Chautala’s brother to join BJP

Sirsa, February 25
A younger brother of Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, Ranjit Singh, presently a prominent Haryana Congress leader and a former MP has decided to join the BJP as he had been “feeling suffocated” in the Congress.

He told reporters at his residence here last evening that he had been “feeling suffocated” in the Congress for the last few months and was completely disillusioned with the present leadership of both the Congress high command as well as the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC).

Ranjit Singh said he expected to join the BJP during this week at its headquarters in Delhi.

He said he was confident that ultimately the BJP would have an edge over all other political parties in Haryana and the political scenario would be drastically changed.

Criticising the former Chief Minister Bansi Lal-led Haryana Vikas Party, he said the party which had taken a vow to raise to the ground the statues of national heroes like Devi Lal could never come back to power democratically.

Taking a dig at the ruling Indian National Lok Dal led by his brother Om Prakash Chautala, he said its rank and file was now “totally disenchanted as all powers were centralised in one family.

While lauding Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for providing a stable government through a coalition of numerous political outfits, he said at present he was the only leader who could steer the ship of India’s destiny towards economic, political and social stability. — PTI

CM thanks Meham panchayat
Tribune News Service

Rohtak, February 25
The Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala today thanked the Meham Chaubisi panchayat for the support extended to his family and the party saying his future generations too would gratefully remember Meham for this.

He was addressing a public meeting at Meham after laying the foundation stone of the extension project of the historic Meham Chaubisi chabutra where the panchayat traditionally meets.

Mr Chautala said he had tried to do his best for the development of Meham but at the same time admitted that he might not have been able to do everything he wanted to do because of certain limitations. However, he said he had not forgotten what remained to be done.

He said Meham was a historic place where the panchayati tradition had survived for hundreds of years. The area had great potential for tourism and this needed to be exploited. It was with this aim that the late Mr Devi Lal had set up a tourist complex here which was later closed down by the regimes that followed.

Mr Chautala said his government was determined to restore the lost glory of the area and the paucity of funds would not be allowed to come in the way of development and progress of the area.

Mr Chautala later laid the foundation stones of several projects in the area. He was accompanied by Mr Balbir Singh and Mr Balwant Maina, legislators and the chairman of the Zila Parishad, Mr Dharampal Makrauli.

HSIDC launches 3 projects

Gurgaon, February 25
In its efforts to make Gurgaon a major industrial hub on the international map, the Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation (HSIDC) has launched three projects worth about Rs 76 crore in this fast, developing industrial town.

A spokesman of the HSIDC said here today that the project included an auditorium and a gems and jewellery park at Udyog Vihar and a hospital at Industrial Model Township, Manesar.

Regarding the Rs 50-crore gems and jewellery park, he said it had been planned to meet the rising export needs of gems and jewellery from India. He emphasised that the gems and the jewellery made by the traditional Indian artisans had a great demand in the international market.

The highlights of the park would be an ideal location near the national capital, the mart area, manufacturing units of varying sizes, multi-level car parking, fully air-conditioned interior with 100 per cent power back up, glass capsule lifts and escalators and separate entries from four corners to the manufacturing units.

Referring to the hospital at IMT, Manesar, he said it would be operational by October, 2005, and the cost of the project was Rs 25.24 crore. He said the hospital, spread over 1800 sq mtrs at a prime location, would provide 100-beded indoor facilities of international standards.

He said the auditorium, which had been constructed at a cost of Rs 60 lakh, was part of the existing building of the HSIDC at Gurgaon and had been set up to provide an appropriate venue for presentations and discussions of the industrialists. — PTI

Birthday celebrated once in 4 years
Rahul Das
Tribune News Service

Ambala, February 25
Siddharth Oberoi, a class VI student of Army School, is eagerly looking forward to celebrate his birthday on February 29.

Birthdays are special for everyone but for Siddharth it is extra special since he gets to celebrate it once in four years. Siddharth’s birthday falls on the last day of February this year and the last time he celebrated it was in the year 2000.

Siddharth Oberoi told Chandigarh Tribune that he was very happy to be getting an opportunity to celebrate his birthday after nearly four years. “My friends tease me that I am just four years old,” he said.

“My grandmother, Mrs Lajja Oberoi, my maternal grandparents, Mr Subhash Mehra and Mrs Swaran Mehra, are all looking forward to celebrate my birthday,” he said.

Mr Ashwani Oberoi, Siddharth’s father, said that Siddharth was born on February 29, 1992. “February 29 is indeed a special day for the family. We are going to celebrate his birthday in a grand manner and a number of relatives are expected at his birthday party,” he said.

Siddharth’s mother, Dr Sonia Oberoi, recalled that she was not too happy on her son’s birthday falling on February 29. “I had hoped that it would be any other day except the 29th of February. But, he was born on February 29,” she says with a laugh.

Incidentally, Siddharth is not the only person to be born on February 29 in his family. Mr Ashwani Oberoi’s niece, who is in Jalandhar, is also born on February 29.

To turn February 29 into a special day, the Oberoi family has arranged for a special party. Also, Sharvi, Siddharth’s sister, has learnt a ‘Happy Birthday song’ on the piano. “I am going to play the song on his birthday,” she said.

According to information available, a leap year is a year in which an extra day is added to the calendar in order to synchronize it with the seasons. Since the tropical year is 365.242190 days long, a leap year must be added roughly once every four years. In a leap year, the extra day (known as a leap day) is added at the end of February, giving it 29 instead of the usual 28 days.

In the Gregorian calendar currently in use worldwide, there is a leap year every year divisible by four except for years which are both divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400. The list of leap years in the first half of the 21st century is, therefore, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, 2044, and 2048.

Information in a website stated that the leap year was introduced in the Julian calendar in 46 BC. However, around 10 BC, it was found that the priests in charge of computing the calendar had been adding leap years every three years instead of
the four decreed by Caesar. As a result of this error, no more
leap years were added until 8 AD. Leap years were, therefore, 45 BC, 42 BC, 39 BC, 36 BC, 33 BC, 30 BC, 27 BC, 24 BC, 21 BC, 18 BC, 15 BC, 12 BC, 9 BC, 8 AD, 12 AD, and every fourth year thereafter until the Gregorian calendar was introduced.
