Nothing healthy about bottled water: expert
Hisar, May 26 Many companies have come up with several variants like oxygenated water, alkaline water, ionised water, mineral water, and so on. Such high-sounding and seemingly impressive nomenclature lures the people into buying these products. However, experts maintain that the “enriched” water is not beneficial to human health, as claimed by these companies. “People in general are tempted to buy such products, without realising the hollowness of the claims made by these companies,” observes Prof Kuldip Singh Dhindsa of the Department of Chemistry at Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) here. Talking to The Tribune today, Professor Dhindsa, who is a former Dean of the College of Basic Sciences at HAU, apart from being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, London, asserts that such types of bottled water hardly provide any health benefits. For instance, oxygenated water is being offered by a number of companies, which mainly target sportsmen. The bottled oxygenated water contains about 40 mg oxygen per litre, which is much more than the normal level of oxygen’s solubility in water. “Evidently, the oxygen content is increased by pressurising water with oxygen. However, the extra oxygen escapes to the atmosphere as soon as the bottle is opened. Even the oxygen left in the water cannot be utilised by us as the human lungs, unlike gills in fish, are not capable of extracting dissolved oxygen in water,” maintains the senior scientist, who is a visiting Professor with US and German universities. Professor Dhindsa asserts that many companies offering alkaline and ionised water are also trying to take consumers for a ride by making unscientific claims. “Companies marketing ionised water claim that their water is ionised, and therefore, healthier. However, as a matter of fact, the salt content of potable water is so low that the process of electrolysis cannot produce sufficient concentration of ions,” he says. The expert says that the acidic pH of our stomach cannot be balanced effectively by consuming one litre of alkaline water. “The Acidic pH is required for proper digestion and other metabolic processes. Still, in case of need, milk of magnesia or simple cold milk can balance the pH factor,” he maintains. |

Cong leader denies poll code violation
Rohtak, May 26 In a press release issued here he said the INLD leader had made a sweeping statement but cited no specific instances of the violation because “there were none”. Denying any misuse of the government machinery he said the Chief Minister had directed the entire government machinery to stay away from the constituency till the election process was over. He said to set an example the Chief Minister had also decided not to visit the constituency before the polling day to cast his own vote. No other Chief Minister had ever done so in the past. As against this there had been widespread complaints of irregularities when the elections were held with Om Parkash Chautala at the helm of affairs and the Election Commission had to bar him from visiting the affected constituencies. Mr Hooda said the INLD leadership had lost the sense of balance while levelling such “wild and baseless allegations”. |
Mining banned in Deogarh, Balewala zone
Yamunanagar, May 26 There have been reports that certain mine contractors had dug the earth more than 40 feet deep against the permitted 10 feet to take out sand, gravel and stones. Illegal mining in the area was believed to be one of the reasons behind the breach in the Western Yamuna Canal last year. Dozens of deep pits dug using earthmoving machines have created a fear of flooding in several villages of the area. Illegal mining along the Jagadhri- Paonta Sahib stretch of the national highway also threatens the existence of the road. Sources said illegal mining in the Yamuna area had also affected the river creek. About 125 stone crushers in the area remained closed today, as there was no supply of stones. With stoppage of work in the crushers, hundreds of tractor-trailer owners and thousands of daily wage migrant labourers lost employment. The stone crushers that have been closed down following the orders are located in the areas of Belgarh, Hoiwala, Kohliwala, Bhurmajra, Balewala and Mandewala villages. Besides digging below the permitted limit in Chuharpur Kalana, Gulabgarh and Malikpur villages has also been banned. The Sources said the district mining officer, Mr Naresh Sharma, along with police force visited the areas and banned the The department has also asked the owners of about 20 earthmoving machines to remove the machines from the Yamuna river area immediately. |

NRI struggles to get house vacated
Karnal, May 26 The police had formally lodged the complaint of the NRI, Mr Vaishno Dass Sharma, against the illegal occupant Mr Biswa Dutt Sharma on May 19. But even after one week no action has been taken in this regard. Talking to The Tribune, Mr Sharma said he had purchased house number 62 situated in Jernailly Colony, Karnal, from his father-in-law in the year 1979 (vide registered deed No. 5681/1 dated December 20, 1979). Mr B.D. Sharma used to collect rent of the house from the tenants as the local caretaker. Knowing the fact that Mr V.D. Sharma was settled in the UK and used to come to India after long gaps, Mr B.D. Sharma illegally took possession of the house without any prior information or permission of the owner and illegally occupied it sometime in the year 2001, said the NRI. When the NRI returned and visited his house on February 25, 2005, he was surprised to find that Mr B.D. Sharma was himself living in the house. Instead of vacating the house, the illegal occupant, on the basis of forged documents, filed a complaint in a local court to get stay of possession. But the application of the plaintiff was rejected by the court. The illegal occupant had earlier, in connivance with the local SDO of the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN), had managed to get a second electricity meter (no. LC 36/2003) installed on the premises of the house on January 2, 2003. Later, on January 27, 2003 the illegal occupant wrote an application to the SDO, UHBVN, forging the signatures of the NRI’s father-in-law, asking it to remove the old meter (no. LC 36/1030). However, Mr Dwarka Nath, father-in-law of Mr V.D. Sharma, had expired in 1988. The SDO and JE concerned of the UHBVN at that time had also conducted a physical verification of the house before recommending the lineman to disconnect the electricity meter. The NRI has, in his complaint, alleged that the officials of the UHBVN were also hand in glove with the illegal occupant and demanded action against them. The NRI had also met the local District Magistrate, Mr Shyamal Mishra, seeking help but the latter refused to extend any help saying it was his personal matter. The Tribune tried to contact the District Magistrate for his version but he was not available in his office throughout the day. |
