CM to meet BKU leaders on July 5
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 1
The much-awaited meeting between the BKU and Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala will take place here on July 5, according to informed sources.

It may be recalled that the BKU and the Chautala government had come into confrontation in the recent months when the BKU activists led by their president Ghasi Ram Nain had blocked several roads in Jind district. The use of force by the government to clear the roads resulted in the death of at least five farmers.

The confrontation with the BKU had led to the postponement of Mr Chautala’s foreign visit by a few days. The stalemate was broken only after the government withdrew cases against several BKU leaders and released them from jails unconditionally.

The BKU leadership, which had refused to talk to Mr Chautala or his MP son, Mr Ajay Singh, later agreed to talk to a committee led by Finance Minister Sampat Singh in the third week of last month. After the talks with the committee, the BKU lifted the road blockade. However, the issue of waiving of electricity dues had remained unresolved. Mr Nain had, however, agreed to discuss the issue with Mr Chautala after his return from abroad.

Haryana shuts down HSIEC
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 1
About 285 employees of the Haryana Small Industries and Export Corporation (HSIEC) were shown the door today when the government closed down the corporation.

They raised slogans against the Chautala government outside the 30-Bay building here when the management failed to give them cheques in lieu of notice period and retrenchment compensation.

Several employees alleged that to save certain IAS officers involved in a scam uncovered by the Vigilance Bureau, the bureaucrats had “conspired” to close down the corporation. They also alleged that certain persons, who were issued dismissal notice for committing fraud, had been retained as members of a core group which would oversee the closure of the corporation.

They said the corporation could have been run profitably if the government had accepted the suggestions and proposals submitted by the employees.
