1,127 Haryana villages sensitive Chandigarh, May 5 While denying that there had been any specific complaint against Mr Malik for violating the election code of conduct, Mr Malik said that the two staff members have been asked to join duty with immediate effect or disciplinary action would be initiated against them. The two had proceeded on medical leave in March. Mr Lall said that 1,127 villages have been declared as sensitive and 1,028 as hypersensitive in the state. The highest number of hypersensitive villages, 124, is in Gurgaon, while the lowest, 17, is in Rewari. As many as 50,000 police personnel and 30 companies of paramilitary forces will be deployed in Haryana to ensure free and fair elections. An additional company of the Haryana Armed Police has been deployed in sensitive constituencies like Bhiwani, Kurukshetra, Rohtak and Sonepat. Sufficient number of mobile parties comprising magistrate and police personnel have been constituted to check any untoward incidents. The 30 companies of paramilitary forces were being deployed as per the directions of the Election Commission. Four each had been deployed in Rohtak, Bhiwani, Sonepat and Faridabad constituencies, three each in Kurukshetra and Hisar and two each in Sirsa, Ambala, Mahendragarh and Karnal. The officiating DGP, however, said that the state has been unable to meet the target of recruiting 9000 ex-servicemen, including retired police and paramilitary personnel for undertaking security duties during the polling day. So far just 1,479 persons, who fall within the 5-year reserve service liability, have been recruited. Mr Lall said that most of the 64,000 licensed weapons in the state had been deposited with the authorities as was required, except those permitted for security and guard duty at vulnerable establishments. However, nothing could be said about unlicenced weapons. He said 12,574 polling booths had been set up in 8,704 buildings in the state. Special booths have also been set up for the weaker section so as to enable them to exercise their franchise fearlessly. |
Sushma hammers on foreign origin issue Jagadhari, May 5 Addressing an election rally here this morning, Mrs Swaraj asked on what grounds was Mrs Gandhi planning to become the Prime Minister. “Mrs Sonia Gandhi took up Indian citizenship after 16 years of marriage,” she said. “Can Mrs Sonia Gandhi tell the difference between Ekadashi and Puranmashi? One cannot understand life in a village by simply reading a speech written by others,” Mrs Swaraj said. Mrs Swaraj said that in case of trouble at our borders, our youths protect the integrity of our nation. “However, no Italian will come to protect incase of any trouble,” she said. Referring to the affidavit filed by Mrs Sonia Gandhi in the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency, Mrs Swaraj said that the affidavit shows there is only one house in the name of Mrs Sonia Gandhi. “The house owned by Mrs Sonia Gandhi is in Italy. A person owns a house in a place where the person feels will be suitable after retirement. Clearly, it is not the case with Mrs Sonia Gandhi,” she said. The Union Minister said “in 1984, the Congress had 405 MPs and we had only two MPs. In 1999, the Congress came down to 112 MPs while the BJP went up to 182 MPs”. She said that the Congress would win less than 100 seats. “While Mr Vajpayee is a seasoned politician, Mrs Sonia Gandhi is inexperienced,” she said. Mrs Swaraj, who began campaigning in Haryana today from the Ambala Lok Sabha constituency, said, “the government will be formed with the consent of the people. The government has to answer to the people.” Mrs Swaraj said “Mr Vajpayee observed that development of villages is crucial for making the country a developed nation”, she said. “She stated earlier there were only 536 km of four lane roads but we have undertaken fourlaning of 14846 km of road,” she said. KARNAL: Ms Sushma Swaraj’s canvassing at Karnal in favour of BJP candidate I.D. Swami was four hours late than the scheduled time. Gathering was very thin. She spoke for three to four minutes criticizing Congress president Ms Sonia Gandhi. Ms Sushma Swaraj said there was a wave in favour of the BJP and alliance partners and the NDA would win majority. |
Lok Janshakti Party to back Cong in Haryana Gurgaon, May 5 Announcing the decision of the party here, the vice-president of the Haryana
unit, Mr Ram Raj Sharma, said that his party would ensure the victory of all Congress nominees in the state. Although there is an alliance between the Congress and the Lok Janshakti Party ,there was sharp differences within the Haryana unit of the party over its support to the
Congress. The state president of the party, Mr Shamsher Singh Malik, and his supporters were firm on not extending support to the Congress.
However, the leadership of the Lok Janshakti Party finally cracked the whip leading to Mr Shamsher Singh quitting the
party, clearing the decks for the organisation’s support to the Congress. |

farmers Sirsa, May 5 Recounting achievements of the NDA in his 25-minute speech Mr Naidu said that the Vajpayee government worked for the farmers and allocated 60 per cent of central budget for this purpose. The BJP leader said that Mrs Gandhi looked to Mr Mulayam Singh, Ms Mayawati, Mr Sharad Pawar for support and now had a pact with Mr Laloo Yadav. Mr Naidu said that it was the achievement of the Vajpayee government that foreign reserves of the nation had increased to $ 108 billion while the Congress pushed the nation under debt. All villages of the country including those in Haryana were being linked with metalled roads. The NDA government has also undertaken linking the rivers for a permanent solution to drought and floods. Mrs Gandhi, Mr Bhajan Lal and Mr Om Prakash Chautala were feeling bad over popularity of the BJP. Criticising Mr Om Prakash Chautala and Mr Bansi Lal the BJP president said that the elections would decide national leadership and not regional leaders. He accepted Chaudhary Devi Lal’s and Chaudhary Charan Singh’s contribution to the welfare of the farmers. He appealed to the people of Sirsa to make Mr Vajpayee the Prime Minister by voting for Mahaveer Parsad. |
Heat may hit turnout Ambala, May 5 Generally, the voters’ turnout remains low in summers as compared to that in the winter months and it may effect electoral fortunes of some candidates. The candidates have been organising their meetings either in schools or in chopals in villages where people could get some relief from the heat. The harvesting season of wheat crop is over. Even than the attendance in rural meetings is being found low. In urban areas, the political parties put a “shamiana” at the rally site in this season or they prefer to organise it during the evening hours when temperature comes down. During the last fortnight, on the day of filing nomination papers, the BSP and INLD had organised its rallies at Ambala Cantt in afternoon. Both parties had set up big “shamianas” and arranged pedestal fans at the rally site. Even than the party workers were feeling uncomfortable to sit there for long time because of heat. The coolers were put near the chairs of senior party leaders. Congress leaders were lucky in this regard. On May 2, when they organised a rally of Ms Sonia Gandhi at Ambala
Cantt, the weather was cloudy and pleasant and it was one of the reasons that the gathering was more than expected. |
