Extended shopping hours in Sector 17

In a step that may change the shopping pattern in city’s commercial hub, Sector 17, the Chandigarh Administration and the shopkeepers have agreed on a new timing for the sector, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

24-hour blackout in Baltana

Baltana village near Zirakpur is having a blackout the past over 24 hours. Residents are at their wits end in beating the ongoing summer heat. Certain residents have fled to the adjoining hill stations “because the heat is unbearable for children”.

Arrangements finalised to shift colony residents
Mohali, June 24
Even as the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) finalised its arrangements for the shifting of the unauthorised Guru Nanak Colony to a “makeshift” settlement near Jagatpura village tomorrow, numbers in the colony swelled by another 800 persons today in hope of bagging a PUDA plot.

Call centres appalled at data theft expose
Chandigarh, June 24
The local call centres are appalled at the confession of 24-year-old Karan Bahree, who literally sold confidential financial details of 1,000 UK nationals to Britain’s leading tabloid, The Sun, for 2,750 pounds. But at the same time they dismissed the incident as a “freak case’’, assuring clients that they take utmost care to preserve and protect personal information and identities of their clients, wherever such vital information is available to them.

One killed as trucks collide
Chandigarh, June 24
One person was killed and two injured in a head-on collision between two trucks at Rajpura this morning.

Another ITBP official dies of heat stroke
Chandigarh, June 24
Another ITBP official, inspector Jaswinder Singh, died of a massive heat stroke at the PGI, where he had been admitted with several ITBP personnel on June 22. Two ITBP personnel died of heat stroke on Wednesday, while the condition of another two remains critical.

Despite organising traffic camps, awareness weeks and ruthlessly challaning erring drivers for violations, the Chandigarh police has miserably failed to check road accidents in the city.

Sewerage cess for commercial sites may be hiked

The Municipal Corporation is increasing the sewerage cess from the existing Rs 10 to Rs 30 per seat. The rate being increased for commercial sites only comes up for a formal approval before the House next week, sources said here today.

The police today recovered 55 stolen manhole covers from two persons. The duo was arrested yesterday on the charges of possessing smack.
Sources said Vijay Kumar, alias Ravi, of Shimla and Peer Mohammad of Rai Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh were arrested yesterday from near Burial village while they were going in a rickshaw.

1 held for molestation

A Bapu Dham Colony resident was arrested by the police for allegedly molesting a woman while in another case a Mani Majra resident lodged a complaint with the police that his minor daughter was abducted.

The Department of Gandhian Studies, Panjab University, is one of the neglected and least talked about department in the university. Not many students want to pursue it at postgraduate level. But now the department has received a boost. It has received an MP grant of Rs 7.50 lakh for its expansion. The amount is being used in expanding the department building.

Chemist shop in General Hospital closed

The Health Department today closed down the chemist shop, Aarohi Medical Hall, operating in General Hospital here. The shop has been closed following complaints of overcharging received by the Health authorities.

Japneet KaurA promising skater

Japneet Kaur who has just passed Class X from Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, is good both in sports and studies. Japneet, who secured 90.8 per cent marks Class X, was the lone player from Chandigarh who represented India in the 11th Asian Roller Skating Championship held in Jeonju (South Korea) last month.
