Mayawati rules out alliance in UP

Jammu, March 28
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati today ruled out alliance with any political outfit in the Lok Sabha elections and made it clear that the party would contest alone in Uttar Pradesh.

Talking to reporters after addressing a rally here, Ms Mayawati said, ‘’We will go alone in UP elections as 35 per cent of the total population there constitute the Bahujan Samaj who are our vote bank.’’

To a query about the Congress and the Samajwadi Party’s (SP) chances of an alliance in UP, she said her party had not taken any view or considered any type of alliance in UP so far.

The BSP chief further said her party was the single most powerful party in the UP belt having an 85 per cent of vote bank under its sway. ‘’That is why the BJP, the Congress and the SP are scared of us’’, she said adding ‘’we are not afraid of anyone.’’

Referring to Jammu and Kashmir, she said this time the BSP had fielded three candidates.

Earlier, in her public address, she called upon the Bahujan Samaj to unite to defeat the forces of upper castes, ‘’who have been governing your destiny for the last 50 years.’’

She added that the Bahujan Samaj had only been exploited by ‘’all those parties from the Congress to the BJP in the name of religion and caste discrimination.’’

Cong accuses NC of secret pact with BJP

Jammu, March 28
Jammu and Kashmir Congress today accused the National Conference of entering into a “secret understanding” with the BJP and fielding “weak candidates” in some constituencies in the state to ensure the victory of the BJP candidates.

The National Conference has entered into a secret understanding with the BJP and has fielded weak candidates in seats like Udhampur and Jammu in order to help the BJP and defeat Congress candidates, Congress leader and Health Minister Lal Singh told a rally in Doda. “NC and BJP are two sides of the same coin and people must see through this sinister design”, he said.

The Congress leader said while the NC was raising the bogey of autonomy and pre-1953 status for the state, its “secret alliance” partner BJP was communalising the situation on one pretext or the other. — PTI
