MLA’s arrest: Cong plans demonstrations
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 21
The arrest of Mr Jai Prakash, a former Union Deputy Minister and sitting Congress MLA from Barwala, has evoked widespread condemnation.

Haryana Congress President, Bhajan Lal said Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala could not gag the Congress by implicating its leaders in false cases. The Chief Minister was trying to divert public attention from his failures. The Chautala Government, he said, had implicated over 36 senior Congress leaders and hundreds of party workers in false cases.

Mr Bhajan Lal warned those government officers who, he alleged, were instrument in harassing political opponents of the INLD, to be ready to face action when the Congress regained power. He termed Mr Jai Prakash’s arrest as “an indication of the Chief Minister’s frustration over the fast growing unpopularity of his government”.

The Leader of the Opposition in Haryana, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, in a statement issued here today announced a series of demonstrations in the state in protest against the arrest of Mr Jai Prakash in “false and baseless cases”. The first such demonstration will be held at Kaithal tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Condemning the “mean tactics” of Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, Mr Hooda said the implication of political opponents in false cases amounted to murdering democracy. Several MLAs, former MLAs and prominent opposition leaders would participate in tomorrow’s demonstration.

The Deputy Leader of the Haryana Congress Legislature Party, Capt Ajay Singh Yadav, alleged that Mr Chautala was trying to curb the Opposition’s voice inside the assembly through the Speaker and outside through the police.

RPI MLA Karan Singh Dalal alleged that since the wife of a top functionary of the Haryana Police wanted to contest the next Lok Sabha elections on the INLD ticket, the police in the state had been reduced to the status of handmaid of the ruling party and was a willing participant in harassing political opponents of the government.

Mr Dalal alleged that an SP-rank officer wanted to repay the powers that be for the appointment of his son as a Sub-Inspector by implicating political opponents of the INLD in false cases. This, he said, had been his track record in all districts wherever he had been posted.

A spokesman of the All-India Congress Committee, Ms Selja, demanded that all cases registered against the political opponents of the INLD should be investigated by the CBI. The allegation against Mr Jai Prakash that he looted Rs 3600 was “just ridiculous”, she added.

Traders demand withdrawal of VAT

Sirsa, October 21
The Haryana Government should withdraw Value Added Tax (VAT) regime immediately, otherwise it would face the consequences in the next Assembly elections, warned the Haryana Pardesh Vayapar Mandal president Bajrang Das Garg here.

He was addressing a news conference here yesterday while on a visit to the city.

The traders’ leader alleged that by imposing the VAT regime in the state in isolation, the Chautala government’s anti-traders face had been exposed. He said every government in the state had been formed with the help of traders, who had about 35 per cent of votes. But now due to the apathy by the government they had decided to field their own candidates in the next Vidhan Sabha elections.

He also criticised the state government for not withdrawing the taxes imposed during prohibition as promised in their election manifesto. Moreover, the claim of elimination of inspector raj by this government had proved to be hollow as the imposition of ST-38 had attributed to the increase in corruption. — UNI
