Manmohan in Ludhiana today
Ludhiana, September 26
The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, will visit Ludhiana tomorrow. His special plane is scheduled to land at the Halwara airbase at around 9 am. From there he will fly in a helicopter to PAU. From PAU, he will be taken to Guru Nanak Stadium. He will be accompanied by the Railways Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav, and senior officers of the Ministry.

SAD times stir to coincide with PM’s visit
Chandigarh, September 26
By timing the launch of its agitation from Ludhiana on September 27, the day the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, arrives there, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has set the alarm bells ringing among the top brass of the Punjab Government as well as in the police force and intelligence agencies.
The general secretary of the SAD, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, who will lead the first jatha of Akali agitators to Ludhiana on September 27, today declared that his party’s dharna in Ludhiana on that day would signal the start of an "anti-loot" agitation to stop rampant corruption under the regime of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. 

City Centre: firm was not qualified to bid, says SAD
Chandigarh, September 26
A day before the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, is scheduled to visit Punjab, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today produced documents to claim that Today Homes, the company that was awarded the contract for the City Centre in Ludhiana, was a loss-making firm and was not even qualified to bid for the project.

CM, Bajwa thank God for saving them in chopper crash
Kahnuwan (Gurdaspur), September 26
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and PWD and Education Minister Partap Singh Bajwa today organised a ‘Shukrana’ rally to pay obeisance to God for saving them in the helicopter crash during a recent visit of the Chief Minister to Sri Hargobindpur area of the district.

Ticket: Dhindsa admits to differences with BJP

Secretary-general, SAD, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa today indirectly admitted that the party was having differences with the state unit of the BJP over the distribution of ticket for the coming Assembly elections.

Stir in Punjab politics
Ludhiana, September 26
The events have covered full circle. In the previous Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections, Captain Amarinder Singh went to the electorate on the slogan of corruption and mal administration. This time Mr Parkash Singh Badal wants to go to the electorate on the same slogan. Events that are unfolding seem to be helping Mr Badal. The recent discovery of Ludhiana City Centre scam has come handy for the opponents of Captain Amarinder Singh within his own party and the main opposition. Mr Parkash Singh Badal and his son, Mr Sukhbir Singh, are out to exploit the situation and they are fully gearing up the machinery for the purpose. Unprecedented scenes were witnessed in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha which have been described as a rare phenomenon in the history of a democratic institution. The Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha suspended all the opposition members. They were asked to vacate the House. But they continued to sit in their seats and raised slogans against the Chief Minister and the Local Bodies minister.

ITC funds: Takht action against SAD likely

Polio case detected 
Chandigarh, September 26
The first polio case in the past three years was confirmed in Punjab today. A one-year-old child, Jatinder Kumar, of Dasuya, Hoshiarpur, has been found to be polio positive by the Central Drug Laboratory, Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh following a test.

Murder case against Sidhu: hearing on 
Chandigarh, September 26
Cricketer-turned-MP Navjot Singh Sidhu’s legal troubles seem to have erupted again. In what could turn out to be a serious setback to his party’s efforts to field him against Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh from the Patiala constituency in the next Vidhan Sabha elections, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today fixed November 16 as the next date of hearing on the appeals filed by the Punjab Government and a Patiala resident against the acquittal of Sidhu in a murder case.

Procurement of paddy begins
Fatehgarh Sahib, September 26
The process of paddy procurement by government agencies has started in the district. Ms Jaspreet Talwar, Deputy Commissioner, accompanied by officials of the procurement agencies and District Mandi Officer, Mr Ramesh Gupta, inaugurated the process today by making a purchase at grain market, Sirhind.

Farmers given assurance on waiving loans
Ropar, September
The Parliamentary Secretary, Industry and Commerce, Mr K.P.S Rana, today assured farmers that the state government would soon make an announcement on waiving loan. He was addressing a farmers’ gathering from the district and also Mohali who came here to attend a training camp organised by the Agriculture Department.

2 police officials dismissed
Chandigarh, September 26
The Punjab Police today dismissed two policemen, including the Station House Officer of Banga, while two others were suspended on charges of indulging in anti-social activities and corruption.

5 booked for duping people of crores
Muktsar, September 26
A company has duped people of about Rs 15 crore here and its proprietors are reported to be absconding. The city police has registered a case against firm directors Gurcharan Singh, Udik Chand, Gurmeet Singh, Manjeet Singh and Sanjeev Kumar under Sections 465, 467, 468, 471, 420, 419 and 120-B of the IPC.

PTU ‘fails’ to declare BCA student’s result in three years
Bathinda, September 26
Gagandeep Singh, a student of BCA, appeared in re-appear examination in semester six three years back, but Punjab Technical University (PTU) is yet to declare his result. Alleging this, his father today rued that he was running from pillar to post for his son’s result for the past couple of years, but to no avail.

Counselling for BE courses

According to the Dean, University Instruction, Panjab University, the fourth counselling for admission to BE courses will be held for UIET and DCET, Panjab University, Chandigarh, in accordance with eligibility conditions contained in the joint admission brochure.
