CM alleges double standards by EC

Dhillon for making Ludhiana a model city

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate for the Ludhiana Parliamentary constituency, Mr. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, has promised to turn Ludhiana into a model city if he is voted to power.

All developmental activities to be carried out by the government have come to a standstill and the campaign period, feel many, is too long. The students are getting restless as not much studies are going on with the teachers being asked to go for election duties.

Husband, in-laws booked for demanding dowry
Ludhiana, May 1
A local woman has alleged that she has been tortured for dowry by her husband and in-laws since she was married. Ms Vandana Aggarwal, (31), resident of South Model Gram here, was married to Pankaj Aggarwal, an employee in the Bhakra Beas Management Board, Jamalpur, in 2002.

SBI takes possession of mortgaged property
Ludhiana, May 1
Continuing with its campaign against loan defaulters, the Miller Ganj branch of State Bank of India yesterday took possession of the property of Mr Vasdev, son of Mr Kasturi Lal, for failing to repay the loan to the bank.

Cracker fire victim dies, case registered
Ludhiana, May 1
One of the five persons injured in yesterday’s fire incident in Field Gunj succumbed to injuries at a local hospital today morning. Deepak Kumar, the youngest son of Kishan Lal, a printing press owner, died today morning while the condition of his mother Sarla is stated to be critical.

Dhillon greets workers on May Day

Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, SAD-BJP nominee for the Ludhiana Parliamentary seat, while addressing a rally in the Industrial Area here today said the good industrial policy direction of the NDA Government had led to a peaceful industrial atmosphere and had given a competitive edge to the Indian Industry. But, he added, in all this the valuable contribution of the labour force cannot be undermined. He extended warm greetings to the industrial workers who had toiled hard to make Ludhiana a big industrial city.

7 booked for forcing girl to marry
Ludhiana, May 1
On a statement of a 21-year-old girl living in Koom Kalan village, a case under Sections 366, 368, 376 and 120-B of the IPC was registered yesterday at the Koom Kalan police station against Daljit Singh, his wife, Guddi, and Harparshad Singh, residents of the same village, Inder Singh, a resident of Ghumait village, near Koom Kalan , Bhajan Kaur, a resident of Nangal village in Moga district, another woman named Sibu, who lives at Malah village in Ludhiana district, and Gurpal Singh, a resident of Gurusar Kaunke village, near Jagraon.

Industrialists meet CM  on labour unrest

A group of leading industrialists from the city today met the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, at the residence of the Mayor, Mr Nahar Singh Gill, and brought to his notice the problems arising due to labour unrest. The industrialists sought his intervention to tame elements who were bent upon disturbing the industrial atmosphere in the city.

CFS achieves growth of 800 pc
Ludhiana, May 1
The Punjab State Warehousing Corporation’s Container Freight Station (CFS) here has achieved a growth of 800 per cent in the past 13 years of handling cargo. Disclosing this here today, Mr Amandeep Singh, Chief Port Manager, said the CFS, Ludhiana, was the first station in northern India to adopt ISO 9001:2000 standards for which it had received recommendations and certifications for port operations.

96 cases settled at Lok Adalat
Ludhiana, May 1
Nearly 96 cases were settled at the Lok Adalat held under the supervision of the Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, Mr Baldev Singh(District and Sessions Judge), here today. Eleven Benches were constituted for the speedy disposal of the cases and convenience of the public.

Lillete happy to raise ‘Womanly Voices’

“I feel very happy to have directed the play, ‘Womanly Voices’. It has given me immense satisfaction to have directed three powerful stories written by women in different settings and periods. To convert stories into plays has not only stretched me but my cast too”, said theatre artiste Lillete Dubey, addressing a press conference here this afternoon before the staging of the play at Guru Nanak Bhavan.

City lads register 3-wicket win
Ludhiana, May 1
Chinton Sehgal hammered 65 while Gagandeep Dhand and Yogesh captured four and three wickets, respectively, as Ludhiana began their campaign with 3-wicket victory over Minor Districts Zone B XI in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament (under-17 years) being organised by the Punjab Cricket Association at the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys ground here today.
