Mr Hooda began practicing as advocate in 1968 and has remained Chairman of Bar Council of a Punjab and Haryana from 1988-90, a member of the Bar Council from 1975-96 and President of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association for three terms - 1993-94, 1994-95 and 2000-2001.

PNB employees observe one-day strike
Tribune News Service

Hisar, March 7
On a call given by the All-India Bank Employees Association and the Punjab National Bank Employees Union, the employees of the PNB branches across the district observed a strike today.

The financial transactions were affected and customers had to face inconvenience as they had no idea about the bank employees going on a strike.

Mr Balbir Singh Sibia, vice-president of the Haryana chapter of the PNB Employees Union, said the nationwide strike had been called against the decision to reduce the government equity in the bank by offering 74 per cent share to the private sector.

He said it was irony that on the one hand, the Union Government claimed that it was not encouraging disinvestment in the banking sector, while on the other hand, it was floating shares of the bank.

Mr Sibia, who is also the chairman of the Haryana Bank Employees Federation, asserted that their union was opposed to the move of privatising the bank and today’s strike was a means to register their protest.

However, another PNB employees’ body, the All-India Punjab National Bank Workers Federation, did not participate in the strike. In a statement issued here today, Mr J.K. Sawhney, general secretary of the federation, maintained that the strike was politically motivated. The federation asked its members to perform their duties as usual without any fear.

This direction was given by Mr Justice Virender Singh while disposing of a petition filed by Mr Ranga, who is under suspension, seeking expeditious trial in the case against him.

He also said though the charge-sheet against him was submitted in the CBI court in 2001, only 21 out of 200-odd witnesses had recorded their statement.

He stated in the past two years, not a single witness had been examined. Saying that he was due to retire in July, 2008, the petitioner also stated that in view of the slow pace of trial, the case might take many more years to complete
