Fulfil your promise of water for Delhi, Sheila tells Mulayam
New Delhi, June 22 “Uttar Pradesh has enough water and they also know it. I can’t understand why UP is not releasing water when there is enough water available. There have been good winter rains. The snow has also melted, hence there is enough water,” she said. “But if there is any politics taking place on the issue of giving water to Delhi, I cannot comment on that,” she added. Just back from a five-day trip to London, during which considerable confusion prevailed over the issue, Dikshit remarked that “A week back, there was official confirmation given to us that UP would release water to Delhi.” She said the UP Chief Secretary Ms Neera Yadav had called up her Delhi counterpart and informed him about the decision to release water to Delhi. “I don’t know what happened in between.” She said that Ms Yadav had confirmed that the orders for releasing the water to Delhi were being issued the same day. She was referring to June 16 when the UP Chief Secretary had called up the Delhi Chief Secretary to inform him about UP government’s decision to release 270 cusecs water to Delhi for its Sonia Vihar Treatment Plant. The very next day, UP backtracked, with the state Irrigation Minister Munna Singh Chauhan ruling out giving water to Delhi, claiming that UP had its own water problems. However, UP Chief Minister said on Monday that the state could release “some water” to Delhi provided it had “surplus” water. Under the circumstances, there still seems to be uncertainty over whether Delhi would receive the water from UP. |
Special police drive to nab criminals ends
Gurgaon, June 22 However, what is significant is that only 25 per cent of the POs and 26 per cent of the bail jumpers have been arrested in the fortnightly drive, which ended on June 15. In a rearguard action, Dr Mehta has directed the concerned district police chiefs to identify the property and initiate attachment proceedings against those still at large. In other words, the criminals still at large who pose serious challenge to the public and the police. Worse, many of the criminals evading arrest for the past many years are active members of inter-state gangs. As regard the large number of POs and bail jumpers in Faridabad district, Dr Mehta reasoned that criminals found the district convenient as it was adjacent to both Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. A large number of criminals commit crime in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh and enter Faridabad. Moreover, some of the criminals are also natives of UP. Gurgaon range includes the new district of Mewat. Meanwhile, Dr Mehta has also directed the police chiefs to trace the origin of country- made revolvers, which are being widely used by criminals in the region. On the pattern of Uttar Pradesh, the criminals of Haryana have also started using country-made revolvers for committing not only heinous crimes but also petty crimes, said Dr Mehta. She told ‘The Tribune’ that investigation into the matter had revealed that these country-made revolvers were being smuggled into Haryana from bordering Uttar Pradesh. During the last one month, the Gurgaon police had seized more than twelve country-made revolvers from criminals, said a police officer. The IGP stressed the need for result-oriented investigation and directed the SSPs to report to her on regular basis. |
Gang involved in human trafficking busted, one held
New Delhi, June 22 The police said that with the help of some travel agents based in Hong Kong and Bangkok, the accused used to send people to these countries on genuine documents. Later, they were sent to other countries on fake visas. The racket came to light after some victims, Balvinder Singh, Satnam Singh and Gurpal Singh, brought the racked to the notice of the police. The accused Surinder Singh Bhardwaj accompanied them to Bangkok on March 31 by Thai Airways. From there, he arranged fake visas to China through one Ching Pai, a native of Thailand. They were apprehended by the authorities and deported back to IGI Airport on May 3. During interrogation, they revealed the names of the travel agents involved in the racket. The police said that Virender Arora was involved in human trafficking for the last two years. He was running his office ‘New Global Consultant’ at Mani Majra, Chandigarh. The police have arrested Virender, while the other two accused are still at large.

Three held by CBI in murder case
New Delhi, June 22 The suspects were identified as Gurcharan Sharma, alias Radhey, Kapil Dev, alias Sunil and Vijay. All the suspects are residents of Gurgaon. The suspects were produced before the CBI court at Ambala and remanded to 7 days police custody. The suspects were involved in hijacking a truck and murdering its driver Naresh Kumar and its cleaner Azad Singh and looting of electronic items like DVD spare parts, speakers, remotes worth Rs 15 lakh in 2002, said a CBI spokesman. The spokesman said that the truck belonged to one Jai Prakash. It had left for Bangalore on September 2, 2002 with goods for Hero Honda company, DVD parts, speakers and remotes worth Rs 15 lakh for Shiv Enterprises. The truck reached Sidhrawali on September 11 and delivered one consignment of goods at the Hero Honda godown at Dharuhera in Haryana. However, after it took petrol from a petrol pump at Bilaspur Chowk, it was found abandoned in empty condition near Ahir College in Rewari. There was no sign of driver Naresh Kumar and cleaner Azad Singh. On September17, 2002 a case of misappropriation of electronic goods was registered in Rewari on the basis of a complaint of Anoop Khurana, manager of Vijay Cargo Movers Limited that the driver and the cleaner of the truck had misappropriated the electronic goods. The CBI was handed over the case by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to investigate it after Mrs Rajesh Rani, wife of the truck driver, filed a Criminal Miscellaneous Petition in 2004. While tracing possible dealers of stolen goods in Delhi, the CBI finally picked up Gurcharan Sharma, alias Radhey and questioned him. During sustained questioning, he confessed his involvement in the case and disclosed the names of others involved in the loot. |
Hike in city power tariff imminent
New Delhi, June 22 “We are finalising the calculations and may announce new tariffs most probably this Friday or Monday.’’ He said the different power distribution companies had in their submissions to the DERC shown a revenue gap of over Rs 500 crore each and the Transco had put its gap at Rs 1,582 crore, with the cumulative difference coming to Rs 3,000 crore. Mr Venugopal said that the power companies wanted a steep hike in the tariffs to the tune of 60 per cent, but the DERC was not going to burden Delhiites to that extent. Earlier, the Delhi Power Minister, Mr Haroon Yusuf, had said people in the Capital would have to pay more for electricity from July 1. The power rates in the Capital have already been increased three times in the post privatisation era. |
