22 students honoured with college colours

Ludhiana, March 28
A roll of honour of Panjab University was bestowed on Jaspreet, Gurleen and Jasdeep for academic, Daljeet, Mandeep and Amandeep for cultural activities, Daljeet, Jagmeet and Namina for quiz and Harpreet Kaur for athletics. As many as 22 students were honoured with college colours for socio-cultural activities and sports. Merit certificates were given to four students, three for cultural activities and one for sport, at the annual convocation of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujjarkhan Campus, Model Town held today. Dr Rajesh Anand, Joint Secretary, UGC, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Dr Anup Kaur Bansal, Principal of the college, welcomed the chief guest and other guests. She presented the annual report of the academics, sports and co-curricular acitivities. Degrees were conferred on 202 arts and 60 commerce graduates, 30 English post- graduates and 20 students of the PGDCA.

Dr Rajesh Anand congratulated degree holders and meritorious students of the college, who had excelled in academics, cultural and extra -curricular activities. He gave away prizes and applauded the college for its contribution in sports and other fields and inspired students to work hard. He advised students to inculcate a positive perception in life to compete with multinational companies.

Prof Brahm Jagdiah, a Punjabi writer, and Dr Nahar Singh, known for his contributions towards the Punjabi folklore, were honoured for their achievements in the Punjabi literature. Prof Gurbir Singh Sarna, Secretary of the governing body of the college, extended the vote of thanks.

A painting exhibition was organised by four students, Summit, Pooja, Satwinder and Pinky, of BA final year. The artists had exhibited 200 paintings, including portraits, posters, compositions, book covers, still life and landscapes.

Tagore Vidya annual day

Ludhiana, March 28
Tagore Vidya Mandir celebrated its 28th annual day and prize distribution function here today. Ms Manjit Kaur Sodhia presided over the function. An art and craft exhibition, Art-2004, was organised by students of the school.

The students presented a cultural programme. Over 50 students participated in the programme, which included group songs and a play titled “Ulti Ganga”, a gidda and a bhangra. The students contributing to the art and craft exhibition were also honoured.

As many as 115 students received mementoes for achieving outstanding grades in the annual examinations and other activities of the school. Ms Sodhia talked about efforts of the school to teach the students the basic values of life through extracurricular activities. — OC

RI for bus conductor, driver

Ludhiana, March 28
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Inderjit Kaushik, has convicted a driver and conductor of M/s Deol Bus Service on a charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a driver of Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) and stopping him from discharging his duty.

The driver, Jagjit Singh of Khera village, Dehlon, has been sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment of two years and pay fine of Rs 750. Whereas the main accused, conductor of the bus, Rupinder Singh of Raikot has been sentenced to three years imprisonment, with a fine of Rs 1500 under different sections.

The two were booked at Dakha Police station on September 26, 2001, following a complaint by Azad Singh, driver of PRTC. The complainant said that he was on duty on bus (PB-11L-7905) of Barnala Depot on the Jalandhar, Sirsa route.

He picked up a few passengers at Mullanpur bus stand and when his bus reached near railway crossing, the accused overtook his bus and parked their bus in front of his bus. Conductor Rupinder Singh brought an iron rod and started beating him up tore his uniform and injured his arm. The co-accused driver Jagjit Singh was inciting the conductor to beat him up. But the accused pleaded not guilty and claimed they were implicated.

World Theatre Day celebrated

Ludhiana, March 28
Mr Rai Aziz Ullah Khan, Member, National Assembly, Pakistan was the chief guest on the World Theatre Day celebrated at Punjabi Bhawan her yesterday. It was organised by Rangmanch Sansthan.

Two plays were staged in Punjabi Bhawan. The first play ‘Dastan-e-Dil’ was produced by Sirjana Art Group, Raikot. It was a single-actor play, written directed and performed by Som Pal Hira about Lal Singh Dil, a revolutionary Punjabi poet. It brought out the discrimination to lower caste people.

The second play- ‘Kuknus Marda Nahin’ was produced by Ludhiana Kala Manch. It was written and directed by Dr S N Sewak. It was based on the life of Dulla Bhatti. Tarlochan Panesar as Dulha, Amrita Sewak as Ladhi, Swapan Chanana as sutardhar and Akbar, Randeep as Salma, Kawinder Kalsi as Noor Made, Punam Rawat as Gujri and Jagdev Singh as Saida put up a good performance. The music was by Raj Kumar. Two more plays Macbeth (in Punjabi) and ‘Sayyaen Bhayo Kotwal’ (in Hindi would be staged on March 28.

Rai Aziz Ulla said both the productions were good and promised to promote cultural relations between India and Pakistan in his capacity as the chairman of tourism and cultural committee of Pakistan National Assembly.

Mr Nirmal Jaura, general secretary, Rangmanch Sansthan, highlighted the role of theatre workers in fostering international understanding. Dr S.N. Sewak president of the sansthan expressed gratitude of theatre workers to Rai Aziz Ulla Khan.
