Lobbying
on for HPCC chief’s post New Delhi, July 3 Sources said eight Congress MLAs met Ms Mohsina Kidwai, who is general secretary in charge of Haryana, today to support the candidature of Mr O.P. Jindal, MLA, for the post. Some of those who met Ms Kidwai today include supporters of PCC chief Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The sources said the MLAs impressed upon Ms Kidwai to appoint a non-Jat to the post of PCC chief in case Mr Hooda is removed from the post. Mr Jindal was also among the MLAs who met Ms Kidwai. The meeting of the MLAs is being seen as a move by supporters of Mr Hooda to revive the original plan of the Congress high command as part of which Mr Hooda and former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal would have swapped places, with Mr Bhajan Lal becoming the PCC chief and Mr Hooda becoming the CLP leader. The posts of PCC chief and CLP leader are normally divided among the Jat and non-Jat leaders of the Haryana Congress. With Mr Birender Singh, a Jat, emerging as a front runner among the aspirants to the post of PCC chief, there is worry among the supporters of Mr Hooda that their leader may be left high and dry in changes effected by the high command. While Mr Jindal would be the first choice of the Hooda supporters for PCC chief, they may not be averse to Mr Bhajan Lal becoming PCC chief in case Mr Hooda becomes the CLP leader. The sources said the MLAs who met Ms Kidwai included Mr Shadi Lal Batra, Mr Raghubir Kadian, Mr Jitender Malik, Mr I.G. Sher Singh, Mr J.P. Barwala, Mr Dharam Vir, Rao Dharam Pal, Mr Zakir Hussain, besides Mr Jindal. |
Farmers
threaten to block highway Kaithal, July 3 The farmers pointed out that officials of the Canal Department had not properly maintained and cleared the canal minors and sub-minors and due to growth of wild grass and jala the channels remained choked at a number of places as a result of which the water did not reach at tail ends. The farmers at tail ends of Kaithal sub-minor, Kailram minor, Bhanpura minor, Shergarh minor, Guhna sub-minor, Chandana sub-minor, Batta sub-minor, Munnerheri minor, Kicchana minor, Songri minor and at other places were not getting canal water supply causing loss to their standing paddy crops. the situation had aggravated due to absence of rain and decreasing water table at number of places. When contacted the Superintendent Engineer, Mr P.C. Nasa, said according to latest instructions from the Engineer-in-Chief, clearing area of canal had been increased from 1125 feet to 2700 feet by each individual labourer. No contractor or labourer was ready to work according to the new instructions and hence the minors which used to be cleared by the daily wagers could not be cleared this year and it had affected the supply of water at tail ends. However, the matter had been taken up with the high officials at Chandigarh. |
Novel move
to collect house tax dues Ambala, July 3 In a novel attempt, the Municipal Council, Ambala Sadar authorities, have prepared boards on which the names of the house tax defaulters have been written. These boards are soon going to be prominently displayed on the major crossings. The boards will contain names and addresses of those persons whose house tax outstanding dues are more than Rs 5000. There are around 300 such persons in Municipal Council, Ambala Sadar, alone. The outstanding amount due from big as well as small house tax defaulters is around Rs 60 lakh, which is a substantial amount. The amount is Rs 81,000 in one instance. The Executive Officer, Municipal Council, Ambala Sadar, Mr K.K. Jain, said that six boards containing lists of house tax defaulters had already been prepared. “These boards have been put up within the Municipal Council limits. After a week, we plan to set up these boards at the major crossings,” he said. “Subsequently, more such boards are going to be prepared,” he added. Mr Jain said that the boards contained names of all those persons who owed more than Rs 5000 as house tax payment. The boards had been prepared circle-wise and they would be put up at the major crossings of the circle concerned. “We are hopeful that the defaulters will pay up the outstanding dues. Once a defaulter pays up the house tax amount, the name will be removed from the board while the other names will remain. The defaulter will have to submit the money with interest,” he said. Mr Jain stressed that the house tax defaulters would not be granted no objection certificate (NOC) for any work. He said that the effort should bear result since there had been encouraging response to similar effort in some other districts in the state. However, the Citizens Council chairman, Dr N.C. Jain, said the putting up names of house tax defaulters on board was a wrong move. “It is principally wrong. One cannot defame a person by putting names and house number on a board which is going to be publicly displayed,” he said. Dr Jain said that a person may not have been able to pay up the dues due to certain reasons and it would unnecessarily embarrass them. “Instead of taking this step, the municipal council officials should adopt legal means to get the house tax dues,” he said. |

retrenchment Panchkula, July 3 The dharna was led by Mr Surendra Pal Gupta. About 100 employees owing allegience to the sangh today staged dharna and raised slogans against the government. The arrival of the Financial Commissioner, Mr A.N. Mathur, who had come here to inaugurate the Passport Application Collection Centre, provoked them to raise more slogans. They said that on the one hand, the government claimed to provide employment to one lakh persons, on the other, the retrenchment drive was affecting a large number of people. AMBALA: Members of the Haryana Karamchari Mahasangh today held a demonstration in Ambala city to protest against the closure of the HSMITC. The activists of the mahasangh demanded that the corporation should again be opened. “It is an incorrect decision to close the HSMITC which had several projects in hand. The government must not take an anti-employee stand,” they said. Among others, Mr H.S. Takkar, Mr D.P. Bhat, Mr Shamsher Singh and Mr I.K. Sharma were present. The speakers who addressed the demonstrators said that they would continue the demonstrations till such time the government did not take back its decision to close the HSMITC. They said that other organisations had also extended support to the demonstration. The demonstrators raised slogans against the government and stated that the government must not take a decision which would affect a large number of families. |
