Farmers’ concern over diversification valid: expert
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, March 5
The reluctance on part of most of the farmers to switch over to other crops other than rice and paddy remains justified as long as they do not have an assured price, or at least assured market for alternative crops.

Dr T. Haq, chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, also agreed that unless there was sufficient demand for other crops, it was difficult for farmers to give up paddy and wheat.

Dr Haq, who was here recently to inaugurate the Kisan mela at the Punjab Agricultural University, pointed out that despite the fact that the government fixed minimum support prices for 25 crops, it was paddy and wheat that got an easy buy.

And in some cases even these two crops did not have adequate buyers.

Farmers had been arguing that even if the government did not purchase paddy and wheat, there was a huge demand for these two crops.

Indians consumed either wheat or paddy or both. “We have more than a billion consumers within our country,” a farmer pointed out, while the market for other crops suggested by the experts and scientists was not certain and assured.

Dr Haq also agreed with the farmers that they had valid reasons to stick to paddy-wheat cycle as these two crops were consumed all over the country.

Moreover, he pointed out that if farmers found some other lucrative options, they would not take much time to make a switchover.

He advocated encouragement of farmers to go for value additions.

The farmers also argue that in case they switched over to other crops, country might no longer remain secure in terms of food.

“It is because of the abundance of food grain like wheat and paddy that a country of one billion people does not face food security, otherwise we will have crisis,” they felt arguing that the time had not come for giving up the traditional crops.

Dentist bares ‘teething’ problems
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 5
Following the basics of oral hygiene was the rallying point for all senior citizens and member of the PAU Pensioners’ Associations at a dental awareness seminar on the PAU campus here yesterday.

Those attending the seminar, organised by Thind Dental Clinic under the “Mission Smile” project, were unanimous of the view that there was no substitute for teeth.

Piara Singh Gill, who had been wearing dentures for the past 41 years, advised the gathering to take care of their teeth for a longer life.

The seminar started with a welcome address by Mr K.S. Thukral, in which he dwelled upon the project.

Dr Thind delivered a talk on latest trends in dentistry and educated the gathering about proper care of teeth, golden rules of oral hygiene and common dental problems through an audio-visual aid.

He also gave a demonstration on brushing techniques and flossing.

In a dental parliament, which followed the presentation, different members of the association spoke about their dental conditions.

Expressing his agreement with speakers, Dr Thind said people generally visited dentists only when the dental conditions went out of hand and hence dentists were dreaded by patients.

He stressed the need for preventive dentistry so that there was no pain, anxiety and extra expenditure.

He said nerve endings were way below the enamel. These nerve ending relayed pain to the brain and by the time these were exposed, a major decay of the tooth had already set in and it was the agonising pain that brought patients to a dental surgeon.

He advised people to undergo dental check-up every six months.

In the course of his presentation, Dr Thind displayed slides of “baby bottle tooth syndrome”, a life-style disease among children, mostly of working mothers.

In such cases, mothers fed milk to their babies with bottle at night and the babies went to sleep with the bottle in their mouth.

“The sweetened milk that stays in the baby’s mouth for the whole night decays the upper anterior teeth. This leads to deformed growth of teeth and erratic personality development of the child.”

Suresh Pal Sharma, H.K. Sharma, Avtar Singh Taneja, Jagdish Vasudeva, Surjit Singh, Saudagar Singh and S.S. Sharma, among others, participated in the discussion and expressed their views in the dental parliament.
