INLD to decide on relief today Chandigarh, July 6 All party legislators, executive committee members and office-bearers have been asked to attend the meeting. “A proposal will be put up before the meeting for paving the way for awarding compensation to the affected families. In all probability, the proposal will be approved”, a senior INLD leader said. Earlier, a government committee headed by Finance Minister Sampat Singh assured a BKU team that it would urge Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, President of the INLD, to give Rs 5 lakh each to families of slain agitators on behalf of the party. Questions have been raised as to why the money is being given by the party and not the government. While ruling party functionaries have not cleared the issue, it is believed that by involving the party in giving the money, Mr Chautala wants to send across the message that the step taken by his government to drive away the agitators was correct. The other theory doing the rounds in this regard is that since the Congress has decided to give compensation to the families of the slain agitators, the INLD must follow suit. Significantly, the Congress, which earlier gave Rs 1 lakh each to the families of five BKU supporters who died at Gulkani, today announced that it would give Rs 1 lakh each to the families of three more agitators on Monday. Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, HPCC chief and other party leaders would give the money to the families of Rajesh, Ram Swaroop and Ramdiya on that day in their respective villages, a Congress leader told the TNS. While the Congress is giving compensation to families of eight farmers, claimed to have been killed in the police action by the BKU, the number of families who will be benefited by the compensation to be given by the INLD will be less. “Family members of those who have been certified by the medical authorities to have died due to bullet injuries will be given compensation”, a senior INLD leader said. He said the BKU was yet to submit a list regarding the number of persons killed. While it has been certified medically that five persons who died in Gulkani were hit by bullets, there is a controversy over the deaths of Rajesh, Ram Swaroop and Ramdiya. Ram Swaroop died in a clash with the police in Nagura village on May 19. The administration has denied that he died in the police firing. It is, however, believed that the post-mortem report of Ram Swaroop was tampered with. Ramdiya and Rajesh, according to the state government, due to natural causes. This claim of the government is supported by independent observers. |
Cong high command rejects Hooda’s reply New Delhi, July 6 Taking a serious note of the slogan-shouting at the May-23 rally, the high command had asked Mr Hooda to identify and punish the troublemakers so that such incidents were not repeated. Sources said in his reply to the high command’s letter, Mr Hooda had explained that it was an impromptu reaction by the crowd and it was difficult to identify persons who had protested in the big crowd as almost all of those present had raised their hands when Mr Bhajan Lal began to speak. He pointed out that the rally lasted for over five hours in the presence of senior leaders and hands were raised only when Mr Bhajan Lal spoke. Apparently dissatisfied with Mr Hooda’s reply, the high command has asked him to punish those who had caused indiscipline in the rally. Feeling the need of strong action to check indiscipline in its Haryana unit, the high command wants that proper message be sent to those encouraging factionalism. The sources said that the top-level changes in the Haryana Congress had been finalised and might be announced next week after final decision was taken by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. While Mr Birender Singh was likely to be made the PCC chief, Mr Bhajan Lal might continue as the CLP leader. Mr Hooda might be given an assignment at the
