Many disappointed by high cut-offs
New Delhi, June 25 “I have 85 percent in the best of four and the cut off for the new BA programme is 87 in Hindu. I can go elsewhere, but since this is where I want to be, I
will have to wait for the second cut off”, said Neha, a DU aspirant. But not many are willing to take this risk, especially since not too many colleges are optimistic about a dip of more than one to two percent. “In our colleges the seats in popular courses are filled almost immediately after the first list. I personally suggest that students should take admissions where they get it, because the second list may not bring the cut off down to their expectations”, said an official in Hindu College. And even as students virtually toss a coin to decide their next step, there were many disappointed faces. “It is sad that even after getting 91.25 percent, a child cannot get admission in the college of her choice”, complained a parent, RK Srivastava, whose daughter was aspiring for a seat in SRCC, where the cut off is 93 percent. The rat race, at its very competitive best and coupled with far-too-few seats is a recipe for stress. “First it was the tension of doing well in exams, and now it is about getting admission, because there is always someone with more marks than you”, lamented Rajat Panchal, who scored “Celebrations should not begin after results, they should be reserved till you get into the college of your choice,” he added bitterly And while students and their parents are left to compute the permutations and combinations of whatever the first cut-off list has thrown open, colleges on their part are splitting hairs on who is responsible for this upsurge of cut-offs. “Either it is the CBSE, which has become too liberal with the allocation of marks or children are increasingly becoming smarter. Even five years ago, a percentage between 85 to 90 was commendable, now no one talks below 90”, said an official at Hindu. “Going by the ‘trend’, it won’t be unthinkable if children begin to turn up with 100 percent marks,” he quipped. Meanwhile, students who had applied for English Hons in Vivekanand College came in for a shock when the college announced that it will conduct an entrance exam. “Initially the college did not inform the University that they conducting an exam, so more than 2000 people applied. Now even if they conduct an exam, how are they going to pull it off”, wondered the Dean, Students Welfare. |
Power tariff hike might be put off
New Delhi, June 25 It is being pointed out that the timing is not right as the general public is agitated over frequent power breakdowns and the heat wave conditions prevailing in the Capital. There have been already three hikes in the power tariff ever since it was privatized. The political leadership is of the opinion that any hike at this stage would send a wrong message to the public, which had elected them to power for a second successive term. Highly placed sources informed that the Delhi Chief Minister Ms Sheila Dikshit has discussed the power situation with her Cabinet colleagues as well as senior officials of the distribution companies responsible for supplying power in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Meanwhile Delhiites today continued to face problems like load shedding and acute water shortage due to the continuing heat wave conditions. Agitated residents in some parts of the city took to the streets protesting against the situation, and alleged that the Delhi Government was being callous towards their concerns. |

Water shortage in many areas
of Faridabad
Faridabad, June 25 It is reported that residents have a hard time even to lodge a complaint and watch helplessly as concerned officials of the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF) try to pass the buck to each other. At the most, residents may get a promise of having a water tanker delivered by the authorities at the end of the day, which may or may not arrive. There have been several protests and demonstrations at the MCF headquarters and other places here over the issue of short supply of drinking water over the past month. Residents of Mujesar and Parvatiya colony assembled at the MCF office yesterday to protest against water shortage and raised slogans. However, when they finally managed to get the attention of some officials, they were told a water tanker would be sent to their area. No long-term solution was offered. Many residents of NH 5 area, who had staged a similar demonstration recently, allege that the MCF is “There are at least a dozen colonies in NIT area where the problem of short water supply has been one of the main issues for many years, but no solution has ever been found,” claims Mr Shiv Charan Lal Sharma, an MCF Corporator and former Senior Deputy mayor. He said a project undertaken under the Rennywell water scheme in ward number 5 had been languishing in MCF files despite official approval MCF two years back. As a result, he said, over one lakh people were thirsting for water in Jawahar Colony alone. He said people were forced to buy water from private water suppliers who had virtually emerged as a ‘water mafia’ in the region. Seeking the intervention of the Chief Minister, he said the water problem could not be solved till the government provided special funds and a long term solution. |

After brief respite, the heat is back
New Delhi, June 25 The maximum temperature recorded today was 41.1 degree Celsius, two degrees above normal, a Met department official said. It was 37.7 degree Celsius yesterday. The minimum temperature today, 30.2 degree Celsius, was also one degree above normal. A high relative humidity of 75 per cent added to the misery of Delhiites. The Capital has been reeling under plus-40 degree Celsius temperature for several weeks, with Monday being the hottest day of the year, at 45 degree Celsius. The heat wave in the region has claimed at least 11 lives so far. |
More time for allottees to pay Noida Authority
Noida, June 25 One of the decisions which will be welcomed by allottees is that the rate of interest on payment of installments to Noida authority has been reduced by 1 per cent. It will apply to allottees of all industrial, commercial, institutional and residential plots. Besides, the time limit for payment of installments has also been increased from 5 years to 8 years. The board also decided that a resettlement plan will be implemented. The land rates for setting up medical colleges have been fixed at Rs 2000 per sq mt. For government schools and colleges, land will be given on half the sector rates applicable. The Noida board also decided that land for Supreme Court Society will be allotted at a reserve price of Rs 14,650 per sq mt. Noida Chairman Deo Dutt told the Board that since the banks have reduced their interest rates, the Noida authority has also decided to cut the interest rates on installments from allottees by 1 percent, which will be now charged at 11 percent as against 12 percent so far. This decision will come in force from July 1. The chairman said that many people will benefit from a resettlement plan under which allottees will make a down payment of 30 percent of the total cost and pay the balance payment in easy installments. Mostly allottees of Shramak Kunj and EWS will benefit from this plan.
