Poll violence on
campus: A matter of concern for JNUites
New Delhi, November 6 The JNU campus has prided itself over the predominance of the colour red. Now, however, there are murmurs of disapproval. The red splashed on the foyer and the corridors of the School of Languages could pass off as the handiwork of an indifferent pan chewing population.

Left is right on JNU campus, 3 posts for women
New Delhi, November 6 Maintaining the Left’s position of a ruling front on the campus, Mona Das of AISA, polling 1077 votes, managed to rout her nearest rival Parimal of the SFI by 137 votes, while the NSUI’s M. Narasimhamurthy A first in the history of the JNU elections, three women have been elected to the central panel this year. Making a comeback after 1996, AISA’s victory is being attributed to the presidential candidate Mona’s ability to have made most of the SFI’s anti-incumbency factor. Despite having lost the presidential post, the AISF-SFI combine have managed to retain their hold on the remaining three posts of the central panel. Ena Panda with 1302 votes was elected Vice President, Muqbil Ahmar with 958 votes was declared General Secretary and Shona Mitra with 1315, was declared Joint Secretary. “Mona stood out for her ability to connect to the students and also to deliver her ideas. She managed to get the votes of even those who are otherwise not AISA sympathisers, but chose instead to vote for the candidate,” said a student. The NSUI, which was hopeful of gaining ground in this year’s elections, did not have much to speak about, what with their presidential candidate polling less than what their councilor polled in one of the schools. “The election results do not reflect NSUI’s true strength. A NSUI councilor has got more votes than Narasimhamurthy. Their defeat has been due to not just wrong choice of candidates, but also to bad management,” said a faculty member. It was also pointed out that the ABVP “failed to project itself as a party dedicated to the cause of the students, instead it was seen as an extremist voice on the campus”. But with the return of the ‘Lal Salaam brigade’, among the others things that the campus would witness is the resolution to what has now become a contentious issue, the Nestle kiosk selling coffee on the campus, which will in all probability have to shut shop. Moments after being declared the winner, Mona, who attributed her success to the party ideology, told mediapersons that the Nestle issue will be “settled soon”. |
Will DPCC chief clip CM’s wings?
New Delhi, November 6 Mr Sharma’s appointment to the post was announced by Congress General Secretary and Delhi affairs incharge Ashok Gehlot yesterday evening. “I will work to serve the people of Delhi and deliver what the party expects from me,” Mr Sharma said. With the Congress in power both at the Centre and in Delhi, he said, the party faces a big responsibility. “I will try to deliver,” he added. “I will try to fulfil the responsibility with utmost sincerity. It is a reflection of Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s faith in me and I will work to come up to her expectations,” Mr Sharma said, amidst shouting of slogans and distribution of sweets by his supporters. The post of the Delhi Congress chief was vacant since the appointment of Mr Prem Singh as the Delhi Assembly Speaker after the Assembly polls. However, he discounted the reports that delay in appointing the DPCC chief was due to any infighting among various contenders for the post. Mr Ram Babu Sharma is a well-known face in Delhi politics. Earlier, he held important posts in the MCD, including Leader of the House and the Chairman of the Standing Committee. He started his political career as a Youth Congress leader in Shyam Lal College. Later, he became Youth Congress President of trans-Yamuna area and then became District Congress Committee President of trans-Yamuna. |
Poll violence on campus: A matter of concern for JNUites
New Delhi, November 6 “This is for the first time ever that JNUSU polls have seen violence…not squabbles and clashes, but organised violence where one group of students armed with lathis and tubelights clashed with another,” said faculty member Kamal Mitra Chenoy, pointing out to the “reminder of lumpenism”. On November four, as the voting came to a close, some students who had failed to cast their ballot and had sought extra time clashed with those queuing up to vote. “They damaged property and beat up students, one of whom had to be operated for a damaged tendon at Safdarjung Hospital,” said Chenoy. The fact that police had to be called in and the campus had its first taste of violence during polls has been a bitter pill to swallow for the entire JNU community. “We (the teachers) have decided to meet the Vice Chancellor and persuade him to call for an all party meeting to ensure that such instances are never repeated on the campus. It is reprehensible…we have never had police on the campus except for the time when late Indira Gandhi in the 80s was invited to the campus and some students protested and police were called for a security cover,” said Chenoy. Echoing the views of the faculty, students too are agitated about the incident that left some students injured and caused the loss of property. What was once the glass door of the SL is today an empty frame, bearing testimony of the student’s ire. Considering the threat of violence on the campus during the elections, the teachers have also called for “participation of the faculty”. They said the proctorial staff or the Dean of Students Welfare should be asked to overlook the polling process so as to check the perpetrators of violence. “The teachers would be neutral and would be able to report all the occurrences without any bias,” said another faculty member. He pointed out that the recent incident would be “difficult to probe, with both accused parties putting forth their versions. It would be one’s word against the other and each having scores of supporters to attest their claims”. |
Aluminium worth Rs 5 cr seized for tax evasion
Ghaziabad, November 6 The transport companies have been transporting aluminium from a factory in Chhatisgarh state for onward dispatch to Delhi-Haryana and Rajasthan. The aluminium had been illegally stored in the godowns by evading tax. The trade tax officials are now busy examining the ledgers, all relevant documents and bills. The transporters have allegedly evaded trade tax to the tune of Rs 50 lakh, department sources said. S.P. Chauhan, Addl. Commissioner, Trade Tax, said that the trade tax department had been getting information about the tax evasion on a large scale. The transporters were planning to sell the goods with new tailored bills and documents, the Additional Commissioner said. Joint Commissioner Surinder Pal Singh was asked to conduct an inquiry. He organised raids on the transport company godowns with a team of officials. The team under
Jt. Commissioner S.P. Singh had conducted a probe into the godowns with
Dy. Commissioner J.B. Singh of transport wing of the trade tax department. The
Jt. Commissioner said that aluminium worth crores, manufactured in Hindalco Steel Plant at Sone Bhadr and Korba aluminium sheet plant in Chhatisgarh state, had been stored in these godowns by showing stock transfers. Aluminium sheet and coil worth Rs 1.50 crore were from Korba plant. According to documents, Korba Steel products were meant to be transported to Faridabad, Delhi and Rajasthan. Though the traders had got the entire consignment properly cleared at Maharajpur trade tax check post, the aluminium goods consignments were unloaded at UP border godowns which was illegal according to the trade tax officials. All documents are being thoroughly examined now and the trade tax authorities hope to recover a tax penalty of Rs 50 lakh at least, Mr SP Singh added. |

