Virbhadra meets Pant New Delhi, March 22 Mr Virbhadra Singh apprised Mr Pant of the “critical fiscal situation” of the state and discussed the need to accelerate social and economic development of the state. He later told reporters that the commission would soon finalise various projects for the state’s development. Various matters relating to fiscal reforms, industrialisation and other financial issues were discussed at the meeting. The Chief Minister said he pointed out the peculiar problems faced by the hill state due to tough geographical conditions. The Planning Commission asked Himachal Pradesh to initiate measures to exploit the potential of growth in agriculture and allied activities, boost industrial development and promote tourism. “It was a customary meeting and we discussed several problems of the state. The commission has noticed crucial issues related to the state and also challenges faced by it,” Mr Pant said. During the meeting, Mr Pant pointed out that the state had vast potential for growth in the production of fruits and vegetables, livestock products, fisheries and food processing. He said to boost industrial development, the government should effectively implement its industrial policy and develop industrial infrastructure. |
CBI raids 10 places New Delhi, March 22 The countrywide drive has yielded properties worth over Rs 7 crore, cash, securities and investments worth Rs 1.54 crore, valuables like jewellery, other household items worth Rs 41 lakh and two revolvers priced at Rs 1.2 lakh. CBI sources said today that the surprise checks at the premises of Mr Goel had yielded several documents, which were under scrutiny. The raids had been carried out on the basis of specific information. About eight to 10 places in Punjab and Haryana have been raided in connection with an anti-corruption drive. The agency said Rajesh Joshi, working as a project leader with a computer firm in
Gurgaon, had been arrested for sending vulgar and indecent e-mails to a woman. Investigations revealed that these objectionable e-mails originated from a computer located in the basement of the aforesaid firm. A search of the computer resulted in the retrieval of data pertaining to the sender of the objectionable e-mails and establishing the identity of Joshi who was pretending to be Bobby Ron, the CBI said. A case has been registered against the General Manager of the Airports Authority of India, Delhi. Bank deposits worth Rs 1,886 lakh, documents showing purchase of two flats worth Rs 16.5 lakh and an agreement for the sale of one flat for Rs 10 lakh were detected. The agency said a case of cheating had been registered against a former CMD of the
PPCL, Noida, and other officials of the company, including an Executive Director and a General Manager. In this connection, searches were conducted at Sikar in Rajasthan, Hapur (UP) and Dehra Dun. |

JD(S) leader Romesh Bhandari, CPI(ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya and CPM’s women wing leader Brinda Karat. The demonstration was held as part of a call given by the Left-backed central trade unions and some opposition parties to launch massive protests all over the country. |

Broadcasting history by CNN New Delhi, March 22 This was the first time in the broadcasting history of the world when marching tanks inside the targeted country were being transmitted live from new and challenging environments. In order to achieve these historic images, Mr Rodgers used a standard videophone system connected to a specially developed tracking satellite phone antenna, mounted on the vehicle roof. This antenna has the ability to lock onto a satellite beacon and remains stationary even as the vehicle it is mounted on turns, bounces and motors along at a speed up to 100 km per hour. Photographer Charlie Miller filmed from numerous positions from inside and outside the car, bracing himself as best as he could on the car frame, while Mr Rodgers concentrated on reporting. Engineer Jeff Barwise concentrated on ensuring that the equipment worked all right. |

Student’s gang-rape case trial begins New Delhi, March 22 Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Deepa Sharma, who had framed charges against four persons, including main accused Rahul, alias Budh Prakash, on March 11, recorded the statement of the fourth-year medical college student and another witness in her chamber. After the completion of in-camera proceedings, Rahul’s counsel Ajay Digpaul told reporters that the victim identified the accused in the court. Other witnesses will be examined by the court on March 29. The police has cited 45 witnesses in the case. The court framed common charges of rape, voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery, robbery with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt, criminal intimidation and causing hurt by dangerous weapons read with common intention of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against accused Rahul and Amit. Rahul has also been charged under various Sections of the Arms Act. Rahul, Amit and Mohan Lal are in judicial custody while Ashok is out on bail. |
Cable operators to observe blackout New Delhi, March 22 During a meeting of the task force held last evening, the cable operators were informed that the government felt that a fee of Rs 35, with an additional profit of Rs 10 per household for the maintenance of control room and transmitting free-to-air channels, was adequate, going by each control room having a radius of 7 km and covering 32,000 households. The task force has to complete its work by July 14, since the notification was issued on January 14, making CAS mandatory within six months for cable television networks all over the country and giving effect to the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Act passed in the Winter Session of Parliament. |
India needs biotech policy: Kalam New Delhi, March 22 At a summit ‘Knowledge Millennium III — the Business of Biotechnology’ organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), Dr Kalam said the policy should seek to draw from the country’s traditional knowledge bank and integrate it with modern science to achieve better and faster results. The President said such integration would, eventually, better give results in the research for finding the cure for diseases
like cancer. A developed India would be powered by economic superiority driven by strong foundations in information technology, biotechnology and space technology, he said. |
