Farmers suffer due
to polluted water Chandigarh, February 21 Polluted water from Bhiwadi industries of Rajasthan flows into these villages through a channel and get mixed with the ground water affecting its quality. Capt Ajay Singh Yadav, Congress party’s deputy leader in the House and a legislator from Rewari, said flow of polluted water increased during the rainy season and created problems for farmers and other villagers. “Rewari has an acute problem of water. The reluctance of Rajasthan to construct treatment plants is further aggravating problems faced by the farmers of this district”, Yadav alleged. The issue has not triggered off inter-state tension yet even though it has been taken note of by the Committee on Estimates of the Haryana Assembly. The report of the committee for 2003-04, said that on being pointed out
that there was a flow of polluted water from Bhiwadi industries of Rajasthan to Haryana, the Chairman of the Haryana Pollution Control Board replied that they were assured by the authorities of the Rajasthan Government regarding setting up of effluent treatment plants (ETPs) to check pollution of the water. The Chairman was asked by the committee to take up the matter with the Rajasthan Government in this regard. An official of the Environment Department of the Haryana Government, when contacted by this reporter, said several meetings had been already held with the Rajasthan Government on how to check the flow of polluted water from Rajasthan to Rewari. “Since it is an inter-state issue, we have urged the central government also to persuade Rajasthan to take effective steps to stop the flow of polluted water”, he said. |

Finding Mr Mann hesitant to make statement on the issue, many BKU leaders expressed their view that the farmers in Haryana should have equal share in the SYL with Punjab farmers. They added that due to acute shortage of water in Haryana farmers had been suffering. Therefore the problem faced by the farmers in Haryana had to be understood by the farmers of Punjab. Despite repetitive request from local leaders, Mr Mann remained silent over the SYL issue. Besides it, the BKU has decided to support the Swatantar Bharat Kisan Union headed by Maharashtra leader, Mr Sharad Joshi, in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Giving details, Mr Mann said that the BKU would support the party which would have alliance with the Swatantar Bharat Kisan Union. The rally was organised by the BKU to show its importance in the forthcoming elections. Mr Mann said all political parties had exploited the farmers of the country and failed to understand the problem being faced by the farmers. Therefore, it was right time for the farmers to come and get equal representation in politics also. |
