Olympic Day forgotten
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, June 24
Every year June 23 is being celebrated as Olympic Day. On this day in 1894, the International Olympic Committee was founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. In many parts of the world, fun races and other sports activities are held on this day.

While the United Nations is celebrating 2005 as the Year of Sport and Physical Education, in India the Olympic day was ignored.

It was the Haryana Olympic Association (HOA), which hosted sports functions all over the state for the past five years, coinciding with Olympic Day. With the change of Government in the state this year, Olympic Day was completely ignored and not a single sports activity could be held. Though the same team of the HOA with president Abhey Singh Chautala as president and Mr MS Malik, Secretary-General, continues to head the HOA, sports activity on this day was totally ignored.

In Chandigarh, also it was a complete miss as the Chandigarh Olympic Association failed to generate interest. Both the president Rana Gurmit Sodhi, and the secretary general, Mr Ravinder Talwar were away and no one else was aware of day. The UT Sports department also did not make any plan to commemorate the event. The Joint Director Sports, UT Mr JPS Sidhu, was also away to attend a seminar.

Similarly there was no sports activity planned by the Punjab Olympic Association to celebrate Olympic day. There have been instances when even the August 29, the National Sports Day, has been ignored in the country.

Tribune News Service

Panchkula, June 24
A Circuit House will be constructed in Sector 12-A, near the ministers’ bungalows. The Circuit House is being constructed on two vacant plots in the sector.

The Financial Commissioner, Public Works Department, Mr Dharam Vir, accompanied by Engineer-in-Chief, PWD, and senior officials of district administration today inspected the site selected for the construction of the Circuit House. As many as eight plots in Sector 12-A here are lying vacant, and two adjoining plots have been earmarked for the Circuit House.

Officials say that the need for building a Circuit House in Panchkula was felt so that it could also act as a guest house. Since Haryana Niwas at Chandigarh was often full to capacity, the Circuit House at Panchkula would serve as an alternate state guest house.

Mr Dharam Vir also inspected the Chandimandir-Jallah road, which is in a dilapidated condition. This is an important trade route as the minor minerals extracted from the Ghaggar river are ferried from this road. The Financial Commissioner also inspected the construction work of various buildings being built by PWD. It is learnt that a sum of Rs 20 crore is being spent by the PWD for construction of buildings of Education Department, Haryana Public Service Commission and Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission.
