Stir against retirement scheme

Hisar, March 26
Members of the Haryana Agricultural University Teachers Association (HAUTA) staged a demonstration outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office here yesterday in protest against the proposed compulsory retirement scheme.

The demonstration was a part of the association’s ongoing stir on the issue. HAUTA has been demanding the withdrawal of the scheme and is insisting that the decision be taken at the meeting of the board of management of the university, to be held tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the HAU Non-Teaching Employees Association yesterday withdrew its call for a dharna in view of an assurance by the authorities that the issue would be reconsidered at the meeting.

On the other hand, the Guru Jambheshwar University Teachers Association has criticised the Vice-Chancellor for what it termed as “irregularities resulting in lowering of the prestige of the institution”.

In a statement issued here today, Dr Nar Singh Bishnoi, president of the association, said the authorities had re-employed several superannuated employees and given them financial and administrative powers in violation of UGC rules. Likewise, enrolments for Ph D had been done in violation of the university ordinances, he alleged.

He said while teachers were being denied due promotions, supporting staff were being promoted out of turn in complete violation of rules.

India should back Iraq: Tariq Anwar
Our Correspondent

Yamunanagar, March 26
Mr Tariq Anwar, General Secretary, Nationalist Congress Party, has said that the Central Government is under pressure because it is neither condemning the US war on Iraq nor openly supporting Iraq. Addressing mediapersons here yesterday, he said that the government should take a clear stand on the Iraq-US war.

Tariq Anwar, who was here along with Mr Ved Pal, national president of the Kisan cell of the NCP, said the Central Government should openly support Iraq because it had always supported India on the Kashmir as well as Bangladesh issues. He lashed out at the USA for attacking Iraq without taking International community into confidence.

The NCP leader said if the Congress contested the next elections under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and if they projected her as future Prime Minister then the NCP would join hands with the Third Front. He said if the Congress projected somebody else as the Prime Minister then the NCP could join hands with the Congress.

He criticised the Central Government for its wrong agricultural policies. Farmers of many states had been forced to commit suicide. He said the prices of fertilisers, petrol and diesel had been increased manifold. He reminded that when the NDA came to power it promised to provide employment to one crore youth but now it was encouraging privatisation resulting in the unemployment problem.

He said the party had launched its membership drive in the country. He said by May 2003 block-level units would be constituted. A two-day national sammelan would be organised in Delhi from May 30, he added.
