Chautala re-affirms creation of new dist
Pinangua (Gurgaon), It was clear that, Mr Chautala, was trying to be one up on his ruling INLD opponents on the issue, especially when the Assembly elections were fast approaching. With the affirmative assertions he sought to dispel any misgivings in the minds of the local populace. Addressing a congregation in connection with his Iftar party for the public of Mewat, Mr Chautala, congratulated the people of the area for the new district. The Delimitation Commission has raised objection to the creation of the district at this juncture when the process of delimitation of constituencies is afoot. In fact, Mr Chautala
had, while announcing the creation of the district, said that the new district would become functional from November 1, the Haryana Day. But the commission’s negative stand put the government on the
backfoot. The Iftar party was hosted at the outskirts of this village that falls in the Nuh Assembly segment of the Mewat area. |
Kashmir won’t secede from
India: Farooq
Pinangua (Gurgaon), November 5 Dr Abdullah, who was here to attend an Iftar party hosted by Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, addressed a congregation on the occasion. Amidst applause from the gathering, he said even though Kashmir was dominated by Muslims, it would not secede from the country. He said it was imperative that both India and Pakistan had friendly relations with each other so that both could
prosper. Kashmir would not be a roadblock to the building of friendly relations. Dr Abdullah urged the people of the state,
especially Mewat, to vote for the ruling INLD in the coming Assembly elections in the state. Championing the cause of the INLD government, he said Mr Chautala was trying to provide justice to every section of society. He also lauded Mr Chautala for fulfilling the demand of a separate district for the areas of Mewat. |
Two Haryana MLAs disqualified
Chandigarh, November 5 Mr Nafe Singh
Rathee, INLD MLA from Bahadurgarh, had filed a petition seeking the disqualification of the two Independent MLAs after they withdrew support from the ruling party and extended it to the Congress before the Rajya Sabha elections from the state. Mr Rathee alleged that these MLAs had joined the Congress against the provisions of the anti-defection law. However, the two MLAs had maintained that they had only extended their support to the Congress and had not joined it. Hence, they said, they had not violated the anti-defection law. Mr Rathee presented before the Speaker CDs of interviews given by these MLAs to the electronic media in which they had talked of joining the Congress. |
Cong MPs meet Sonia
Chandigarh, November 5 The MPs who met, Ms Gandhi, were, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, former Haryana Congress president, the Union Minister of State, Ms Selja, Mr Navin Jindal, MP from Kurukshetra, and Mr Avtar Singh Badhana, MP from Faridabad. Interestingly, all five leaders are known to be anti-Bhajan Lal. A member of the delegation described the meeting as a courtesy call. The meeting lasted about 25 minutes. It is believed that the delegation told Ms Gandhi about the strategy the party should adopt for contesting the next Assembly elections in Haryana. They also reportedly briefed her about the meeting of senior party leaders convened by the AICC general secretary in charge of Haryana, Mr Janardan Dwivedy, in Delhi on November 3. |
SC restrains CBI from arresting ex-Primary
Education Director
New Delhi, November 5 The direction was issued by a Bench of Chief Justice S.B. Sinha, Mr Justice D.M. Dharmadhikari and Mr Justice G.P. Mathur while hearing a CBI plea for transferring Mr Sanjiv Kumar’s petition from the Delhi High Court to the apex court, in which he had alleged that a senior investigating officer of the agency had demanded Rs 55 lakh from him to close the inquiry against him. Senior advocate Anil Diwan and Kamini Jaiswal, who appeared for the IAS officer, providing him legal aid for his alleged humiliation by Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and the state government for highlighting the JBT teachers appointment scam, told the court that Mr Sanjiv Kumar had submitted a 45-minute transcription of a tape-recorded conversation with the said CBI officer, who had allegedly demanded the money. The apex court, while accepting CBI’s plea for transfer of the matter from the high court, did not pass any order on Mr Sanjiv Kumar’s contempt petition against the Haryana Government even as his counsel sought notice to the state government. Mr Diwan said since three departmental inquiries against Mr Sanjiv Kumar on the same cases, which were being probed by the CBI, were handed over to Central Vigilence Commission (CVC) by the Court earlier, the Haryana Government should be restrained from taking any action on its own till the CVC inquiry was complete. The matter was adjourned for four weeks. The apex court had ordered a CBI inquiry against Sanjiv Kumar and Chautala last year to find out the truth in the JBT teachers appointment scam of 2002 as both of them had levelled charges and counter-charges against each other about the “tampering” of the recruitment list. |