NGO helpline for victims of rape
Faridabad, November 6 Mr Ravi Kant, Director of the ‘Shakti
Vahini’, the NGO based here, announced that this would be the first facility of its kind in the state and would mainly render its services to the poor and destitute women, who often become the victims and do not get justice. He said the two phone numbers of the helpline would soon begin functioning. Of late, the crimes against women, especially rapes had been on the rise and the sufferers and their families required proper counselling and help to overcome the trauma, he said. The recent incident of alleged abduction, rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl in the Surajkund area had left the residents shaken, as it had not only exposed how the fair sex was vulnerable to the crime, but also the fact that there was virtually no one to lodge protest against such incident, he added. According to the NGO sources, if the national Capital is unsafe for women, Faridabad is more unsafe. The police records reveal that as many as 37 rape cases have already taken place in the district this year, while the number of such cases was only 32 last year. While several victims were killed after the rape, there were still many cases shrouded in mystery. The police department is stated to have closed the file of the abduction and murder of a young fashion designer, whose nude body was found hanging from a tree in Sector- 31 here in December last year. It is still not clear whether the girl had been raped before the murder. Though the police department has deputed rider cops on motorcycle to patrol various areas round the clock, the incidents of chain and purse snatching have not been curbed. The wife of a doctor who lost cash and jewellery worth over Rs 1 lakh about three months ago in Sector- 16-A market, is still to hear from the police about any development in the case. According to the NGO, the helpline is likely to provide some relief and help to the victims, as it would be linked to the police control room. |

Officials fiddle while pollution rises in Faridabad
Faridabad, November 6 While the district administration is about to
announce the spots for the sale of crackers in various parts of the
city, there are many who seem to be worried about the pollution level in
the coming days, especially at Divali and after the festival.
According to experts, the pollution level rises many times in winter
due to humidity and coolness in the atmosphere. As a result, the SPM
level goes up many times near the main roads and industrial units. It
is reported that the level, which is safe up to 200 points, has been
much higher in Faridabad and this had been mainly due to the heavy flow
of traffic. Though a committee had been set up to take measures to
contain the problem in the town on instructions of the Supreme Court, it
is stated that the results of the ‘drive’ were still to be seen.
The state government’s announcement to take off 15 years old
vehicles from the road in the district has not borne fruit so far. There
are still many old vehicles, especially auto-rickshaws, commercial
vehicles, including buses and mini-trucks, which had outdated diesel
engines or had been more than 15 years old. The authorities concerned
have not responded so far to the growing demand of CNG gas for the local
transport, including auto-rickshaws and buses. There was not a single
CNG filling station in the town and if one plies a vehicle on gas, one
has to go to Delhi, says a local transporter. A similar demand had been
raised by the Residents Welfare Associations and local social activists
at various levels in the past. Mr Kailash Sharma of the ‘Manav Sewa
Samiti’ here, has demanded a ban on the sale of ‘rockets’ that
causes much air and noise pollution besides posing a risk to life. |

Wife dies from shock as trader is stabbed
Dadri (Noida), November 6 Irate traders and shopkeepers jammed the
main road and kept their shutters down in protest against the attack on the shopkeeper
yesterday. Bhagwat Prasad Paliwal had a garment shop in Dadri town and his family used to live on the floor above the shop. As he was closing his shop for the day, some six assailants attacked him with knives. As the trader and his son raised the alarm, people rushed to their rescue. The assailants then disappeared through the narrow lanes and
bylanes. Paliwal was rushed to Naveen Hospital but was later shifted to Ghaziabad’s Yashoda Hospital as his condition
deteriorated. Paliwal’s wife Shiksha Devi was so terrorised by the murderous attack on her husband that she soon had a heart failure. This sent a shock wave among the town’s trading community who lowered their shutters and came out on the main road to jam the traffic. They also protested against the ‘ineptness’ of the police who could not nab the assailants who had just escaped on foot. The traders raised slogans against the police. After SO, Inspector Santosh Yadav, assured them that the accused would be nabbed within three days, the jam was lifted. The body of Mrs Shiksha Devi was cremated later. |
