SC slams govt over abattoir construction
New Delhi, November 5 A Bench of Justices N Santosh Hegde and S. B. Sinha issued the summoning order to the Centre on an application seeking relocation of the abattoir from Ghazipur to some other safer site as it would be a threat to the Hindon Air Base. The court castigated the Centre and the Delhi Government for not taking a firm decision on the issue saying the political leadership was busy “appeasing the voters”. “What were you doing all these years,” the Bench asked Additional Solicitor General Amarendra Sharan. “You come to the court when you have a problem and when we issue necessary directions, you fail to implement them on some pretext,” the Bench observed. The court said that in case the abattoir was to be shifted from Ghazipur, the Centre and the Delhi Government would have to pay to the Delhi Municipal Corporation the entire amount it had spent so far in setting up the new abattoir. The abattoir is presently located at Idgah in the congested Walled City. Its shifting was ordered more than a decade ago by a Bench headed by Justice Kuldeep Singh by allowing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the issue. Originally it was to be relocated at the outskirts of West Delhi but in view of an agitation by the people of the area, its location was shifted to Ghazipur in East Delhi.
Khurana meets Azad
on regularisation of industries
The former Governor of Rajasthan, Mr Madan Lal Khurana and Mr Sahib Singh Verma today called on the Union Urban Development Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, to place their demands for regularisation of industries and unauthorised colonies in Delhi. The former Member of Parliament, Mr Lal Bihari Tiwari, the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Mr S. P. Ratawal, Mr H. S. Balli, Mr Kulwant Rana, Mr Karan Singh Tanwar, Mr Dayanand Chandela and Mr Subhash Sachdeva (all MLAs) and Mr Jagdish Mamgain accompanied Mr Khurana. They opposed the affidavit filed by the Delhi Government on November 1. The affidavit, they claimed, did not talk about changing the Master Plan or regularisation of industries. “This is backstabbing and it will not be tolerated,” they said. They demanded that a fresh affidavit be filed in the Supreme Court by the Union Government stating regularisation of all existing industrial clusters having 70 per cent industries and a change in the Master Plan. |
JNU remains awake to another night of close watch
New Delhi, November 5 “First the polling began late, then the polling concluded late, the consequence of which is that the counting got delayed and we have been up since last night waiting to hear the results,” complained Tauseef of the NSUI. While the results announcing the names of the Councilors from the various schools were trickling in throughout the day… anticipation and anxiety mounted with each passing minute as one eagerly awaited the results to the central panel. The extra day also meant an opportune time for the would-be psephologists to put forth their readings, leading to hours of animation and discussions. The fact that all the four women candidates in the fray were leading till the end of the first phase of counting gave ample reason for some to believe that it could be an all women’s panel this year. “A little over 3,000 students have voted this time and till the time they had counted about one third of the votes, Mona Das of the AISA was leading for the post of the President, SFI-AISF’s Ena Panda was leading for the post of Vice-President, NSUI’s Priti Rekha was leading for the post of the General- Secretary and Shona Mitra of the SFI-AISF was leading for the post of Joint- Secretary,” said a source. Kanika Singh supported by AISA and Esther Sukriti of the SFI, were elected as students’ representatives to the GSCASH. Having lost the elections to the GSCASH, Maruf Hussain, however, was on an euphoric note for being chosen as the President of the Tapti Hostel for the third consecutive year. “It is a big honour and probably the first time ever that someone has been selected for three years in a row,” he said. In the School of Social Sciences, the SFI won three posts while AISA managed two. Both of them also bagged one post each in the School of International Studies. The NSUI won two posts in the School of Life Sciences and a candidate supported by them won a seat in the School of Computer Science. The ABVP won two seats in the School of Computer Science and was leading in two seats in the School of Languages. And as supporters of each party kept their fingers crossed… JNU remained awake to another night of close watch. |
BJP dharna against hike in prices of petro products
Faridabad, November 5 On the other hand, the BJP which is in opposition now, has found a ground to criticise both the UPA government and the Chautala rule on these issues. The local BJP leaders held a dharna and demonstration today at the district level. According to a local leader, the party will demonstrate outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on November 8, in protest against the hike in the prices of petrol, diesel and the cooking gas. Criticising the hike, he said that this move was a ‘shocking gift’ to the people on the eve of Divali. It is claimed that the hike in the petro products, especially the diesel will have a sharp cascading effect on the overall economy and nearly every product could become costly affecting the average citizen. The party has demanded an immediate withdrawal of the hike. The party has also demanded measures to do away the shortage of the fertiliser, especially the DAP one, which was required at the sowing of the rabi crops. It is reported that while the DAP was available in the black market with a premium of Rs 35 to 85 per bag, it was not being made available through the government agencies. The official rate of this fertiliser had been Rs 467.50 per bag. While the district administration is still to come out with its version on the situation, reports of the shortage of the DAP and the cooking gas supply have been reported from the various parts in the town and the district. The Congress leaders of the district also met here today to discuss the arrangements regarding the party’s district level rally here on November 21. The party leaders, including Mr Karan Singh Dalal criticised the ‘shortage’ of the DAP and linked it to a major racket involving the official machinery. |
SUCI protest against price hike
New Delhi, November 5 The Shiv Sena also threatened to heighten their protest should the UPA government fail to take back their “anti-people” decisions. |

Impostor installs fake power meters
Loni (Ghaziabad), November 5 After investigating the matter, the electrical engineers surprisingly penalised the consumers for power thefts instead of taking action against the contractor’s men. Meters were found to have been installed on five premises. The junior engineers of UPPC had filed a case of cheating against Lal Bagh residents: Jatinder Kumar, Dhiraj Singh Negi, Charu Singh and Bhagwati Prasad in whose houses the bogus meters were found. The Loni UPPC office had appointed Pankaj Varma last year as a contractor for meter reading, but he started checking the meters on his own. He promised some consumers to get their meters replaced for which he had allegedly collected Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 each. Hundreds of meters have been changed in the colony, according to the residents. However, UPPC executive engineer
R.C. Sharma alleges that people had connived with the contractor to get their meters changed. Meters of only those consumers have been changed whose bill payments were pending, Mr Sharma said. He added that the consumers would be penalised since they were also to be blamed. But no case has been registered against the contractor, the residents allege.

Computerisation in govt depts by end of fiscal
New Delhi, November 5 Mr Reghunathan said 450 schools had been provided with fully equipped computer laboratories. The government department, which is being
computerised, will use online modules and also Wide Area Networking (WAN) for better coordination. This will help improve various services and civic amenities as well as facilitate access to all government records at the click of a mouse, he said. Patwari held for giving wrong report
New Delhi, November 5 According to the spokesman of the Anti-Corruption Branch, Sangeeta Uttam, a woman filed an application before the SDM for getting a certificate of Scheduled Caste. The SDM directed Nawab Singh, the Patwari, to make an enquiry to find out whether the woman lives at the given address. Nawab Singh visited the residence of the woman and talked to her two neighbours. He saw the ration cards of two witnesses and noted down two names, Usha and Abdul. Thereafter, he demanded Rs 600 from one of the relatives of the Sangeeta. She gave only Rs 100 and refused to give more money. The Patwari allegedly wrote fabricated statement of Abdul and Usha that Sangeet did not live there and they did not know her. The SDM had rejected the application of Sangeeta after going through the report of Patwari. She appeared before the SDM personally to inform him that the report submitted by the Patwari was incorrect. She finally reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government. The sleuths of the branch made an enquiry of the case and found that Abdul had died a few years ago and it was a fabricated report. Thereafter, they arrested the Patwari. |
