One Pal Singh Thakur, Security Officer of another international airline, was to hand over to him a fake temporary pass in the name of Avtar Singh. The police said that the accused had all managed to do their bit until the random checking of passengers by the immigration officers. According to a senior official, “Jaskaran Singh was apprehended just before he was about to board the aircraft.” At the instance of Jaskaran Singh, the police arrested Charanjeet Singh and Saurabh Kumar from Jalandhar, who was running a travel agency. The police also arrested their accomplices Dr. Kamal and Manjeet Singh of Jalandhar. The police sources said that the travel agents were in cahoots with officials posted at the airport. Extra voting time in JNU results in squabbling
New Delhi, November 4 Which is perhaps why some party members failed to cast their votes by six in the evening and pressed the EC to stretch the polling hours to allow them to vote. By 5 pm, 65 percent turnout had been recorded. As was predictable, the other parties opposed this. The polling process nevertheless indicated a good turnout and while all the parties in the fray claimed to be “confident of winning,” the mood and the countenance of some had a different story to tell. The right claimed to be on an “upswing”, which was commendable they felt especially after the infighting in the last two years. And the NSUI, which is yet to make a mark, is also counting on winning a “good number of councilor posts as well as making it to the central panel”. If the mood was somber in the AISA -SFI camp, the AISF was more exuberant, even if it was limited to defending its choice of candidate for the councilor’s post in the School of Languages: the candidate is a US national, to which the ABVP has taken umbrage. “This is a troublesome question …If the foreign students have the right to cast their vote, they have the right to stand for elections as well. Tyler Walker’s candidature does not flout the JNU constitution and the ABVP too is supporting a councilor who is an American of India origin”, said an AISA functionary. The ABVP pointed out that it had to seek special administrative help to help some of its supporters cast votes. “In some schools, which are considered ABVP stronghold, most students found their names missing from the voting list. After getting the administration to attest their names, they finally managed to vote”, complained Dhananjay Singh. Apart from the elections to the central panel, students also cast their votes to choose their respective school councilors. Some students were delighted at the idea of foreign students participating the elections. “There is a students from Vietnam standing for councilor in the School of International Studies… It is nice, because they feel a part of the campus, feel involved, and it reflects the global temperament of the university”, said Gaurav, a student from the SIS. Though some students complained that JNUSU polls “are not what they used to be,” considering that there are not too many “intellectual discourses and debates on issues of international importance,’’ there were, however, no deterrents to keep them from voting. The counting for determining the fate of the contestants would begin later in night today and results would be declared here tomorrow. |
