said police sources. |

Tehsildars face disciplinary action
Dharamsala, September 26 This was confirmed here yesterday by Deputy Commissioner Bharat Khera. The district administration had recently got an inquiry conducted into the case to fix responsibility. An amount of around Rs 50 lakh was allegedly wrongfully disbursed to families of Kashmiri migrants after they produced fake income certificates that their monthly income was less than Rs 10,000. It came to light following an audit objection by the Auditor-General. The families which had migrated from Kashmir in the 90s were entitled for a daily allowance of Rs 15 per member, provided his income was less than Rs 10,000, for which they had to produce a certificate. Besides sending show-cause notices to the officials concerned, the 38 families could also be asked to refund the relief amount. |
Pilgrim from Delhi drowned in khud
Kangra, September 26 According to Mr Virender Thakur, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kangra, Parveen, a son of Devi Sharan of Delhi, along with his family and other relatives, was on way to this town to pay obeisance at the Bajjreshwari Temple on the fourth day of the Ashwin Navratra today. He said that they stopped the vehicles near the old Kangra bridge on the outskirts of this town and decided to have a bath in the Banner khud. Parveen jumped into the khud and another boy rushed to inform his parents, but by that time he was drowned. He said that it took some time to fish out the body of the child which later was handed over to his parents after a postmortem examination.

Rise in crime in Baddi area Baddi, September 26 Mr Manohar Sharma (47), production manager, of the local unit was allegedly assaulted by a man and robbed of Rs 50,000 and a gold chain on the night of September 12. Soon after a threat letter was issued by unidentified person to a local industrialist to pay a ransom or face the consequences. The letter, written in Hindi, was found pasted on the gate of Hindustan Power Instrument Private Limited at Jharmajri. It was first noticed by unit supervisor Sanjay Chauhan. He brought it to the notice of unit manager Ravi Sharma. A sum of Rs 50,000 had been demanded as ransom. According to the letter, the money had to be delivered at a specific place on Vardhman road at Katha village in the evening. He approached the police, which made a plan to trap the person. The area of delivery was cordoned off by the police, but nobody showed up to collect the ransom till late in the night. DSP, Nalagarh, Sandeep Dhawal said as per the contents of the letter the plot was apparently not a handiwork of professional criminals. On September 14, three youths looted a person. The police had launched an operation on the border area of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana and arrested them from the forest area of Kholmlola. The youths were identified as Rajinder Singh (22), Sukhwinder Laddi (20) and Gurpreet Singh (21). They all hailed from Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab. In another robbery case, three youths had snatched Rs 90,000 from a man who was on his way to home after withdrawing the amount from bank. The youths had thrown chilly powder in the eyes of the victim. They fled towards maize fields after snatching the bag containing the money. During search operation, the police found a packet of currency worth Rs 10,000 besides the bank passbook of the victim. Meanwhile, an undertrail in a theft case escaped from Barotiwala police station recently. |
