Vidhan Sabha team visits HAU
Our Correspondent

Hisar, February 5
Members of the Public Accounts Committee of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha today visited Haryana Agricultural University and took stock of its on-going research and extension activities. The committee led by Mr Nafe Singh Rathi went around the varsity farm, buffalo research centre, sheep breeding unit, veterinary clinics and Ram Dhan Singh Seed Farm and reviewed the progress achieved in field of agriculture and animal husbandry. The other members of committee included Mrs Veena Chhibbar, Mr Dharam Vir, Prof Ram Bhagat Sharma and Mr Nishan Singh.

At a meeting chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Mr Vinay Kumar, the committee members stressed the need of strong coordination among HAU, the State Agriculture Department and the other state agencies woring for agriculture and rural development in the state. They said that the need of the hour was that the farmers should be made aware about saving natural resources, diversifying agriculture practices and producing pesticide-residue-free fruits, vegetables and other farm products.

The committee members pointed out that taking into account the concern of the Haryana Government about the progress of the farmers, the farm scientists and State Agriculture Department functionaries should work in tandem and take all new innovations to the doorstep of the farmers. They, however, took note of the slackness on the part of agriculture officers and extension specialists in the discharge of their duties.

Further, the committee members asked the varsity scientists to provide quality farm inputs, including seed, fertilisers and pesticides to the farmers and inform them of their rights. The chairman of the committee assured the university authorities that the committee would ask the state government to give more funds to the university and lift ban on recruitments.

Villagers rebuild ninth century Shiva temple
Ruchika M. Khanna
Tribune News Service

Rampur Jangi (Pinjore), February 5
Inhabitants of this village, 10 km from Pinjore, are constructing a Panchayatan-style temple over the ruins of a ninth century Shiva temple discovered last August.

Swayed by their faith that rebuilding the temple would bring prosperity and better crop, villagers of Rampur Jangi, Nanakpur, Baguwala and Kambawal have joined hands to build the temple by pooling their meagre resources. For everything that goes into building the temple — building material, architectural advice, labour or meals for the labourers — no outside help is being taken.

Though the basic structure of this temple is now ready, the villagers say that the temple would be recreated as it stood here more than 1,000 years ago. “The main temple would be dedicated to Lord Shiva and the other four temples, in four corners of it, will be dedicated to Mother Goddess (in her manifestation of Shakti), Lord Ganesha, Lord Rama and Lord Mahavira,” said Ms Rashpal Mehta, Sarpanch of the village.

Remains of an ancient Panchayatan-style temple, found three feet under, were discovered by the villagers on the outskirts of this village. The excavations found dismantled pieces of what appeared to be the main gate and pillars of the temple, similar to the excavations of the ninth century Bhima Devi temple in Pinjore.

A visit to this village showed that the excavated columns of stones, parts of pillars, stone carvings, statues of apsaras and copper pots had been placed near the construction site. Idols of Lord Shiva have been installed here and villagers assemble here every evening for prayers.

These stones, that most likely formed the outer wall of the temple in the ninth century, have beautiful stone carvings, reminiscent of the Gandharva sculpture.

The architecture is similar to that of Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh and Konark temple in Orissa, bearing carvings of various gods, goddesses and ‘apsaras’. The villagers have decided to create a special room in the temple compound for preserving the excavated carvings.

Stones bearing insignias of trident, conch and ‘aashtham’ were found here, which made the villagers believe that the temple had been dedicated to Lord Shiva. Further excavations may reveal the idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya and Nandi. However, the villagers were unable to carry on with excavations, as the owner of the land did not allow his farmland to be dug up further.
