Ram Babu holds the reins, denies rift with CM
New Delhi, November 8 “All sections of the society will be given due representation in the DPCC and their interests will also be protected. The political character of the DPCC shall be transparent and the party would protect the interests of the citizens,” he said. Stressing on greater co-ordination between the party and the government, Mr Sharma said the practice of weekly meetings between the ministers and the committee will be revived. “The weekly meetings will allow us at DPCC to brief the ministers about the problems of the people and improve co-ordination between the party and the government,” he said. He denied there were any differences in the local unit of the party and declared complete co-operation to the Sheila Dikshit government. He also downplayed suggestions that there was friction between him and the Chief Minister saying, “Both of us follow the directions of the Congress High Command. Where does the question of having disputes arise?” Fifty-one-year-old Sharma, who has risen through the party ranks en route to the DPCC president’s post, took over amid a lot of fanfare with a huge crowd witnessing the function. Slogans like “Sonia Gandhi Zindabad” and “Ram Babu Sharma Zindabad” rent the air as jubilant supporters of the newly appointed DPCC president and party workers gathered at the office of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee. Speaker Prem Singh, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, her Cabinet colleagues, Members of Parliament from Delhi, councillors, and representatives and office-bearers of All India Congress Committee (AICC) were present on the occasion. Member of Parliament Sajjan Kumar moved a resolution, which was unanimously adopted, thanking Congress president Sonia Gandhi for appointing Ram Babu Sharma as president of DPCC. A general secretary of All India Congress Committee, Mr Janardhan Dwivedi, said, “The time has come when all of us should sink our differences”. He praised Ms Gandhi for making a grassroot worker like Ram Babu Sharma the president of the DPCC. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, in turn, said that her Council of Ministers would extend support and co-operation to the new president and take the sentiments of the party worker into consideration while formulating programmes and policies for Delhi. |
The red flag over JNU: Nothing ideological about it
Raghubansh Sinha Tribune News Service
New Delhi, November 8 Even if such a corollary is dismissed outright, it is certainly interesting to understand why the present generation of students on the JNU campus continues to support the Left forces as strongly as in the years past, despite the fact that the socio-economic forces in and around the campus have undergone dramatic transformations. It is intriguing to many that the Left parties have maintained their hold over JNU politics even though the number of students from the deprived sections of the Indian society, who often form the base of the Left activism, has considerably declined on the campus. Even as signs of aberrations in the form of electoral disturbances and violence have surfaced in recent years, the election process in JNU is an island of sanity in a world full of scepticism at the deteriorating standard of democratic process in and around us, a senior professor remarked. No doubt, a trend towards depoliticisation of the campus has been evident in the last decade with the “Me and Now Generation” making its presence felt. However, the election code of conduct, heavily biased against the use of money and muscle power, is followed both in letter and spirit, and the authority of the all-student election committee has not been challenged, as it has been able to conduct free and fair elections over the years. In effect, the election environment on the campus continues to resemble the swinging sixties and the early seventies when Leftism was the flavour on university campuses around the world. The students at JNU come from diverse region and with varied background, yet the campus life acts as a great leveller. It is a tribute to the JNU culture that students from different social strata are the activists for the Left cause on the campus. However, it is not always the Marxist ideology that attracts the new converts, but often the idealism of showing concern for people and issues that may have little relevance to their own future career. Even though they may have no affiliation with the Left organisations or sympathy for the revolutionary ideology, it is often intoxicating for the youths, fed up with the crass materialism existing outside the campus. Not surprisingly, the winning presidential candidates of the radical Left AISA managed to garner a large chunk of the fence sitters, who in all probability would have little sympathy for the revolutionary call. The fact that the radical Left AISA managed to rope in an American, Tyler Walker William, as one of its candidates, clearly exemplifies the non-ideological nature of its support base on the campus. To many, the Left activism has given a certain character to the life on the campus, which is associated with tolerance for different shades of opinion—symbolised in the culture of debate and discussion—highlighting national and international issues of social concern and generally making the discourse on the campus intellectually vibrant. Clearly, the Left formations have had a major say in creating such an environment and maintaining it over the years. In effect, the continuing hold of the Left over JNU politics is a determined message of the majority that they want the campus to stay that way. |
20 dacoits strike in Loni trader’s house
Loni (Ghaziabad), November 8 The police were informed of the loot and attack. The injured were rushed to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Delhi, after the assailants had left. The dacoits had even taken jewellery worn by the ladies in the house. The residents of the area were shocked as the police turned up only after an hour of being informed and even then they registered a simple theft case instead of a dacoity. Having noticed the police approach, the residents of Vikas Nagar Colony had resolved to patrol the colony at night. Harun, Attar Singh, Mohan Ram, Seeta Ram Siddiqqui, Vijay Pal Singh and others were patrolling at the time when the dacoits struck. Harun, injured in the head, was rushed to Delhi’s SGTB Hospital. Soon after the incident, some armed dacoits had scaled the boundary wall of Pandit Ram Kishen’s house in the colony and took away Rs 30,000 from the almirah along with other valuables from one room. Similarly cash, jewellery and valuables from the almirahs of adjoining rooms were also taken away. Ram Kishen and his wife Shanti were seriously wounded when they tried to resist the dacoity. They were locked up in a room along with their son Raju. The intruders then forcibly went into the room of Ram Kishen’s other son Sanjay and snatched the jewellery that his wife Kavita was wearing at gun-point. The jewellery included gold ear tops, rings, chains, bangles and anklets. Sanjay and his wife were also beaten up and huddled into a corner. The steel almirah in this room was broken open and the desperados looted all cash, gold and other valuables. The dacoits then took 1 kg gold and 2 kg silver jewellery apart from cash and saris worth Rs 50,000 after breaking open the steel almirah in Shanti Devi’s bedroom. The intruders then looted desi ghee, cigarettes, soap, shampoos, etc worth Rs 50,000 from the shop in a room of the house. In more than two hours of stay in the house, the criminals had reportedly decamped with over Rs 1 lakh, jewellery worth Rs 6.50 lakh and other valuables from the shop. The incidents of loot have increased during the last two months in Loni. The residents are finding it quite hard to defend their life and homes as the dacoits seem to be striking the area at will. |
CM gives quite a few sops to Gurgaon
Gurgaon, November 8 Many, however, wondered how the development projects announced would be completed when the present government had just about three months at its disposal. Presiding over the final leg of his government’s “Aap ke saarkar aap ke dwaar” programme for this Assembly segment, Mr Chautala did not disappoint any of the 31 village panchayats and residents of the city, who approached him for the redressal of their grievances. He also ordered that all encroachments on the government and semi-government land be removed forthwith. Addressing a gathering on the occasion, he said that any village that deposited Rs 33,000, the government would provide an additional Rs 2.5 lakhs for setting up an Anganwadi centre in it. Besides, any village that deposited Rs 75,000 would make the government spend about Rs 2 lakh for setting up a stadium in it. He said that all the iron electricity poles would be replaced by concrete cement poles and the poles that fell on the wayside of residences, hospitals, schools and public places would be removed to avoid a possible mishap. According to him, any village that fulfilled the norms would be entitled for upgradation of its schools. Also, the sewerage and drinking water system in the villages would be strengthened. New Delhi, November 8 Speaking at a protest meet organised to condemn the recent hike in petroleum products, Marxist leaders said the people voted out Vajpayee government because of its “pro-rich policies”. It was now compelling the CPI(M) to take a stand against similar policies of the present government at the Centre, they said. They said the party’s support could not be taken for granted as it was “not unconditional and out of compulsion”.