Faridabad continues to reel under power crisis despite public outcry
Faridabad, June 22 With the residents forced to spend restless days and sleepless nights, the crisis has invited sharp criticism from various quarters, including political leaders who have even demanded the resignation of the present Congress government for its ‘failure’ to ensure proper supply of power and water. The poor supply of power has also affected the availability of water in the city. The city’s residents have had to sacrifice their sleep and rest during the past several nights due to erratic power supply. ‘The cuts are longer than the supply, forcing one to spend sleepless nights,’ complained Dr. Tarun, a resident of sector 9. He said there was either no response from the complaint centre or it simply failed to deliver accurate information and results. He said the power supply duration was hardly more than 6 to 8 hours, despite the claims of the authorities. Hundreds of complaints were lodged at various DHBVNL complaint centres last night due to continuous cuts from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. this morning in many parts of the town. In many parts of the city, low voltage and sharp fluctuations made the situation equally miserable for residents. The ‘Bijli Suvidha Kendra’, a centralised complaint centre set by the DHBVNL to register and monitor consumer complaints at sector 23 has also come under sharp attack for poor performance. The DHBVNL has reportedly given this on contract to a private company against a payment of about Rs 80,000 per month. Residents say that it’s helpline numbers are either always engaged or no action is taken on complaints lodged with it. Meanwhile, local BJP and the INLD leaders have issued statements lambasting the state government for the ongoing power crisis in the district. Mr Moolchand Sharma, a local INLD leader, said the poor supply of power and water had become one of the main ‘achievements’ of the Hooda government in the past 100 days of power. He said any government which fails to ensure supply of basic necessities like power and water had no moral right to remain in power. Local BJP leader Mr Krishan Pal Gurjar also condemned the power crisis and blasted the state government for its failure to address the issue. |
HUDA demolishes bogus ‘public utility service’ booths in Gurgaon
Gurgaon, June 22 Some hoardings have been demolished by the department, confirmed Mr Anurag Aggarwal, Administrator, HUDA, Gurgaon. However, the department had failed to demolish the police vehicle shelters and a number of large hoardings, particularly on the MG Road, that have been installed by the advertisement agencies. According to a survey conducted by the HUDA, there are 49 large hoardings on MG Road alone, where prominent malls are operational in the city. Mr Aggarwal clarified that following the cancellation of the agreements with advertisement agencies, some of them have taken stay orders from the court. Mr Aggarwal did not rule out the involvement of some staff members of HUDA in the racket
as some of the important files were found missing from the office when the scam came to light some days back. The department had approached the court for early hearing of the court cases for vacating the stay orders, said Mr Aggarwal. |
Rape-accused principal’s bail plea rejected
New Delhi, June 22 “To be fair to the magistrate, he decided this issue straightaway and, I may add, correctly by holding that the subsequently filed charge-sheet would not cure the defect,’’ said the Judge in a 30-page order. The magistrate had held that the 90-day period was applicable and therefore the charge-sheet was in time. The police had filed a charge-sheet on May 12, 2005, the 55th day of the arrest of the accused. Prime accused Sharma had then filed an application seeking bail on the ground that the charge-sheet was not filed within the stipulated 60 days. A teenaged girl from Samaipur Badli was allegedly gang raped by a principal and a vice-principal of two government schools and two of their associates on February 17, 2005. The 16-year-old girl, who had dropped out of school in Class eight, had enrolled for matriculation examination as a private candidate and was taking tuitions from Sharma. On the fateful day, the accused allegedly told the girl that he could arrange a matriculation certificate for her and took her to Ved Prakash Sharma (52), vice-principal of Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya in Raghuvir Nagar. The two then took her to a PWD guest house in Badli area where they were joined by two businessmen, Om Prakash (35) and Jagdish (42), and allegedly raped the girl repeatedly at knife-point. They later dropped her near her house the next morning after warning her not to tell anyone about the incident. But the girl’s family registered a police complaint. The accused were arrested after a medical examination of the girl confirmed rape. |

New Delhi, June 22 The teams will personally visit different areas of Delhi and inspect whether sewers and drains have been cleaned properly to avoid problems like waterlogging during the rainy season. “By the end of this month, I will personally visit the areas to inspect whether the civic agencies have done their job properly,” Minister of Urban Development Dr A K Walia said. Forum orders refund of fee to student
New Delhi, June 22 Rejecting the argument of the Guru Gobind Singh IP University and Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Technology, affiliated to it, that the money could not be returned as the student was provisionally admitted to the B.Tech course, the consumer disputes forum (North) ruled that “such admissions become permanent only if eligibility criteria is fulfilled.” “The Institute is not justified in forfeiting the entire amount as the seat that had fallen vacant could be given to the next waiting student on payment of fees,” the forum headed by president K. K. Chopra said, ordering the University to refund the entire fee. Asking the Institute to refund the security deposit of Rs 5,000, the court also ordered a compensation of Rs 5,000 for the student for the “undue harassment and mental agony” caused to her on this account. Prem Deep Kaur had applied for admission to the college against paid seats and deposited Rs 65,000 for admission. Later, she found out that she had to reappear in one of the subjects of the qualifying Diploma in Computer Engineering and had thus become ineligible for admission. Kaur, who had to withdraw her admission application, then sought a refund from the University. But the University cancelled her admission and refunded only the examination fee of Rs 2,500, forfeiting the tuition fee of Rs 58,000 and security deposit. |
IIFT programme to sensitise students to
social realities
