NABBED: Six Bangladesh nationals were reportedly nabbed by immigration officials at Attari police station for allegedly possessing fake passports and visa. According to immigration sources, the accused boarded the Samjhauta Express from New Delhi and were planning to go to Pakistan.

WITHDRAWN: Activists of the Shiv Sena (Hindustan) on Thursday withdrew their road block call as they came to know that the Majitha police had registered a case of cow-slaying against the alleged accused.

DHARNA HELD: Residents of Binewal, Pipliwal and Bus Adda Binewal Jhuggian on Thursday staged a day-long dharna and blocked vehicular traffic at Binewal Jhuggian adda on the Garshankar-Nangal road in protest against the non-functioning of water supply schemes of these villages.

ELECTED: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Raj Pharmacist Association (INTUC): president — Mr Satwinder Singh Sodhi; vice-president — Mr Manjit Singh Saini; secretary — Mr Gopal Krishan Sharma and treasurer — Mr Tajinder Pal Singh.

RESENTED: Retirees from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited have resented delay in pensionary benefits given to them by the Central Government. Stating this in a press note, Mr V.S. Jolly, general secretary of the All-India Central Government Pensioners’ Association, said he had sent a memorandum in this regard to Mr A.K. Sinha, Chairman and Managing Director, BSNL, demanding that the retiring staff be paid its dues in time.

EXHIBITION: An exhibition of photographs, portraits and documents related to martyrs and freedom fighters of the Indian freedom movement was opened at Virsa Vihar here on Thursday. A collection of 193 documents and photographs, which is on display and procured by Mr Sita Ram Bansal, a teacher of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Maseetan, includes the death warrant of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and death certificates of Bhagat Singh and Madal Lal Dhingra.

Diya Mirza:
Ajanta Knitwear has appointed Bollywood actor Ms Diya Mirza, its brand ambassador for its brand ‘Rage’. Mr Sham Bansal, Managing Director, Rage group, in a press note said Ms Mirza was selected as brand ambassador to promote company’s garments in national market. He said the company had also started export of knitted garments to France. “We have decided to start a special manufacturing unit for export,” he said.

“Chabeel” organised: Punjab National Bank, zonal office, Ludhiana, organized a chabeel and langar here on Friday. Mr. Harwant Singh, General Manager, Mr. R.S. Sharma, Senior Regional Manager, along with staff members of Zonal Office, Ludhiana took part.

Transporters plan: The Ludhiana Goods Transport Association will conduct a meeting to discuss the course of action on June 28 for holding protest against hike in petroleum and diesel prices. “We will participate in the nationwide bandh on that day,” said Mr Charan Singh Lohara, chairman of the association. We are seeking the support of farmers’ unions, bus transporters unions and three wheeler drivers, the association said.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP: The staff and students of ITI here organised a voluntary blood donation camp at Blood Donors’ Complex on Thursday. The camp was sponsored by the local branch of State Bank of Patiala. Mr R.P. Tayal, DGM, inaugurated the camp, where as many as 70 units of blood were collected, informed Mr Tilak Raj Sharma, Principal.

ORGANISED: The local branch of State Bank of Patiala organised a Customers Relation Programme here on Thursday. Mr R.P. Tayal, DGM, presided over. Mr V.K. Gupta, Assistant General Manager, Mr R.K. Singhal, Chief Manager, among others apprised the customers of various new schemes launched by the bank.

SOIL CONSERVATION: Addressing a meeting of officials of the different departments at Kandi Research Centre, Bullowal Saunkhar, on Thursday, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Krishan Kumar, said Rs 3.11 crore would be spent on soil conservation programme in the Kandi area falling in the district.

POWER SUPPLY: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Krishan Kumar, while presiding over a meeting of the District Planning and Development Board here on Friday, said that 125 villages falling under the Kandi area in the district would be brought under 24- hour uninterrupted power supply scheme from tomorrow. Besides, Rs 6.81 crore was being spent on providing drinking water facility to 57 villages in the Kandi area.

SURPRISE CHECK: A surprise check was carried out at an ice factory on Friday following reports of the supply of contaminated ice. The inspecting officials warned the owner of the factory that strict action would be taken in case they got further complaints about the supply of contaminated ice. The owner of the factory, however claimed that he was supplying pure ice.

PATWARI HELD: A team of the state Vigilance Bureau on Thursday arrested Balwant Singh, a patwari, while he was taking a bribe from a farmer at Chindar village. The team also recovered the bribe money of Rs 1000 from him. A case under the Anti-Corruption Act has been registered.

HONOURED: The Rewari unit of the ABVP on Wednesday honoured meritorious students of various schools of the district who had secured distinction in the middle, matriculate and senior secondary examinations. Mr Chuni Lal Jain, Principal, Jain Senior Secondary, presided over the function.

ADMINISTERED: The oath of office and secrecy was administered to Mr Satish Yadav and Mrs Kailash Bai, Chairman and Vice Chairperson on the Rewari Zila Parishad by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Mahender Kumar, on Wednesday.

KILLED: Rajinder of Ladpur village was killed when his motor cycle was hit by the Shatabadi Express at the railway crossing between Harsana Kalar and Rathdhanna railway station near Jagdishpur village on Friday.

ARRESTED: The Sadar police, Gohana, on Friday claimed that it had arrested Vikas, alias Vikki, and Naresh Dhanak, on the charge of alleged kidnapping and raping the girl of the same village.

TOPPER: Manju of Geeta Vidya Mandir Girls College has topped Maharishi Dayanand University in B.A. part 11 examination by securing 654 marks out of 800. As the result was declared on Thursday.

KILLED: Mahender of Panchi Jatan village was allegedly beaten to death by some unidentified persons on Thursday. The Ganaur police has registered a case.

RAID: Officials of the Agriculture and the Horticulture Departments conducted surprise raids at a number of shops in the seed market area on Friday and seized samples of seeds, fertilisers and pesticides.

CONDOLENCE MEETING: A condolence meeting was held at the telephone exchange here on Thursday to pay homage to 19 BSNL employees and their families who lost their lives in a bus accident on June 20. A two-minute silence was observed.

ORGANISED: Kulu witnessed a touch of Dashera on Thursday after 120 years on the occasion of the seven-day-long ‘Shrimad Bhagwad katha’ being organised by the Raghunath mandir Bhagwad Committee. The idol of Raghunath, chief deity of Kulu, was brought to Dhalpur Dashera ground in a colourful procession along with about 150 local devi and devtas. More than 100 women carrying water from 75 rivers of India in ‘Kalash’ on their heads were part of the shobha yatra.

SANCTIONED: The Union Ministry of Rural Development has under the Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission, sanctioned Rs 42.92 crore as first instalment of funds against the provisional allocation of Rs 85.85 crore for 2005-06. As per the guidelines for implementation of Rural Water Supply Programme, 15 per cent of funds are meant for quality-related problems and 5 per cent for taking sustainability measures.

ORDERED: The Consumer Forum, Mandi has ordered Himachal Gramin Bank to pay Rs 41,048 (amount invested in FDR) along with an interest of 6 per cent from the date of maturity to Maya Ram, the forum also directed the bank to pay of Rs 1000 as damages on account of deficiency in service.

DISBURSED: The State Bank of India, Sundernagar disbursed mortgage loans worth Rs 1.05 crore at a traders, meet on Thursday. According to Mr B.S. Thakur, Manager, Loans, more than 70 traders participated in the traders meet.
