A pall of gloom descended on the city today as the tragic news of the death of four schoolchildren in an accident spread. People from different walks of life joined the bereaved parents and relatives at various hospitals to be with them in their hour of grief. 

Residents block rail traffic

Angry residents of the Himmat Nagar area today blocked rail traffic for a few hours after four schoolchildren were killed and 14 others injured when the van they were travelling in was hit by a train at an unmanned railway crossing.

The Rotary Club, Ludhiana Midtown, hosted the ‘Assembly of Sankalp’. An annual assembly of Rotary District 3070, it was held at Park Plaza here recently. About 500 Rotarians from the northern region attended the assembly.

Tributes paid to judge’s son

A large number of people paid their last respects to Sanjeev Kaushik, son of Additional Sessions Judge Ludhiana, Mr Inderjit Kaushik, who died in a road accident on April 23, near Chowki Maan village under Jagraon police district.

The king of fruits, mango, is back. chef Siddanshu Rajhans has prepared exotic dishes using mango as the main ingredient in a food festival, ‘Aam ka Darbar’, organised at Hotel Majestic Park Plaza here today. The chef said this year, he had prepared new salty recipes with mangoes like Travancore fish curry with mango, which consisted of semi-ripe mangoes, Kochi bay shrimps and Thai lamb curry.

Spice services hit
Ludhiana, May 5
Spice services remained suspended for four hours from 10 am to 2 pm today. Although the company officials refused to give any reason, it was learnt that there was some serious technical problem which left Spice subscribers high and dry.

Though there is no provision to impose President’s rule during election. Fair elections under a caretaker government are not possible. The care taker government enjoys several privileges which normally do not draw the attention of the CEC. Illicit relations led to the murder of a migrant youth from Bihar living in Jamalpur Awana village on the Chandigarh road last night . According to the FIR lodged by Nizamuddin, his brother Saddam Hussain, 22, had illicit relations with a girl living in the same area.

Kotak Mahindra Bank branch opens

Kotak Mahindra Bank, which offers financial solutions, today opened its first retail banking branch in Ludhiana at Feroze Gandhi Market. The branch was inaugurated by Mr Suman Kant Munjal of the Hero Group, and Mr Uday Kotak, executive vice-chairman and managing director of the bank.

Arts students can now do B.Sc Hons (Home Sc)

In a major decision, Punjab Agricultural University has changed the eligibility criteria for admission to B.Sc. in Home Science (Hons) four-year course of the College of Home Science. The criteria has been changed to include candidates of Class XII (Arts) with home science subject.

Lawyers demand chambers
Ludhiana, May 5
The Organisation of Young Lawyers today urged the president of the District Bar Association, Mr Balwinder Goel, to cancel the allotment of chambers to the non-practising lawyers. They alleged that several non-practising lawyers had been allotted chambers.

 

HEALTH

Cyst removed via laparascopy
Ludhiana, May 5

Doctors at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital removed a large hydrated cyst from liver, using laparascopic surgery. The procedure has been reportedly done for the first time in Punjab to remove such a cyst.
