INLD govt to fall in 3 months: Bhajan
Our Correspondent

Jhajjar, May 1
Describing the INLD government as the setting sun, the president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee and former Chief Minister, Mr Bhajan Lal, said the Om Prakash Chautala government would be held accountable for its misdeeds and atrocities on the people after the Assembly elections in the state.

“The people will get rid of this government within three months”, he said while addressing a public meeting in favour of the party nominee from Sonepat Mr Dharampal Singh Malik, at Bahadurgarh last evening. The meeting first got delayed due to rain and was also interrupted a couple of times.

Mr R.K. Dhawan, general secretary, AICC, criticised the BJP-led NDA government for its India Shining campaign. Mr Karan Singh Dalal, the MLA from Palwal, who joined the Congress recently, came down heavily on the Chautala government. He targeted the local INLD MLA, alleging that the deteriorating law and order situation at Bahadurgarh had made the life of the local residents miserable. He said nearly 140 murders had taken place in the town during the past four years, which itself spoke volumes of criminal rule in the town. Mr Mange Ram Gupta, a Congress MLA and former state Finance Minister, and Mr Malik also addressed the gathering. Local Congress members complained about the strong-arm tactics of the local MLA.

Regional parties’ support vital to form govt, says Chautala
Our Correspondent

Ambala, May 1
Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala said neither the NDA nor the Congress alliance would be able to form government without the support of the INLD and several other regional parties, as none of the alliance would get absolute majority in this parliamentary elections.

He was speaking after being accorded a warm welcome near the Panchkula-Ambala border at Nada Sahib, from where he started his roadshow in a “Vijay Rath”.

Mr Chautala alleged that the NDA government had not released the Rs 3,000-crore share of Haryana and delayed the settlement of the SYL issue. The Union government further did not allow the Haryana government to take over the private sugar mills of the state, which were not paying the MSP to the sugarcane producers for their produce, he said.

He criticised the Union Home Minister for his statement to support the Congress instead of regional parties. He said after May 13, Mr Advani would be aware of the importance of regional parties.

He assured the people that after the Lok Sabha elections, he would again start the “Sarkar aapke dwar programme”. The pending development works would be completed during the remaining period of his government, he added.

The candidate of the INLD from Ambala, Mr Balwant Singh, and the Naraingarh MLA, Mr Pawan Diwan Swhahni, accompanied Mr Chautala in this campaign.

Three hours of sleep, and Selja’s on

Jansui (Ambala), May 1
A sudden downpour this morning delayed Congress candidate Selja’s arrival at several villages that she visited yesterday. However, the fact that she was running nearly four hours behind schedule did not dampen the spirit of the villagers, who waited for her patiently.

Contesting the parliamentary elections for the fifth time, the leader is used to the travails of campaigning. She achieved success at a young age when she became one of the youngest ministers in the Narasimha Rao government. Although she has represented the Sirsa constituency, she is contesting from this constituency for the first time.

Ms Selja begins her day with meeting people at her residence in Sector 9, Urban Estate, in Ambala City, at times as early as 6.30 am.

Yesterday’s programme was chalked out in advance, assisted in her campaigning by former Haryana minister Nirmal Singh. She visited a number of villages, including Chapra, Sonta, Jansui, Naggal, Baknaur, Udaipur, Naneola, Chormastpur, Balana, Jalbera, Tharwa Majri, Gada, Bada, Nanhera and Kolan. She also had to make several unscheduled stops and take detours on the request of local people.

Ms Selja, who is using a black Scorpio for campaigning, says she likes the hustle and bustle of campaigning. “Although I get merely two or three hours of sleep a day, I enjoy meeting people. I like reaching out to them,” she said.

Dressed in simple salwar-kameez, she makes it a point to interact with women. She is also not too fond of jewellery and wears simple earrings. “I do not believe in any form of ostentatious display,” she says.

At the public meetings she appeals to the voters to choose the “correct candidate” since it is to decide the future of the nation. “Your vote will decide what type of government is formed. You gave our opponents an opportunity and look at the poor result. Today, there is a wave in favour of the Congress,” she says.

Referring to the minimum support price for farmer’s produce, Ms Selja says the Congress had introduced it for the benefit of the farmers but the BJP wants to finish it.

“The Indian National Lok Dal has pursued anti-farmer policies. It has harassed farmers and a case was registered against BKU president Ghasi Ram Nain. The INLD had claimed that it would provide free power but it did not do so,” she told farmers at Naggal village.

Ms Selja stressed that there was no feel-good factor in the country. “The BJP has looked after the interest of only a handful of elite people,” she said, adding, “Only Ms Gandhi has reached out to the masses.”
