Alawalpur suffers from poor civic amenities
Alawalpur (Jalandhar), March 5 At many places here, the roads are completely worn out and commuters prefer moving on the edges on either sides of the roads. It takes at least 20 minutes to cover the six-km-distance from Kishangarh on the Jalandhar-Pathankot Road to Alawalpur, which could have been easily covered in six to eight minutes. This important link road further runs three-and-a-half km from Alawalpur to Adampur falling on the Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur Road. Since the road has almost vanished at many places, commuters are forced to use longer routes. The roads were laid about 15 years ago and have been in a bad shape since then. The residents here said that whenever by-elections come, ministers and politicians come asking for votes and making tall promises of ensuring civic facilities to them, but nothing happens later. The residents have now decided to hold a “black flag” protest in the town whenever their MLA, Mr Kanwaljit Singh Lally, visits the town. “Mr Lally had committed to get the roads strengthened and widened in a fortnight on the Republic Day, but there has been no progress in the work,” one of the residents alleged. The town is historically significant since its municipal committee was set up way back in 1869. Also, the first Inspector General of Punjab, Sant Parkash Singh, was from this town. Even the grandparents of Ms Parneet Kaur, the wife of the Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, reside here. The in-laws of prominent personalities including, Mr K.P.S. Gill, former DGP, Punjab, Mr Simranjit Singh Maan, SAD (Amritsar) and Mr Raj Mohinder Singh Majitha, MP, Rajya Sabha, also live here. However, the residents say there in no drainage system for sewage water. A pool of the dirty water filled to the brim stands behind a Shiv Temple and another one close to the Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School. Open drains pass on either side of the roads in the town. A subsidiary health centre, which was to be developed into a six-bed hospital, now has only one bed and remains open from 9 am to 3 pm. Mr Surjit Singh, a resident here, rued that the roads to the Jalandhar were so bad that “a patient’s condition is bound to worsen if he is taken out of the town.” Mr Lally could not be contacted for his comments. |
Burning of stubble near ammo depots banned
Jalandhar, March 5 The district administration and the Army officials had received the information that some farmers, having their farms close to the ammunition dump at Mand village and near other ammunition depots, were burning wheat and paddy stubble in the vicinity of the depots. Also, they were raising private buildings there. Apart from causing huge financial loss to the Army, this could also endanger the lives of hundreds of people putting up in the vicinity of the ammunition depots. To prevent any such loss, the Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ashok Gupta, has issued two separate orders, whereby the burning of wheat and paddy stubble near the depots has been banned with immediate effect. Also, any construction or new building within a distance of 500 yards from the crest of the outer perimeter of the works of defence, such as the Army Depot at Suranussi, and other depots would be considered illegal, says the DC’s order. In case of the ammunition dump at Mand, no one would be allowed to construct any building in the fields within a radius of 1200 yards of the depot and action would be taken against the violators under the provisions of Section 144 of the CrPC. |
