Four held
: The police on Saturday arrested four persons on charges of possessing illicit liquor and recovered 1,98,750 ml of illicit liquor and 800 kg of Lahan from their possession in the Shahkot area. A case has been registered under Section 61 of the Excise Act against one Boor Singh, a resident of Beetlan, for allegedly possessing 100 kg of Lahan. Another case was registered against one Nachhattar Singh, a resident of Bili Chao, as 700 kgs of Lahan was recovered from him. Surjit Singh, a resident of Bodipur village in Nakodar, has been arrested for possessing 30,000 ml of illicit liquor. The fourth person arrested on the charges is Tejinder Singh, a resident of Billi Chao, according to the SSP, Mr Ishwar Singh. 

Workshop: A poster-making competition on “Drug and Alcohol Abuse” was held at the Apeejay College of Fine Arts. In the contest, Parminder Singh of BFA stood first, Prabhdeep Kaur of BA –III bagged the second position and Seerat Sidana of BD was declared third in the under-graduate category. In the post-graduate category, Ritu of MA II stood first followed by Mukta of MA-II on the second spot and Bindu Verma of MA I on the third position. In the digital art category, Radhika Sood of BFA-II stood first followed by Shivani and Parveen as joint second and Megha Garg of the same class third.

Contingent: The NCC Army Wing of the DAV College was declared the best marching contingent at a march past organised during the 57th Republic Day celebrations. The contingent was led by Senior Under Officer Jasleen Bains. Group Commander, NCC Group, Col D.S. Goraya and Commanding Officer, 2 Punjab Batallion, NCC, Jalandhar, Lieut-Col M.L. Sawant congratulated the cadets.

Medal: DIG (Computers and Telecommunications) Roshan Lal Bhagat has bagged the President’s Police Medal on the occasion of the Republic Day.

: The National President of Bahujan Samaj Morcha, Mr Satnam Singh Kainth, on Saturday called for a special discussion in the Punjab Assembly on issues concerning the poor and backward section of the society.

Representation
: The Gaurav Gram Sudhar Samiti (GGSS ), an NGO of the district, has made a representation to the Union Petroleum Minister, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, seeking appropriate action against oil companies as well as owners of all such petrol pumps that had been installed at various places in the district in violation of the provisions of the Conservation Act, 1980. Mr Daya Nand Yadav, president of the GGSS, said numerous green trees were still being felled.

Dowry death: The Bawal police has arrested Umesh Saini in connection with the dowry death of his newly-wedded wife Hansa Devi (19), whose body was allegedly found hanging from the ceiling in their farm house at Nangal Shahbazpur village, near Bawal, on Thursday night. On a complaint lodged by Mr Phool Singh Saini, father of the deceased, and a resident of Harsoli town of Alwar district in Rajasthan, the police has registered a case of dowry death under Sections 304-B and 498-A of the IPC.

Boy killed in road mishap
: A teenaged boy, Ajay, was killed and two others, namely Sanjay and Ravi, were seriously injured when a tractor-trolley rammed into them on the old DC road near Anand cinema house here on Friday evening.

Judicial custody: The Duty Magistrate, Ms Rajni Yadav, has sent Om Parkash, patwari of Sewli village, to judicial custody until February 2 next. The patwari had been arrested on the charge of accepting Rs 800 as bribe from a farmer, Ranbir, of Sewli village. 

Girl recovered: The police on Saturday claimed to have recovered a school girl and arrested a youth in this connection. The youth was identified as Ashutosh of Narinder Nagar. He had allegedly kidnapped and raped her. The parents of the girl had lodged a complaint with the Mahila police station in this connection. Both the girl and the youth were medically examined by doctors at the Civil Hospital and it was confirmed that the girl had been raped by the youth. 

Mushroom exhibition: The Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board will organise a mushroom exhibition on January 31 next in the tourist complex, Ethnic India, at Rai in this district. According to a report, Mr Harmohinder Singh Chatha, Agriculture Minister, will inaugurate it.
