Prevention of dengue the only safeguard

In the wake of the sudden increase in the number of dengue cases in the city and elsewhere in the district, medical specialists have stressed that there being no specific treatment for this viral fever, prevention remained the only effective safeguard against the mosquito-borne disease.

1 hurt as tanker hits tractor-trailer

An unidentified person was injured when a tanker carrying LPG turned turtle near Oswal Hospital after colliding with a tractor-trailer loaded with cow dung cakes this morning. Police sources said the injured person was riding the tractor.

Ludhiana girl is Army Lieut
Samrala, October 4
Supriya Kaushal, the only girl from Ludhiana district to be selected in the Army as Lieutenant, was honoured at a function held by the Sports Welfare Committee of the Shiv Mandir Parbandhak Committee of Chehalan, 3 km from here, on the eve of the yearly sports function and Dasehra celebrations on Monday evening.

Carnival of Lights from October 6

Joy de Vivre and Purnam will once again hold a bazaar — Carnival of Lights, 2006 — in the city. It will be held in association with Nirdosh, a school for mentally challenged children run by the Inner-wheel Club of Ludhiana. The two-day carnival will begin on October 6 at Rotary Bhavan, Sarabha Nagar.

Two ultrasound centres sealed

Cracking the whip on ultrasound scan centres in the district for irregularities and violations of the Pre-natal Sex Determination Test Act, a team of health officials, led by Dr Reena Sandhu, District Family Welfare Officer, today sealed two scan centres — the City Nursing Home in Civil Lines and Veena Nursing Home in Harcharan Nagar, near Samrala Chowk — in the city for an indefinite period.

Four held for bid to break open ATM

The police last night arrested four persons, who were planning to break open an ATM of Punjab National Bank on the Gill road. Giving details about the incident, SI Surjit Singh told mediapersons today that one thief managed to escape.

The art form of ‘doha’ has enraptured the minds of people since long. In two rhyming lines, the poet conveys his ideas in a succinct manner. It resembles the couplet in a ghazal that is independent in its meaning so far as the other couplets are concerned.

More than 700 patients were examined at a free medical check-up camp organised by the Sant Nirankari Mandal at Khanna yesterday. Baba Hardev Singh, the mandal chief, blessed the visiting team of doctors for their gesture to humanity.

MP, Karnataka register easy wins

On the second day of the 20th All-India Postal Hockey Tournament being played at the Prithipal Singh Memorial Astro Turf Stadium at Punjab Agricultural University, here today, the Madhya Pradesh circle and the Karnataka circle scored easy wins. In the first match of the day, the Karnataka circle toyed with the Jharkhand circle and registered a comfortable 7-0 victory. Adarsh Ganpati scored a hat-trick while Parkash Chalke struck twice.

KFC to sponsor Windies team for ICC trophy

KFC today announced its decision to sponsor the West Indies cricket team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2006, which will be held in India from October 7 to November 5.
