Ludhiana in women's section and the Baba Lodhiana Academy in men's section emerged champions in the 56th Senior Punjab Basketball Championship which concluded at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. In women's final, hosts Ludhiana rallied to oust Jalandhar 59-45.

Johar gives grants to 7 organisations
Ludhiana, March 5
The Education Minister, Punjab, Mr Harnam Dass Johar, has announced that the government has launched a plan for the development of the urban areas and the Municipal Development Fund amounting to Rs 991 crore is being spent to provide drinking water to 117 towns and sewerage in 37 towns of the state by March 31, 2007.

The Orthopedic Department at Civil Hospital here has successfully performed a knee replacement surgery on 55 -year -old Ram Naresh — the first in a government hospital of the state.

Mega mart overcharging, says consumer
Ludhiana, March 5
A departmental store, Vishal Mega Mart, on Ferozepore road here, which claims to offers consumer goods at cheaper rates, has been charged by an employee of a mobile phone company with charging rates more than the maximum retail price mentioned on the goods.

It took the scare of the bird flu to keep many diehard non-vegetarians away from the chicken diet. All homilies on vegetarianism had fallen flat on these fanatics. They had no problem in killing for the sake of their taste buds, but when the kill became a threat to their lives, they chickened out.

Over 600 residents of the town availed of the facilities provided at a Lok Suvidha camp organised under the supervision of Dr Indu, SDM, Malerkotla, at M G M N Senior Secondary school here yesterday. Mr Razia Sultana, Parliamentary Secretary, presided over the function which was attended by functionaries of various departments and thousands of residents from the area.

19 couples tie nuptial knot
Ludhiana, March 5

"Do not make graveyard in your uterus by killing the foetus of girl child inside. Give up intoxicants and just have two children and see that you educate them," advised Sarwan Kumar, chairman of the Nishkam, addressing 19 couples at the mass marriage held today. Marriages of 19 poor girls took place this afternoon at Nishkam Sewa Ashram, Daad village.

Textile industry benefits from TUF

Industrialists from the textile sector in the state have been given subsidies to the tune of Rs 1,594 crore under the technological upgradation fund scheme. As many as 535 industrial units have availed of the benefit of the scheme.

1000 examined at eye camp
Ludhiana, March 5
More that 1,000 patients were examined and over 100 of them were identified for operations at the 25th free eye check-up camp, organised by the United Youth Federation at Partap Nagar here today. A team of doctors, led by eye surgeon Dr G.S. Dhami conducted the camp and distributed medicines among the patients free of cost.

Ludhiana, March 5
The two-day 52nd annual athletics meet of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College concluded yesterday. More than 400 students in morning, evening, pharmacy and girls sections competed for the honours in around 50 events.
