Nine misfired rockets found in cantonment area

As many as nine misfired rockets were found in Chandi Mandir cantonment, near here, yesterday. They were found near the cantonment's perimeter fence opposite Suraj Theatre in Sector 1.

Sector 17 to have 11-storeyed tower
Chandigarh, January 27
The Chandigarh Administration has decided to auction the site for the proposed 11- storeyed commercial tower in City Centre Sector-17, Chandigarh, along with two other commercial projects here. A commercial mall site in Sector-44 has also been approved by the Administration for auction on about 2.50 acre site.

In less than a week of the major jail break by dreaded militants allegedly involved in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, the Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mr Lalit Sharma, during his speech on the occasion of Republic day claimed that ‘‘ no terrorist activity has taken place in the Union Territory during the year."

14 honoured at Republic Day function

Panchkula, January 27
The Principal Secretary to the Haryana, Chief Minister, Mr Birbal Dass Dhalia, unfurled the National flag and took the salute at an impressive march past presented by the contingents of the Panchkula police, Home Guards, NCC, Scouts, Guides, Home Guard Band and Schoolchildren on the occasion of the 55th Republic Day celebration at Panchkula yesterday.

Patriotic fervour marks R-Day celebrations

Mohali, January 27
The 55th Republic Day was celebrated amidst display of riot of colours and patriotic fervour at Government Senior Secondary School, Phase 3B1, here yesterday. More than 500 students from 15 schools in the township participated in the celebration where the chief guest Mr Bir Devinder Singh honour over 50 residents of the township for their extraordinary achievements.

Workshop on Juvenile Justice Act organised

The Juvenile Justice (Care and Prevention) Act of 2000 is not being fully implemented — at least some of the participants at a day-long workshop on the subject were of this opinion.

Fog claims life
Chandigarh, January 27
The receding fog claimed yet another life and left 23 injured in Haryana overnight. Fresh light snowfall was reported in far-flung areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh in the past 24 hours. A bus driver was killed and 23 passengers, including a woman, were injured, some of them critically, when two buses collided in Rohtak district yesterday.

Horse riding team excels
Chandigarh, November 27
The Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh NCC Directorate has attained the fifth overall position at the Republic Day Camp organised in Delhi this year. Last year, it was placed eighth among the NCC’s 16 directorates.

A seven-year-old child ‘Amit’, went missing from Shahi Majra village here last evening.


Theft in Sector 4 house
Panchkula, January 27
Cash and valuables worth over Rs 50,000 have been stolen from the house of Mr Ramneek Nagpal, a resident of Sector 4 here. Mr Nagpal had gone to Malout on January 25. However, when he returned today, he found a window- pane of the kitchen broken and the articles missing.

The Leader of Opposition in Haryana Assembly, Mr Bhupinder Hooda, today joined investigation in a dowry case filed against him and his family members by his daughter-in-law,Dr Geeta Grewal.

Taking up the Forest Hill Golf and Country Club case, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today sought full particulars of the members, along with exact amount of membership fee. The proceedings were initiated after the court took suo motu notice of a story in a national newspaper.

THIRTYFOUR-year-old Taranjit Samra was 27 when he took to bodybuilding, an age when most body builders hang their dumb-bells and retire to lead a quite life or at the most become gym instructors or personal trainers. Samra, a perfect mix of brain and brawn, is a software engineer. He migrated to the USA in 1992 for higher studies. But along with studies he also developed a passion for bodybuilding.

WENTYTHREE-year-old Dil Bahadur’s favourite haunt has been the “bartan bazaar” of Patiala for years together. Having surveyed the local ‘bazaar’ he has branched out to other such bazaars in Delhi, Ludhiana, Moga, Jagadhri and Badni. The result has been a virtual hoard — in priceless coins. For someone who did not know anything about numistology, Dil Bahadur was attracted to this hobby by a single action. Playing with kites when in class VIII, Dil Bahadur saw a coin slipping out of a friend’s pocket. After picking it up he realised it was one an old one which was not in circulation any longer. Allowed to keep the coin once he showed interest in it, Dil Bahadur had found the hobby of his life.

The Chandigarh Badminton Association (CBA) has been allotted the National Mini and Sub-junior Badminton meet for 2004-2005. According to Mr TPS Puri, Secretary of the association, earlier the UT had hosted the Junior National Badminton meet in 2000.
