Haryana plugs water loss
New Delhi, February 11 In a letter to the DJB, the UYRB has now asked it to provide a daily report of the water being withdrawn from the Yamuna via the Sangam Pumping Station at Wazirabad. The DJB has also been asked to resolve the water shortage at Bhagirathi plant with Uttar Pradesh and instruct its officials not to do anything that may jeopardise the water supply that Delhi was receiving. As per the agreement between Haryana and Delhi, Haryana supplies 450 cusecs of water to the Yamuna, which as per Haryana Irrigation Department (HID) officials is sufficient to maintain the capacity at Wazirabad station. However, while the DJB accuses Haryana of giving it less water, as per the HID it was being forced to increase water supply to maintain the level at Wazirabad station even though it has been facing severe water crisis since the DJB was illegally diverting Yamuna water. This unauthorised withdrawal of water by the DJB was causing a dip in the Yamuna water level, they say. As per a Supreme Court order, water level of Yamuna should be maintained at 674.5 feet. Officials of the HID M.K. Lamba told The Tribune today that Haryana could now start releasing lesser volume of water than it was being forced to in order to maintain the water level in the Yamuna by the next two of three days.” The water thus saved can now be used for irrigation and drinking purposes in Haryana.” He said in January, the HID lodged a complaint with the UYRB regarding the DJB illegally drawing water for the Bhagirathi Water Treatment Plant from the Yamuna through the Sangam Pumping Station at Wazirabad. The Bhagirathi plant otherwise got water from the Upper Ganga Canal in Uttar Pradesh and supplied water to most of the trans-Yamuna areas and Delhi. After the DJB allegedly started diverting water to the treatment plant from Wazirabad, the water level started dipping in Yamuna, forcing Haryana to send additional water to Delhi despite a water shortage at Tajewala. “This has been happening because the DJB has been illegally diverting water, even though it is UP’s responsibility to provide water for the Bhagirathi plant. We asked the DJB officials to stop doing this. When this continued we had no other option but to lodge a formal complain with the river board. “The DJB has now been directed to submit a daily report on the volume of water it withdraws from the Yamuna via the Sangam pumping station at Wazirabad,” Mr Lamba said. The river board’s letter to the DJB clearly says that 310 million gallons of water per day is supplied to Delhi from the Yamuna on priority irrespective of shortages at Tajewala in compliance with the Supreme Court order resulting in hardships to other states. |
Haryana can't give up
its water rights: Hooda
Patiala, February 11 Mr Hooda made this statement while hugging Punjab Chief
Minister Amarinder Singh at the historical Qila Mubarak here while
addressing a function connected with the formal inauguration of Swan
Lake ballet on the first day of the nine-day Patiala Hertigae Festival.
Mr Hooda, who was the chief guest and was honoured by Capt Amarinder
Singh and others with the presentation of a sword, also made it clear
that he would not use that sword against Capt Amarinder Singh, but at
the same time, he would not leave his state’s right in the sharing of
waters. The statement is significant as the Punjab Government had been
opposing the proposed construction of a 110-km distributary by
Haryana. The Haryana Irrigation Department has proposed to dig up a
channel from near Azamgarh village that borders Patiala so that the
water could be taken to Mahindergarh and other arid districts of the
state. The proposal was sent to the Punjab Government, but its
Irrigation Department had said such a channel would not be in the
interest of Punjab. Capt Amarinder Singh said the idea behind organising
the festival was to apprise the people of Punjab about the rich cultural
heritage of Patiala dyansty. |
Missing girls: contrary claims by parents, police
Hisar, February 11 The parents of the girls allege that a woman and her son of their locality were behind the abduction of their daughters. On the other hand, the police personnel investigating the case maintain that the sisters had probably left their home by themselves. Peeved at the inability of the police in tracing the missing sisters, a number of local residents and representatives of BSNL employees have begun an indefinite dharna in front of the local BSNL office. The girls’ father, Mr Gauri Shankar, today submitted a memorandum to the Haryana Education Minister, Mr Phool Chand Mulana, who was here in connection with a meeting of the Public Grievances Committee. Copies of the complaint have been sent to the Prime Minister and the state Chief Minister. According to Gauri Shankar and his wife, Gurbaksh Kaur, their daughters, Rekha, 15, and Jyoti, 14, went out on the afternoon of January 25 and have not returned till date. An FIR in this regard was registered at the Mill Gate police post. “We are working on the case and will get to the bottom of the matter,” says SHO (City) Harpal Singh, under whose jurisdiction the area falls. However, no breakthrough has been made till now, though the police has given advertisements in newspapers as well as on television. While the police maintains that efforts are being made to trace the missing sisters, the girls’ parents allege that the police is not pursuing the matter effectively. |

Protesting recruits lathicharged
Rohtak, February 11 The protestors kept the administration on tenterhooks all day as the Chief Minister was on a tour to the city. The problem was compounded by the arrival at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) here of the body of a sacked recruit who committed suicide in his village in Sonepat district early this morning. Some of these protestors wanted to go to the PGIMS and bring the body to their tent. However, they were not allowed to do so. The sacked recruits have been staging a dharna here for the past 19 days seeking their reinstatement. In August last year too the police had to use force to prevent them from storming the venue of a fuction where the Chief Minister was present. |
MC chief models for company
Panipat, February 11 Though officials of the council are aware of this, they are reluctant to take any step against their own boss. Though the rules mention that no signboard, hoardings or other publicity material can be placed along with the National Highway but here the head of the civic body himself is indulging in an illegal practice and also allegedly misusing his public office, sources said. A visit by the TNS revealed that the big signboards are displaying photograph of Mr Wadhera at different parts, including Lal Batti Chowk and Sanjay Chowk on the GT Road. The company in question offers publicity work for flex board material and also mentions the rates. When contacted, Mr D.P.S. Nagal, Deputy Commissioner, told The Tribune that it was unfair if any such activity was going on and assured that he would look into the matter. |
