Chaitra Chaudas fair begins Pehowa, March 31 The fair which is held annually for three days symbolises the Hindu-Sikh unity and the deep cultural bonds between the two communities. About 90 per cent of the pilgrims were Sikhs drawn from the districts of Ropar, Panchkula, Patiala, Sangrur, Malerkotla, Faridkot, Bhatinda, Kotakpura and Ludhiana district of Punjab. The pilgrims started thronging the town since yesterday. The Punjab and the Haryana Roadways ran special bus services. The pilgrims started taking holy dip since early morning today as the auspicious time of “Chaitra Chaudas” day started. The district administration has filed the Saraswati tank with fresh water after a kar seva. The kar seva was inaugurated by Union State Minister for Home affairs I.D. Swami about two weeks back. The pilgrims could be seen offering ‘pinds’ in memory of their departed ancestors after the holy dip. It is believed as per Hindu mythological texts that the offering of “pinds” on this day on the banks of the Saraswati confers the same benefic affects to the family as the offering of ‘pinds’ in Gaya in Bihar. Sikh Gurus and Maharaja Ranjit Singh, had visited the fair. As a symbol of the holy visit of the sixth Sikh Guru, a Gurdwara stands at the banks of the holy Saraswati tank. Sikh pilgrims paid their obeisance at the historic Gurdwara after the holy dip. A large number of them also visited the Rishi Kartekaya temple at the banks of the holy tank. The administration has made elaborate security arrangements in the mela area, especially, the women ghat. However, much was left to be done as far as cleanliness in the mela was concerned. The roads were full of potholes. The lightening arrangements in the streets of the town was also poor. However, “pandas” on the ghats had a hey day. A large number of them had come from Hardwar, Roorki, Saharanpur, Delhi, Bijnor and Rajasthan cities to earn their livelihood by arranging the “pind daan”. After the visit to the fair, the pilgrims also visited the historic Shiva temple at Arunai nearby. A large number of them made a beeline to Kurukshetra to have a holy dip in the sacred waters of Brahm Sarovar and Sannihit tanks. |
