Sonia’s visit reopens old
wounds of villagers Damdama (Gurgaon), September 13 The presence of former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, has acted as catalyst to remind the villagers of the way they were jilted by him after they had donated 15 acres of village common land to set up the holiday home. The villagers allege that Mr Bhajan Lal, the then Chief Minister, had at a public meeting announced the decision on laying of the foundation stone for the home in 1994 and of having sanctioned Rs 25 lakh for infrastructures for model village. The sarpanch of the village, Mr Ranjit Singh, and two former sarpanches, Mr Prahald and Mr Kundan Singh, alleged that nothing was done in the name of developing Damadama as a model village. According to them and other villagers, the Bhajan Lal government had sent Rs 7.5 lakh as the first instalment of the sanctioned amount, but the village panchayat had not receive the money. Some villagers who were involved in the process of donating the village common land said the land had been given in two instalments. According to them, the holiday home was the pet project of Rajiv Gandhi. The trust was set up in 1952. Some villagers claimed that Mr Bhajan Lal had made the announcements in the presence of Ms Gandhi. They felt that with Rajiv Gandhi having been assasinated and the Congress government led by Mr Narasimha Rao reluctant to fulfil the promise of the model village, they had virtually no place where they could lodge their protests. The villagers had wanted to meet Ms Gandhi separately when she visited the village, but they were not allowed to do so. Only six villagers had been given passes to enter the complex and meet her. Due to paucity of time, they could not raise old issues. According to Mr Ranjit Singh, she had assured them of meeting them later. She had promised to take up the issue of starting a Delhi
Transport Corporation bus service from the village to Delhi with the Delhi Government. |
Rebels meet Sonia for Bhajan’s removal Chandigarh, September 13 Four rebel leaders, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Leader of Opposition, Ms Shelja, a former union minister, Mr Birender Singh and Mr Harpal Singh, both former chiefs of the PCC, reportedly met the AICC President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, in New Delhi yesterday to press for the restructuring at the PCC in the state. They reportedly told Ms Gandhi that the activities of the PCC had failed to motivate public. A change in the PCC leadership was needed if the Congress wanted to do well in the coming Lok Sabha elections, they said. Numerically strong castes and communities of the state such as the Jats, the Scheduled Castes, the Sikhs and the Muslims would keep away from the Congress if Mr Bhajan Lal remained the chief of the PCC at the time parliamentary poll, they added. Even though Mr Bhajan Lal had been the Chief Minister of Haryana on three occasions, he had never headed the PCC before. Ever since Mr Bhajan Lal became the president of the PCC, the Congress candidate lest the only Assembly bypoll held in Fatehabad in the state. The defeat triggered demand by Mr Hooda, an arch rival of Mr Bhajan Lal, for a special meeting of the PCC for a review to ascertain why the Congress nominee lost. Interestingly, the Congress nominee in the Fatehabad bypoll actually had fared better than the Congress candidates in the Yamunanagar and Rori
bypolls, which were held during Mr Hooda's tenure as the PCC president. The Hooda camp, however, argued that given the history of Mr Bhajan Lal's association with the Fatehabad area, the Congress nominee, a nephew of Mr Bhajan
Lal, should have won the poll instead of losing by a small margin. |

On the other hand, the BSNL and the postal authorities were blaming each other for the non-delivery of bills to the subscribers as these bills were issued from the Karnal BSNL office. The BSNL Senior Accounts Officer, Mr B.D. Gupta, told mediapersons 58,000 bills were mailed by an ordinary post and Rs 4 were paid to the postal office for each of the bill despatched.
