BAN SOUGHT: The Amritsar Vikas Manch on Tuesday demanded a ban on the burning of garbage and tree leaves in the city. In a letter to Mr Kulbir Singh Kang, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, president of the manch, said safai karamcharis were burning the waste near trees which resulted in their untimely death. He alleged that the green belt along city roads was being destroyed by the safai karamcharis .

INSTALLED: A Photograph of Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Thekedar was installed at Sikh Museum in the Golden Temple Complex here on Tuesday. Bibi Jagir Kaur, President, SGPC, installed the photograph.

APPEALED: Residents of Gali Gungi Aharta in Prem Nagar here have appealed to the Deputy Commissioner, Gurdaspur, to order the removal and shifting of pesticides godown from the area. They alleged that dangerous pesticides were stored in the godown which posed a threat to the health of the residents of the locality.

KILLED: Vinod Kumar, a schoolteacher, was killed when truck hit and threw him on the road and a mini bus crushed him to death. The driver of the truck has absconded.

Hoshiarpur
EIGHT INJURED: Eight passengers were wounded when their bus of City Line Tourist, Delhi, (DL-1PA-3834) overturned near Uchhi Bassi turn around noon on Wednesday on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway. According to police sources, all the injured passengers were admitted to the Civil Hospital, Dasuya. The bus passengers were coming from Delhi and going to the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi.

LAUNCHED: The Pathankot Vikas Manch, a social organisation, on Tuesday launched a free drinking water service for the city residents. The manch arranged a hand-driven cart fitted with the water pooling machine.

LOAN MELA: A loan mela was organised at Nadampur branch of the State Bank of Patiala (SBOP) where loans of more than Rs 50 lakh were distributed to the farmers. Mr V.K. Kocchar, AGM, SBOP, presided over the function. Mr Rakesh Lata Gupta, branch manager, also spoke on the occasion and assured the gathering of providing best customer service.

SCHEME FOR GIRLS: The Haryana Government has increased the money given to the girls from families living below the poverty line from Rs 5,100 to Rs 15,000 under the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Vivaha Shagun Yojana. Deputy Commissioner Brijendra Singh said the government had also initiated a ‘laadli scheme’ to check female foeticide in which Rs 5,000 will be given to the mother and daughter in case of birth of a second girl child.

SEMINAR: The Sports and Youth Welfare department is organising a two-day seminar on ‘Total awareness campaign on HIV/ AIDS’ from June 23. Mr V.S. Kundu, Director Sports, said youth cultural coordinators and representatives of youth clubs would participate in the seminar.

DELIVERY HUTS: As many as 300 delivery huts will be set up throughout the state. Mobile delivery vans will also be made available at the community health centres as well as the primary health centres to help expecting mothers in the rural areas of the state. This information was given by the Haryana Health Minister, Mrs Kartari Devi, here on Sunday.

PROBE INITIATED: A vigilance inquiry has been initiated against a former Chairman and four trustees of the Yamunanagar Improvement Trust for waiving of an interest amount of about Rs 8 lakh of the local Guru Nanak Khalsa College. Interestingly, they had refused to waive an interest amount of Rs 50 lakh of Mukand Lal National College during the same period.

ELECTED: Mr Shyam Singh has been elected Chairman of the Chhachhrouli Block Samiti and Ms Mithlesh the Chairperson of Mustfabad Block Samiti. Ms Mariyam has been elected Deputy Chairperson.

FOUND DEAD: Bastian Karnelise Akednekemp of Holland, who was an undertrial prisoner at government open air jail at Kothipura was found dead on Tuesday.

CAMPAIGN: Bilaspur Sadar MLA Tilakraj Sharma has criticised BJP leaders for starting disinformation regarding the paucity of drinking water in some areas of Bilaspur district.

SANCTIONED: The Himachal Forest, Youth Services and Sports Minister, Mr Ramlal Thakur said here on Tuesday that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 1.43 crore for Gobind Sagar Ghats Development Project. The first instalment of Rs 20.50 lakh had already been released.

ASI NABBED : An absconding ASI who had helped a Japanese wanted in a charas smuggling case flee the country, was arrested on Tuesday. A case under section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 120B, 212-213 and 201 of the IPC has been registered.
