Some parts of Capital lashed by rainfall
New Delhi, June 24 According to the Met office, the early morning rain measured up to 10.8 mm. The rains brought down the minimum temperature to three degrees below normal, with the mercury dropping to 26 degree celsius. However, these showers were in no way connected with pre-monsoon currents, India Meteorological Department (IMD) director RD Singh said. ‘’For that, Delhi will have to wait for some time more,’’ he said. These rains were the result of some local weather conditions, he clarified. |

City irked by power outages
New Delhi, June 24 “If you see the first 20 days of this month, there were no complaints as we were meeting the peak demand at 3490 MW. It was only during the last couple of days that the system fell short due to a combination of factors,” Transco’s Chief Managing Director, Arun Goel, said. “If you look at the broader picture, despite much higher electricity demand and unusually hot weather, we have been able to supply sufficiently the past month. It was the breakdown of the supply from Naphta Jhakri plant for more than 12 hours and the fact that some transformers gave up which caused the disturbance in the grid. Apart from these isolated incidents, we have had a much better record post privatisation,” he claimed. About the future he said, “we have several projects in the pipeline and by 2010, there will be sufficient capital investment in the power sector to ensure that the Delhi will meet its growing demand.” Delhi has tied up with Himachal Pradesh in Satluj Jal Nigam Limited which will provide additional 100 MW power from July 1 to October 31, 2005. It will get an additional 100 MW from the Uttaranchal Power Corporation under banking arrangement from next month, Mr Goel added. However, angry residents of several areas experiencing erratic power supply lashed out at power companies for being callous and apathetic to the situation. At several places in East, West and South Delhi, angry residents staged impromptu demonstrations to protest against power cuts which also affected the water supply to their colonies. Mr S R Sethi, Director (Operations), Transco, however blamed consumers for putting sudden additional load on the system. “It is a fact that nearly half of Delhi is consuming much more power that has been sanctioned to them. Whenever a consumer likes, he buys an air conditioner and installs it without checking whether his house can take that load. It is the responsibility of the consumer too, to inform and upgrade his capacity before overdrawing from the system, throwing the whole system out of sync,” he said. Talking about LT (Low tension) feeders, he said that “sometimes it is a local problem which can take a couple of hours to get resolved. If an LT feeder breaks down, certain areas face power shutdown but these are operational problems which occur only sometimes.” Talking about the forthcoming power tariff hike, Mr Goel said that: “Right now the government is providing transitional support in terms of power costs. However, this will decrease over time which is why the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) will decide the new tariffs after taking all factors into consideration.” |
Relative behind Ashok Vihar robbery attempt
New Delhi, June 24 Siddharth Bansal is a distant relative of the deceased Giri Raj Goyal. The police officials said that he wanted easy money, so he planned a robbery on his own relatives. According to Ashok Goel, one of the relatives of the deceased Giriraj Goyal, “The two assailants entered the house saying they knew Deepak Goyal very well and had brought some marriage gifts for him. Since Deepak was at the shop in Kashmiri Gate, Giriraj Ji picked up the mobile phone to inform him. Seeing him call someone, the assailants panicked and opened fire on him.” He said that one of the daughters-in-law of the deceased was present on the first floor of the house. She immediately informed Deepak in Kashmiri Gate about the incident, who in turn informed the police control room. Ashok Goel said, “We never expected Siddharth would do such a brutal act. I do not know why he did so with the family when he also belongs to a well-off family.” Siddharth is son of one Vinod Bansal, a Chartered Accountant by profession. He is was not much qualified and was working at a call centre where he met with one Nitin Nagpal, who suffered huge losses in a restaurant in Rohtak and was obliged to join the call centre. There Siddharth offered him good money for teaming up with him in the robbery. During investigation it was revealed that the Nitin got his weapon licensed from Rohtak and the pistol was of 0.32 bore and was of ordinance factory. The two assailants Nitin Nagpal and Ranvir along with Siddharth Bansal visited the house E-174, Phase-I, Ashok Nagar a week back and one day before the incident to check out the area. Meanwhile, a gallantry award has been recommended for Inspector Kharak Singh and out of turn promotions for the two constables and ASI injured during the award. Ironically, the labourers who actually apprehended the assailants after hitting them on their head by iron rods are still waiting even for an acknowledgement. |
DC warns officials against complacency towards work
Faridabad, June 24 The officials were warned that complacency and a laid back attitude would not be tolerated. It was the first monthly meeting chaired by the new Deputy Commissioner, Mrs G. Anupama, attended by various heads of departments and representatives of around 85 state government departments. The DC particularly stressed upon the need of immediate recovery of all the pending dues and solving of various cases pending for long. The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and the Public Health department had also failed to clear pending bills of Rs 10 crore and Rs 1.5 crore respectively. The DC asked departments like the Excise and Taxation and the Market Committee to make efforts to clear all the pending recoveries and intensify their efforts to check tax evasion by commercial establishments and other such people. She asked power department officials to launch a campaign about the special waiver scheme of pending bills of farmers announced recently by the CM, pointing out that the success of the scheme depended on how much awareness the department created about the move. She announced that about 400 power connections were disconnected in the district during the past one month for non-payment of the bills on time. She directed the Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDM) to supervise all the development schemes personally in their respective areas and submit their report to her office regularly. The officials concerned were asked to have display boards and have facility to dispense all the relevant information about the details of their work and schemes that were on in various areas for the benefit of the common man. She said people had the right to information about the schemes launched by the state and central government for their benefit from time to time. Regarding food adulteration , the Deputy Commissioner said that there was a need to take strict action against those involved in such crimes. She said as many as 308 cases of food adulteration had been pending in local courts, and added that the officials concerned should make efforts to take the services of Lok Adalats and Fast Track Courts to ensure speedy trials. She asked the Health department to improve its functioning and performance to provide medical and health facilities to people on their doorstep. The power department was requested to ensure a non-stop supply on June 26 and the next three days in view of administration of pulse polio drops during these days. |
