PHRC directive to MC Commissioner

Taking a serious note of the failure of Commissioner of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC) to appear before the commission, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PHRC) has once again directed him to do so personally in connection with a case filed by a local resident claiming that the city residents were deprived of clean environment by the local body.

Non-refund of admission fee

Several parents in the city have alleged harassment at the hands of managing committees of different schools here over non-refund of admission fees of their wards.

Plan to develop urban areas
Ludhiana, January 28
Mr Surinder Dawar, Parliamentary Secretary, Power and Housing Punjab, has stated that the state government has chalked out a special plan for fast pace of development of urban areas. The government has embarked upon an ambitious program to provide drinking water to 117 towns and sewerage in 37 towns of the state under the municipal development fund at a cost of Rs 991 crore by March 31, 2007.

Bus staff rob sales officer

Staff of a private bus allegedly robbed a sales officer with a Departmental Store in Ansal Plaza here of cash and valuables while he was travelling in a private transport bus from Ludhiana to Phagwara on January 25 evening.

Politics over anniversary of martyr

Petty politics held sway over the observation of the martyrdom anniversary of a Paramvir Chakra winner, Flt-Lt Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon, in his native village here. After failing to force the village residents for adding names of certain Congress leaders on a foundation stone of a development work in the village, a group of the party workers, led by MLA Malkit Singh Dakha, laid the foundation stone prepared overnight with all necessary names.

Immolation threat; one arrested

Even as dust is yet to settle on the immolation committed by a rehri unionist-cum-Congress worker in Patiala, the city police has arrested a resident of Kashmir Nagar here for allegedly threatening to immolate himself opposite the residence of Commissioner, Municipal Corporation (MC) on the Republic Day.

Mal Singh Ghuman — a Taksali Akali

Mal Singh Ghuman was a true Taksali Akali and was a veteran freedom fighter. Ghuman, who was general secretary of the SGPC for more than six years, was at the helm of affairs of the august Sikh body when Punjab was passing through a period of turmoil and had witnessed Operation Blue atar.

The Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry today said that the Punjab Government is showing apathy on the issue of VAT refunds. “Initially the government committed to give refunds without producing forms ‘C’ and ‘H’. Later, it made obligatory to produce these forms.

The annual prize distribution function of Gobindgarh Public College, was held today at Kanhaiya Lal Badeja Hall on Gobindgarh Public School campus. Prof S.S. Bari, Registrar, Punjab University, was the chief guest.

Exhibition on social studies
Ludhiana, January 28
Students of Guru Harkrishan Public School, Doraha, organised a social studies exhibition on the school premises. Over 30 models depicting evolution of civilisation, evolution of wheel and the Kargil War were put on display. The civics section focussed on the functioning of gram panchayats, block samitis etc. The geography section dealt with the subject of soil and water conversation.

The Lala Hans Raj Memorial Inter-College Declamation Contest was organised at the AS College for Women, Khanna, on Saturday. Students from 11 colleges in Ludhiana, Khanna and Mandi Gobindgarh participated in it.

Accident case: 2-year jail for accused
Ludhiana, January 28
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr S.P. Bangarh, has sentenced Amrik Singh (35 years) of Dhandarikalan, Ludhiana, to two years imprisonment in an accident case. A fine of Rs 3,000 was also imposed upon him.

The four-day 59th Indian Dental Conference was inaugurated by the President of the Dental Council of India, Dr Anil Kohli, at Guru Nanak Bhavan here last evening. Lieut-Col Paramjit Singh from Delhi was the guest of honour.

IMA for better health care for people

The Indian Medical Association has demanded that a substantial portion of the GDP should be allocated to the health sector to provide better medical care to the people, particularly those who cannot afford it.

A two-day free eye check-up and cataract surgery camp was organised by Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Mandi Gobindgarh today. Mr Sandeep Hans, SDM, Amloh, inaugurated the camp. Dr Sanjeev Kumar and Dr Prabhakar Vardhan, along with their team, examined and operated patients. Dr Zora Singh, Chairman, Desh Bhagat group of institutes, welcomed the chief guest and doctors.

Fine batting by Bharat Malhotra (59), Sachin Sharma (51) and an equally useful allround performance of Pardeep Atwal (41 runs and 3 for 24) helped the Bhavadas Club to register a comfortable victory by 58 runs against the Aditya Club in the first Shaheed Ramesh Chander Memorial Cricket Tournament being organised by the Shaheed Ramesh Chander Memorial Welfare Society on the Daresi ground here today.

More than 400 students took part in the two-day the XXth annual athletics meet of GGN Public School, Rose Garden, Civil Lines which concluded here today. Mr Prithpal Singh Kapur, former Pro-Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar was the chief guest during the prize distribution function.
