Sonia’s visit intensifies rift Chandigarh, February 22 A senior Congress leader close to Mr Bhajan Lal, HPCC chief, alleged that Mr Hooda’s claim of having a personal rapport with Ms Gandhi had been exposed. In her tentative programme Ms Gandhi is scheduled to visit just one Assembly constituency of Kalanaur Rohtak district. Rohtak is the home district of Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Ms Gandhi is neither visiting Rohtak town nor Kiloi, the Assembly constituency of Mr Hooda. This is being projected by supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal as a blow to the CLP leader, who claims having a personal rapport with Ms Gandhi. Though Ms Gandhi will neither visit Adampur, the Assembly constituency of Mr Bhajan Lal, she will spend the night of February 25 at Hisar, hometown of the HPCC chief. This, according to Mr Bhajan Lal’s supporters, is a triumph for the PCC chief. Pro-Bhajan Lal Congressmen are also claiming that the PCC chief had a hand in installing Mr R K Dhawan as the AICC in charge of the party’s state unit in place of Mr Nawal Kishore Sharma on the eve of the Lok Sabha poll. Mr Nawal Kishore Sharma, who had sprung a surprise by turning up at a rally organised at Rewari by anti-Bhajan Lal Congressmen of Haryana, had also been removed from the screening committee constituted by the AICC for recommending the names of Lok Sabha candidates from the state. Ms Noor Banu, an MP from UP, had been inducted into Sharma’s place in the screening committee. If supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal are to be believed, this development, too, has gone in their favour. Mr Hooda, however, refuted that Ms Gandhi had ignored Rohtak apart from visiting Kalanaur in Rohtak district, Ms Gandhi would also visit Jhajjar, which is a part of the Rohtak parliamentary constituency. About the replacement of Nawal Kishore Sharma by Ms Noor Banu in the screening committee, Mr Hooda claimed that he had a good equation with the new incumbent too as they were colleagues in Parliament. Mr Hooda, it is believed, also played a role in the planning of Ms Gandhi’s road show programme. According to the tentative programme, Ms Gandhi will touch seven of the 10 Lok Sabha constituencies of Haryana, leaving out Ambala, Kurukshetra and Karnal. An HPCC spokesman, however, said these constituencies were likely to be covered by Ms Gandhi during her Punjab visit. |

Col Ram Singh in race for Cong ticket Gurgaon, February 22 Col Ram Singh is considered to be the seniormost leader of the party in south Haryana, especially the Ahirwal belt. The Mahendergarh parliamentary constituency encompasses Rewari and Mahendergarh districts and a part of Gurgaon district — all forming the core of the Ahirwal belt. The Congress sitting MLAs from the Ahirwal belt — Rao Inderjit Singh, Capt Ajay
Singh, Rao Dharam Pal and Mrs Anita Yadav — are already in the race for the party ticket from Mahendergarh. While Rao Inderjit Singh is said to be from the camp represented by the Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the other aspirants, including Col Ram Singh, are hoping for the ticket on account of assurances from the president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC), Mr Bhajan Lal. A former Chief Minister, Rao, Birender Singh, father of Rao Inderjit Singh. is hinting that he is a contender for the ticket. Many see it as old tactic of Rao Birender Singh to force the Congress to give the ticket to his son. Col Ram Singh, while announcing his intention to contest the elections, came down on Rao Birender Singh for his recent statement that only Mr Om Prakash Chautala could solve the SYL imbroglio and that Mrs Sonia Gandhi was not interested in asking the Congress government in Punjab to expedite the completion of the project. Col Ram Singh said the Congress would form the government in Haryana and Mr Bhajan Lal would get the construction work completed. He, however, expressed ignorance when it was pointed out that Mr Bhajan Lal had also made a statement a few months ago that Mrs Gandhi did not heed to his plea to approach the Punjab Government on the SYL issue. |

Leaders want to join BJP: Kataria Yamunanagar, February 22 He said all five sitting members of Parliament (MP) of the BJP would contest the coming elections. For the rest of the five seats, party workers would be given the
ticket. Criticising the Om Prakash Chautala government, he said the Centre had allocated 88 crore as arrears of sugarcane, but the Haryana Government had not accepted the package. He also alleged that work on the Yamunanagar thermal power plant had not started because of the wrong policies of the state government. He claimed that as an MP he had raised the issue in Parliament and money was allocated by the Central government to start the thermal plant. Mr Kataria said that on February 29 a state level rally of the BJP would be organised. It would be attended by national leaders like Mr Sahib Singh Verma, Mr Pramod Mahajan, Mr I.D. Swami. |

Health centre building incomplete after 14 years Sirsa, February 22 The PHC provides health services to a population of about 27,000 of five villages —
Panihari, Nejadelan, Bharokhan, Vedwala and Farwainkalan. Its building does not have a boundary wall to prevent the entry of stray animals. To make matters worse, people have started encroaching on PHC land. The health centre also lacks basic amenities such as water and electricity. Residential quarters for employees are without windows and doors, which have been removed by people. The PHC in charge Dr Rajesh, said the centre, which was earlier being run from a two-room accommodation provided by the panchayat, had to be shifted to this rickety building to ensure its upkeep. He said two ponds on the PHC premises had been filled and electrification of half of the building completed. A staff nurse, Nirmal, working at the PHC for the past nine years, and a pharmacist, Amita, working for the past six years, said provision for basic facilities on the new premises had not been made despite the long time it took for the shifting. The medical in charge failed to tell why the building had been left incomplete by the PWD (B & R). The Executive Engineer, Mr J. R. Gupta, of the department concerned said the building had been handed over to the Health Department, almost 12 years after its foundation stone was laid. He said it was upto the Panchayati Raj Department to look after Health Department’s buildings. The CMO, Dr Mohar Singh, said the PHC was to be constructed at a cost of about Rs 14.50 lakh. However, despite spending more than Rs 20 lakh, the PWD had not been able to complete the project and now a revised estimate
had been submitted. He said his department had not formally taken over the building but had temporarily started work there. |