Another couple seeks relief from khap
Jhajjar, November 5 The district administration has decided to intervene in their favour following the Punjab and Haryana High Court's directives in their case. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Mohinder Kumar, said today that a meeting of the Jondhi panchayat, prominent khap figures and the couple would be held tomorrow. He said the administration was bound to rehabilitate the couple in the village and action could be taken against those who tried to derail the process. Superintendent of Police Mohammad Akil is likely to preside over tomorrow's meeting. Darshna and Ashish were the victims of a Gahlawat khap panchayat diktat. The panchayat comprising 83 villages handed down the verdict in August 2000, not only directing them to annul their marriage but also ostracising them for life. The couple have been living in a Delhi suburb with their five-year-old child. Ashish Dagar of Jondhi village had married Darshna of Dabdi village in Delhi in 1998. Darshna belonged to the Gahlawat gotra. While Dagar families also live in Jondhi, it is a Gahlawat majority village. After the Sonia-Rampal episode, the couple decided to make a bid to return to their village. A social organisation came forward and made a public-interest litigation against the khap panchayat's verdict in the High Court three days ago. The court issued a notice to the district administration. The SHO, city, has visited Jondhi to assess the situation ahead of the rehabilitation efforts. Mr Akil also held discussions with the sarpanch of the village, Mr Balraj Singh, and other prominent khap figures. |

Hike in fuel prices flayed
Hisar, November 5 Addressing a press conference here today, Prof Sampat Singh said the costs of essential commodities as well as finished industrial products were escalating, whereas the prices of agricultural produce were falling. The UPA government had been unable to check the trend, he added. When asked what could the Centre do in the wake of the rising prices of crude oil in the international market, the minister maintained that the government could have rationalised the prices by providing some budgetary support. He said in a welfare state, the government should ensure that the consumer does not have to bear the brunt. Advocating the provision of subsidy, he said the government could not always go by the profit motive and it had to take decisions keeping the larger interest of the people in mind. Prof Sampat Singh remarked that the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, was under pressure from UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi as well as from the Communist parties. The INLD leader held the Centre responsible for the shortage and rising price of bricks. The brick-kiln owners have stopped production of bricks over an order to use fly ash. On being reminded that the order on fly ash had been passed by the court, Prof Sampat Singh maintained that the Centre had been unable to adopt a proper stance in the court in this regard. The minister lamented the fall in the price of cotton and put the entire blame on the Centre. He pointed out that cotton was a cash crop and decline in its price was a big blow to the farmers. Sonepat:
The BJP National Vice-President and MP, Mr Kishan Singh Sangwan, today condemned the unprecedented hike in the prices of LPG and other petroleum products. Talking to mediapersons here today, he said the Central Government has put the burden on the common man by increasing the prices of the LPG, petrol, and diesel and demanded immediate withdrawal of the hike. He warned that if it was not withdrawn, the party would have no alternative but to launch a nationwide agitation. Mr S.N. Solanki, secretary of the district committee of the CPI (M), Mr Howa Singh, vice-president of the Haryana Committee of the CITU, and Mr Hari Parkash, general secretary of the Haryana Committee of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI), also opposed the hike and blamed the UPA government for taking anti-people steps. Yamunanagar: The Haryana unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh has criticised the increase in prices of diesel and the LPG. The general secretary of the unit, Dr Shamsher Singh Tyagi, said in a press release issued here today that the UPA government had just made a symbolic raise in the price of wheat and a sharp increase in diesel and domestic cooking gas prices. He said the hike would adversely affect the farmers and urged the UPA government to withdraw the increase in petro prices. The district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Pary has also criticised the increase in the prices of the petroleum products. Mr Ghanshyam Dass, district president, BJP, has alleged that the allies in the UPA government were being manipulated by the Congress. |

On the other hand, the council president, Dr Yashvir Goel, maintained that his rivals could not get the support of the required number of councillors and hence the meeting was adjourned. Dr Goel alleged that State Urban Development Minister Subhash Goel even went to the house of several councillors to ask them to vote against him.
